Chapter Sixteen
My back was up against my closet, and I had my new dress next to me. My dress was on a hanger, and my fingers coiled around the once cold hanger that was now being warmed up by my body temperature.
My hairdresser was across from my closet, and I was examining myself and the dress in the mirror. Me in that red dress.
The dress was elegant. It had short sleeves, and the bottom touched my knees. Dark red with glitter was around the middle. It was the perfect size. Perfect color.
Too perfect.
"I should make sure that I do not wear this dress until next Saturday," I said. "I do not want to get wrinkles or stains in it."
I opened the closet doors that made creaking noises coming from the old hinges and hung up the dress. I decided to leave the doors open for the night because tomorrow was the beginning of a gorgeous weekend, and Dejah had invited me over to her house after breakfast. I would be going through dress after dress in the morning.
I was in my pink nightdress - it is the only nightdress that I own - and climbed into bed. I yawned as I rested my head on my pillow and went to sleep. I was so tired...
Bang! Bang!
"Huh?!" I quickly sat up and placed a hand on my chest. I was breathing heavily, and my stomach heaved up and down. The two bangs scared the crub out of me!
After calming down both me and my body, I replayed the strange sounds in my mind, trying to figure out where they had come from.
My father was fast asleep. So were my sisters. So I was left to suspect one person.
Leonard.
I got out of bed and went up to the wall. I pressed the side of my body against my wall. Leonard's room was right next to mine, so I suspected that the sounds were coming from his phone.
Bang! Bang!
There they were again. But they were not from the other side of the wall. They sounded as if they were coming in the direction of the window.
My window.
I scrambled to the bed. I got on my knees and peered through the window.
You see, my window is above my bed. So anyone who walked up to it would easily see me if I were in the room.
That is, if my bedroom were on the first floor.
Unlike our old house, which only had one floor, our new house had two floors. All of the bedrooms were on the second floor, and my window gave me the "perfect" view of the graveyard that was across the street.
Wonderful.
I squinted and viewed the graveyard first. I had been really worried about what the ghost told me. That there would be a fresh, new grave.
For me.
My teeth chattered without me realizing it, and I prayed that there was no new grave as I scanned the graveyard...
...and was relieved that there was none.
At least...not yet.
Bang! Bang!
I immediately pulled away from the window and almost toppled out of bed if I did not catch my balance. My heart was skipping beats now.
The noises were caused by small rocks being thrown at my window!
I slowly raised my head back to my window...
...and spotted two figures. Standing in front of my house. Standing at least an inch from the front door.
I could see them clearly and realized that they were girls. Two girls that were about my age. They were white with blue outlines. I did not think that they were ghosts and that they were just looking to make trouble. I lifted up my window and poked my head out.
"Hey!" I yelled at them. "That is no way to get any attention! You could have shattered my window! Get off my property! It is the dead of night!"
The girls noticed me and and raised their heads to look at me. They were way creepy. They did not answer back and just...stared. Stared at me as if they were trying to burn my soul.
I sighed and motioned for them to leave. "You had better leave. Or I will call the cops," I warned.
I shut the window and lied back down. I relaxed my body and let it fall asleep...
But the quietness and peacefulness did not last long, for it was interrupted by laughter. Laughter that would come from a group of children.
"You will call the cops?" I heard a female voice say. "How can you when there are no cops in Forlot?"
"Even if you did, what cop would believe you?" I heard another female voice add. "We are ghosts. Ghosts who are here to haunt you."
My first thought was that it was those girls messing with me. But after what happened yesterday...what occurred at that graveyard...I was not sure anymore.
Were there more ghosts? And why haunt me? What did I do?
I was deciding whether to warn the girls again or stay in bed and try to get some sleep when I heard a loud noise.
Crash!
I sat up once again and was breathing hard. My heart was beating so much that I thought that it would leap out of my chest.
It came from downstairs.
Should I investigate? Or should I tell my dad?
I decided to investigate because I figured that nobody could be wandering around in the house. The front door was locked after all.
I quietly tiptoed out of my room and down the stairs.
And saw what had crashed.
I got to the bottom of the stairs and picked up the object. It was a picture of me, my dad, and my siblings. The glass had been smashed.
Then, I heard two voices.
"Chad was never yours. But he loves you. So we will kill you."
