Chapter Six

I never figured that birds could give the puppy eyes, let alone animals. Then again, he was no ordinary animal. Birds cannot understand you or write words. Nope. He was not a parrot. I was intrigued by him. I wanted him to stay at least for tonight. Maybe he could be my pet. I would share him with my sisters.

Instead of explaining on a paper, this bird gave me the puppy eyes. I could not look away. I could not deny his request. His puppy eyes were better than my sisters'. I rubbed my hands together and grabbed said window. I lifted it and hugged myself. It was chilly outside. I said that I had to shut the window because I was freezing. I was covered in goosebumps. He nodded and flew out. I gasped and stuck a hand out the window.

"Come back!" I never realized how loud I was. "Please! I do not want you to go yet! Come back!"

You will never guess what happened next. I still cannot believe it. Take a wild guess.

I sighed and was about to close the window. I suddenly felt a breeze - and noticed glitter. Yes. Glitter. A gust of blue glitter flew in through my window. I was stunned. I assumed that somebody lost their glitter. Wrong. The glitter flew around me. I tried to catch them. No use. It was as if they had a mind of their own. And they did.

I grabbed my wheelchair's wheels as said glitter moved faster. I could see nothing but a blue blur. I was afraid. I wanted to scream to my parents. To yell for help. But I could not find my voice. I did not know what to make of this glitter. I shut my eyes and prayed for it to leave.

I am unsure how long my eyes were closed. Felt like an eternity. I slowly opened my eyes - and my bottom jaw dropped. Said glitter was gone...but I was not at home. Not in my bedroom or even the backyard. I took in my surroundings. Despite that it was dark, I could see that I was in the woods. Alone in the middle of the woods. I tried to not panic. My heart beat fast.

Did the glitter send me here? If so, why?

"Maybe I am dreaming," I said. "Yes. I am in a dream." I pinched my arm. "No. No, I am not."

I clasped my hands in my lap and looked up at Forlot's dark blue skies. No stars in sight. Just the white moon. It resembled the moon. If I was not in my wheelchair, I would have found my way home. My wheels get caught in the grass. A pain. I can only hope that my family - or the police - finds me - before it is too late. I would have called my parents if my phone were on me. But there is probably no signal in these woods. I hoped to be found safe and sound. And added to not freeze to death.

My eyes widened when I heard a voice. My heart sank. Make no mistake. It was a girl's voice.

"We will make sure that you never freeze to death."

I scanned the tree lines. Never will I forget what I saw. I could not believe it. Was I hallucinating? I rubbed my eyes and looked at the being again. I was definitely not hallucinating.

Flying in front of me was this fairy. A female fairy. Like the ones in fairytales.

I could not take my eyes off her. "Goodness." I covered my mouth. "Are...are you the one who spoke?"

Her wings were flapping in the breeze. She was smiling with her white teeth showing. "You betcha. Hope that I did not scare you."

I uncovered my mouth. "I...I do not know what to say."

Her smile vanished. "You do not like me?"

"I-I do like you. I am just shocked. I never thought that fairies were real."

The smile reappeared. She giggled and poked my nose. "As real as you and your family."

I smiled back. "I...I always wished for fairies to be real. I wanted to meet a fairy. Lots of them. I love you guys."

The fairy flew to the back of my wheelchair. "I see. You have a couple of fairy cutouts on the handles. Cute."

"Thanks. May as well decorate a wheelchair if you need one."

She flew back around. "Why are you in a wheelchair?"

I ran a hand through my hair. I was glad that I was not alone. "I am paralyzed from the waist down. I have not walked since that I was born."

Her smile disappeared once more. "I am so sorry. Sure wish that I could help."

"You already are."

She blinked twice. "I am?"

"You being here and talking to me is comforting. I hate being alone, especially in a place where folks disappear - and never return."

"I assure ya...what is your name?"

"Theresa."

"Theresa. I love that name! As I was saying, I assure ya that you will not go missing. My friends and I will keep you safe."

"'Friends'? There are more of you?"

She nodded. "And unicorns and mermaids and more! I have a boyfriend who is a lawn gnome. He and his pals enjoy messing with you humans. But I will be sure that they do not scare you or your family - for now."

I clapped. "I wanna see the unicorns!"

The fairy sat on my shoulder. "I would show them...but it is time for you to return home."

My smile turned upside down. "But it is still nighttime. I need to see the unicorns now."

She patted my cheek. "You will meet them and the rest of my friends tomorrow night. I promise, Theresa."

"Why can I not meet them now?"

"They have to prepare for the meeting. We chose you. I brought you here."
