Chapter Thirty-Nine

"Grieving? For me?" Jennifer put on a fake smile. "I am honored." She quickly floated towards her and took her human hands into her ghostly hands. "I am always honored when you grieve for me. I hear you. Even if you are not in the graveyard or near my grave. I hear you."

Layla pulled her hands away from Jennifer's. "You...you are a ghost."

She let out a heavy sigh. "Yes. I am. But there is a very good reason for it."

"Is it because you wanted to die?"

The ghost girl did not reply. She looked at me, and then back at her. I could tell that she was speechless.

"I know," Layla spat. "I overheard what you said. Well...that part and anything else that you said after that." She pushed past her and walked up to me and the other ghosts. "What is all this? A ritual?" She glared at Jennifer. "I hope not because you are a Christian, and Christians do not do...whatever this is!" She pointed at me. "And why is she here?!"

Jennifer slowly strolled up to her and held out her arms and hands. "Calm down, Layla. Just give me the chance to explain."

"Then explain! We are best friends, right? Right?!" She sat on the grass. "I do not have to be home until midnight."

"Layla..." She got on her ghostly knees. "You already know the truth. Chad murdered me, and the reason that I am a ghost is because I cannot go in peace until Chad pays for what he did."

"Liar!" I shouted. "Layla, your best 'friend' is not a friend at all! She is lying to you! She wanted to die!"

"Shut up!" both Jennifer and Layla instructed me.

Layla glanced up and spotted Chad. Of course, she recognized him. "Chad. You murderer!"

He facepalmed and said, "If you do not tell her, I will."

"Stay out of this!" Jennifer snapped at him. "This is between best friends."

"Tell me?" Tears began running down her cheeks. "Tell me what?"

Chad placed a ghostly hand on Layla's shoulder. "It was Jennifer's idea for James to kill her so that she would be with me. It was a team effort. We did it because we are friends."

Jennifer was furious now. "Chad!"

"And she calls us her best friends!" Gloria and Gabby boasted.

"Gloria! Gabby! Please. Shut up!"

Layla sniffed. "Is that true? Is what Chad just said all true?"

Feeling defeated, Jennifer confessed. "Yes. It is true."

Layla breathed heavily, as if she were having trouble breathing. "Why...why?!"

"Bestie..."

"Do not call me your bestie!" She got back on her feet. "I was your friend. For a whole year! Until your death. And every day after that treacherous night, I grieved. Grieved for you every single day. Every moment. To find out that my best friend stabbed me in the back!"

"It is not like that!"

"I was scared of making friends because I was afraid that I might lose them!" She grabbed the ghost's wrist. "You...you ruined my life!"

"I was looking out for Chad!"

"Yeah. And you were not looking out for me. You blasted fool!"

Layla was filled with rage, and I did not blame her. Poor girl.

"I never want to see you or talk with you ever again! You witch!"

After exclaiming that, Layla slapped Jennifer's face and dashed out of the graveyard.

"Wait. Wait!" I called to her. "You need to help me!"

"She will not. But I will."

That voice.

"...Dejah?"
