Chapter Nine
Let us just say that none of us girls got any sleep that night.
We managed to hold in our screams because we did not want to wake up Dad and dashed back to my room. We passed our brother's bedroom, and I was shocked to see Leonard fast asleep.
That made me go into panic mode.
When we were safe in the comfort of my room, I slammed my door behind us and locked it. I backed away from the door, and Elena and Elaine hugged my legs. The piano music was still going.
"This house...i-it is haunted!" Elaine stammered.
"I knew that there was something fishy about this house," Elena added. "And I thought that it was dead fish. But I was right! There is a ghost!"
I placed a finger over my lips, shushing them, and picked each of them up and set them on my bed.
Something was off about the situation. There were no such things as ghosts. The girls were just imagining things.
But...I saw it. The piano keys moving up and down by themselves.
That is when I figured it out. It was no ghost. We have a piano that plays by itself. There is a button on the piano to make it play, so somebody must have had pressed it to scare us out of our skins.
Who did it? Is it not obvious to you?
I got my sisters to relax and explained my theory to them. "It was Leonard," I started. "He did this."
"But Leonard is sleeping," the girls stated in unison. "He could not have done it."
"It is the only logical reason for what you claimed to have seen and what we witnessed in the living room. Remember that our piano has a feature that can let it play music all by itself without help."
"So...he..." Elaine interrupted, hugging her teddy bear to her chest and rocking left and right. She was catching on to what I was suggesting.
"Yep. He purposely pressed that button to scare us. I bet you that he is not even sleeping. He is probably resting in his bed and laughing as he begins to fall asleep."
Elaine stopped rocking. "Well...I guess that would explain it."
"I am not convinced," Elena piped up. By the tone of her voice, I could tell that she was frustrated.
I gently patted her shoulder. "Why are you not convinced that Leonard is behind this?"
"He is not the explanation to what I saw floating out of the closet."
"Leonard was probably hiding in your closet. You know that he would think of doing something like that."
"The boy who was in the closet was white with blue outlines."
"Our brother probably painted himself blue and white."
"And the boy was tall. Taller than me, Elaine, and Leonard." She examined me. "In fact, he was as tall as you, Eleanor."
When she compared the boy's height to mine, I felt my heart drop.
Was it Chad after all? Did he sneak into our house and hide in a closet? Was he pretending to be a ghost to trick my sisters or something?
It was then that the music stopped.
I told them that they could sleep with me tonight. They felt a bit better, for they did not have to be alone, and asked if I told Dad what happened. I did not want to wake up our dad. He would be cranky. So I ordered them to stay in my room with the door locked, and I would explore the house to locate any intruders. My sisters praised me for being brave and waited until I returned.
A few minutes later, I knocked on my door to let the girls know that I was back. I heard a click! sound. It the lock on my door turning.
The door opened, and I stepped in. Elena closed the door and quickly locked it.
Elaine was under the covers, and her head was on my pillow. "Did you find anyone, big sister?"
I shook my head. "I checked everywhere. All the rooms. Even outside. But there were no intruders."
Elena and Elaine believed me and were relieved that there was no one but us and our dad and brother.
Elena and I crawled into bed. The three of us cuddled and tried falling asleep. But we could not.
An hour had passed, and none of us were sleeping peacefully. I guess that we were feeling paranoid and thought that whoever was hiding in the closet was not actually gone.
"I am glad that we are moving far away from this house," Elena whispered to us.
Soon, Elena and Elaine climbed out of bed and strolled to my bedroom door. They unlocked it and opened it wide.
I sat up and squinted into the darkness of my room. "Where are you two heading off to?" I questioned them.
"We are going to finish packing up our toys and other stuff and sleep in the car," Elaine informed me as she and Elena left and ran down the hall to their room.
I became worried. What if that boy was still in our house? Waiting? Waiting to terrify his next victim? Perhaps outside? Near the car?
I got enough courage to jump out of bed and grabbed my backpack that had all of my belongings that I could fit in there. I did not wait to finish packing in the morning like my dad and siblings because I did not want to worry about it.
The only thing that I was concerned about now were my wonderful sisters.
I bolted to the kitchen and snatched the car keys that were by the front door. The girls soon scrambled into
the kitchen and asked me what I was doing there.
"I am coming with you," I said as I opened the front door...
...and we saw a black figure standing on our porch.
