Chapter Twelve

"Ooh. A graveyard," Dejah spoke.

"Yeah. And what a large one at that. Yay..." I said, my words trembling.

I was not exaggerating about how huge the creepy graveyard was. Long in both length and width. The largest graveyard that I have ever seen was at least five acres, and the smallest one that I have witnessed was two acres.

This graveyard...it was more than ten acres!

"It is enormous because it is the only graveyard in Forlot," Dejah explained as if she were reading my thoughts. "It is estimated to take eleven acres of space."

"It looks old," I pointed out.

A couple of the tombstones that were closest to us had dark stains and cobwebs on them, and the grass that belonged to the graveyard was an ugly green. I kept myself from gagging. The place was gross.

And disturbing. Like it was haunted.

Dejah's parents got out of their car, and Dejah grabbed a book from the car and shut the car door. She faced her mom and dad and pointed at the graveyard.

"Mom? Dad? May Eleanor and I visit the cemetery and explore for a bit?"

I was hoping that her parents would deny her request and order me and her to never go near it.

But no.

"Sure," her mom replied. "Your father and I will go in our new house and take a look around."

"Go ahead," her dad agreed. "I will inform your father, Eleanor, that you are hanging out here, and we will call you girls when we decide to unpack."

"Alright." She turned back to me and squealed. "I have never been in a cemetery before, but I have always wanted to!"

"Why?" I asked. I kept staring at the graveyard.

The awful, horrifying cemetery.

"To see what exactly is in one." She took out a flashlight...that she had on her the whole time. Had it hidden...somewhere. And turned it on. Yellow light appeared from the flashlight on her command and was now shining on some of the tombstones.

I tilted my head up to the sky. It was purple. Parts of it were light, and others were dark. But all were purple or a shade of it.

That was weird. Why was the sky not blue like it should be? Why purple? Was it nighttime? Did Forlot have a different time zone? But...I saw no moon. Or even a sun!

Because of the purple sky, the town and everything in it were lost in darkness. But thanks to some street lamps that were showing off their lights, I did not have trouble seeing.

"Come on," Dejah whispered to me. She was already taking her sweet time making her way through the graveyard.

The only reason that I tagged along was because I did not want her to be all by herself in a creepy cemetery that was giving me goosebumps.

Huh. Goosebumps. That sounds familiar. Like a book series that my writer likes to read.

The place gave me a bad vibe. Not just because of the lifeless bodies that were buried underground or the grass and tombstones that were colorless. Something was wrong. Very wrong. I could not put my finger on it.

I finally found the will to move my legs and caught up to my friend. She was holding her book in one hand and holding up her flashlight with the other. The light was shining everything as if it were preparing us for what was yet to come.

"There are only three things in cemeteries," I spoke out loud for her to hear. "Grass. Either alive or dead. Old tombstones. And yes, dead bodies."

"I know all of that. I did my research," Dejah explained to me. "It is just..." She stopped in her tracks and spun around. She showed me the book.

The cover was purple with a big heart in the middle that was colored in red. There was no title anywhere. Not even on the spine of the book.

"...this is a legend book that my parents bought for me last month. I have been reading it ever since. It talks about the true stories and legends of Forlot. Vampires. Werewolves. Even ghosts."

A chill shot down my spine when she said the word 'ghosts.' I do not know why. I knew that ghosts did not exist.

She opened the book and flipped through the pages. "Remember that story that I read to you about Jennifer Cross and Chad Pals?"

"Yes. Why?"

"You know that they are dead. I know that they are dead. But what we did not know was where their bodies were buried...until now."

My eyes widened. "You cannot mean..."

"They were buried here. In this graveyard. Who knows? We may be standing on their graves right now."

I shuddered. "Gosh, no."

I wanted to run. Run away from this place and never look back. Return to my dad and be safe in his arms. However, I did not desire to leave Dejah, so I stayed. She would be disappointed in me.

But...she was creeping me out. Was she only doing that to scare me?

"Legend says that the ghosts of Jennifer and Chad appear at night and roam around Forlot," Dejah continued. "Jennifer is looking for another girl to take her place, and Chad is looking for his next girlfriend. His bride."

I rubbed the back of my neck. "You do not believe that...do you?"

"I believe anything that was written in this book."

"Oh, boy."

This next part was scary.

I had my phone on me and felt it vibrating. As Dejah was looking at some tombstones, I held up my phone to my face and examined the screen. It was a text message.

"Turn around."

Huh?

I looked in all directions.

And spotted a ghost. Standing behind a tombstone.

"You are going to be my girlfriend," the ghost said. "You will be better than the last. Cutie pie."
