Chapter Fifteen
A shiver shot down my spine as Carlos, Marisa, and I froze. I could feel the fear rising inside me. I wanted to say something to the person. I wanted to make up some excuse, but I could not even move my mouth. I had never been caught doing this before. I had never been caught breaking into a house.
"I should have never agreed with Marisa to steal the glasses," I said to myself. "I should have never gone through with this ridiculous plan. And I will now be paying for it. Carlos and Marisa and I are going to be in big trouble."
To our surprise, none of us were in trouble. Want to know why? The person who caught us in the act was not a grownup. It was a kid. A kid who was the same age as us. And it was none other than Dot.
When I realized that it was my friend Dot, I uttered a sigh and relaxed my body. It was not until that point that I was completely drenched in sweat. I wiped my hands on my clothes to dry them. I absolutely hate to sweat, but I would rather do that than ride a haunted train.
"Dot," I said her name, finally finding my voice. "The heck are you doing here?"
"Mike? Carlos?" she said. "I did not even realize that it was you two. I thought that you were some robbers who were robbing this mansion."
"We are not robbers," Carlos stated to Dot. "But you are right about one thing. We are robbing the place."
"Carlos!" I yelled. "You were not supposed to tell her that!"
Dot squinted at the three of us and stroked her chin. "So you all are robbing the mansion, huh?"
I chuckled nervously. "C-Carlos was just teasing with you, Dot. You know how much he likes to play funny pranks on you."
"I do not play any pranks, Mike."
Dot placed her hands on her waist. "So you dressing like robbers and breaking into somebody's home is a prank?"
"This prank is popular by most boys," I lied. "You are a girl, so you would never understand."
"If your prank - if you want to call it that - is popular by most of the boys..." She pointed at Marisa. "...then why is she part of it?"
"I was the one who thought of the idea," Marisa said. "And for the record, we are not stealing anything but important glasses."
"'Glasses'? What important glasses?"
Marisa tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear. "If I told you what the glasses do, you and Carlos would think that I am crazy."
"I do not think that you are crazy," Carlos said.
"Thank you, Carlos. It is good to know that there are people in Forlot who believe in Fright Train."
Dot pulled something out of the pocket of her pants. It was her phone.
I swallowed hard. "Dot..." My voice trailed off.
"You guys leave me no other choice," Dot said as she raised the phone to her ear.
"Are you seriously calling the police?" Marisa asked, leaning forward and glaring at her. "You cannot call the police on us."
"What? I am not calling the police."
Marisa hesitated. "...you are not?"
"Nope. I am calling my parents to let them know that I will be home a little later."
"Where are you going?" I asked her, my eyes darting from side to side.
"I was not going anywhere but home, but now that I see that you three are breaking into Jackie's home...I want to be a part of it."
I raised an eyebrow. "You want to break in with us?"
"Heck, yes!"
I was not expecting that.
