Chapter Seventeen

"Let me get this straight. Two separate voices told you that they needed to kill you?"

"Yes. I am serious. Dead serious."

I was at Dejah's house, and Dejah and I were sitting on the couch and discussing about my claim. We were in her new living room, and her parents were in the kitchen and cooking, trying out new recipes. There was a plate of chocolate chip cookies on the table that was in front of the couch. Her mom and dad baked them just for the two of us.

"That is just plain crazy," Dejah stated as she picked out a cookie and bit into it.

"I could not agree with you more," I responded.

I picked out a cookie also and stared at it, debating whether or not to eat it. Chocolate chip cookies are my favorite, but I did not feel like eating them or anything else at the time. My stomach was still twisted in a knot from the terror last night.

"Do...do you think that I am crazy?" I suggested. "Am I imagining what I see and hear?"

"You are not crazy," Dejah commented. "I am taking your case very seriously. I am not like all those adults and other friends who do not believe the main character. 'Cause I know - you do too, readers - that they only believe them when it is too late."

"In other words...you believe that I saw and heard ghosts."

"I most certainly do."

"B-but...ghosts do not exist."

"Of course not. Not in the real world. However, ghosts live in Forlot." She had her book in her lap and opened it to an information page. "It says here that Forlot is known for having different kinds of monsters. From vampires to ghosts. From werewolves to evil shadows. And each group of monsters has a different name because they were born and only live in Forlot."

"Huh. Why am I not surprised?"

"That is because you actually saw ghosts with your own eyes."

I leaned back and pointed to the big window that was by the couch. "And the fact that the sky is purple."

"The book says that the reason that the sky is purple is supposedly because of air pollution. I read past that part."

"Hmm...that would explain it...I guess..." I noticed a word written in the book that stood out to me. "Nerians?"

"They are also known as Mirror Shadows and evil shadows who kill humans for fun. But they are not that much of a threat as long as you do not own a mirror."

"Um..." I gulped and suddenly felt cold. "...I have a mirror on my hairdresser..."

"Then get a bat or something and break your mirror until it is in pieces."

"Okay...I will put that on my long list 'To Do To Avoid.'"

Low sounds came from the television that Dejah had turned on after she invited me in. The Throne of Gaming and Fun was playing on the screen and is one of the many popular shows that I do not care for.

Dejah was skimming through the information page, when I said, "Do you like this show?"

She looked up from her book and at me. "Not at all. It is one of my least favorite shows. I thought that you might want to watch it."

"Absolutely not. I despise it."

"Thank gosh!" She quickly scooped up the remote and brought up the guide. "What do you want to watch then? Mary Totter?"

"A young girl who finds out that she is a witch? I do not think so!"

"Good. I do not like Mary Totter either." There was nothing on to enjoy, so she shut off the television and set the remote back down on the table. "Did you know that the leaders ban shows that they do not care for?"

"No. They can do that?"

"Apparently. I heard that they are trying to ban the two franchises that we just admitted that we despise."

"I guess that they understand how we feel."

Dejah placed a finger on the page and moved it down. "Aha!"

I nearly jumped off the couch and leaned to the side to see what she had found. "Aha what?"

"Let me read it to you." She cleared her throat and read. "'The ghosts in Forlot are actually called Clistines. Clistines are ghost-like people who have lived in Forlot their entire lives. Clistines are not dead - NOT DEAD! - and very alive. They can either be a boy or girl and are always white with a blue outline.'"

White with a blue outline?

"That is it!" I exclaimed. "Those are what I saw! Three of them. One boy and two girls. Their skins were white and had blue outlines."

"Are you girls okay in there?" Mrs. Danos called from the kitchen.

"We are fine," Dejah called back. "We are just doing...girl stuff." She glared at me. "What did the voices say before you retreated and locked yourself in your room?"

"They said that...Chad is not mine. But he loves me. And that they will kill me."

"And there were two girls standing right outside of your house? Around your age?"

I nodded. "Yes."

"That sounds like the ghosts of Gloria and Gabby Seith."

She rapidly flipped through the pages and soon came to a halt and read.

"'Gloria and Gabby were sisters and in love with Chad Pals. They found out that he was not interested in either of them and focused his attention on Jennifer Cross. The sisters became jealous and decided to buy the most beautiful dress and murder Jennifer. Unfortunately, Chad murdered Jennifer. Now, the girls' ghosts haunt whoever lives in the house with this address: 67655.'"

67655?

That house address was familiar.

I covered my mouth and uttered a low groan.

That was my address. I was living in the house where Jennifer was murdered.
