Chapter Three

"Margie...Margie..."

The sky had changed to dark blue, which meant that it was nighttime yet again. All of us were in our bedrooms and sleeping, even Mom and Dad. Mr. Hawk allowed them to share one of the biggest bedrooms.

Everyone who resided in the mansion was sleeping, and I knew because other than the noises of snores, there was silence. And do you know how I knew? 'Cause I was not sleeping!

Yes, that blasted voice was keeping me awake! It was so annoying that I would rather do homework! It was so annoying that it caused me to long for the days of complex math! It was so annoying...

...oh, you get my point.

It stunk. It really did. While my sister and the others were sound asleep, I had to endure the everlasting voice of the male that repeated my name. And trust me. I tried everything to get to sleep!

I was lying in my bed and under the covers. My eyes were red, for I checked them later, and small strands of my hair stuck out from my braids. And because of the stupid voice that just would not shut up, I did not bother changing into one of my nightgowns.

"Margie...Margie..."

"Ugh!" I groaned. I tossed back my covers, got out of bed, and stomped up to my window that was now closed.

How I desired to slug whoever was stalking me right in the jaw. I know that it is cruel, but you would do the same thing, would you not?

I growled and was about to open my window when I stopped myself. I did this for two reasons. One, I had planned on threatening the guy by screaming at him like I did in the afternoon, but I thought better. I did not need an angry mob to come to my room and order me to shut the heck up.

The other reason was because of what I was seeing outside. I pressed my face and hands against the glass.

"What the crub is out there?" I asked myself.

Whatever it was definitely was not a creature. It was moving, however, the only reason behind that was because of the wind.

Like in book one, curiosity got the best of me. I had to discover what was out there and possibly why. I am the Monster Protector after all. It is my civic duty to seek the weirdness.

I threw my bag on that was on top of my dresser and scooped up my flashlight. I switched it on and off. Excellent. The batteries were still good.

My crossbow and arrow were inside my bag, and I tiptoed to my door and opened it. The hinges did creak, but they thankfully were not loud enough. I poked my head through the doorway and glanced down the hallway. My room is the closest to the stairs, so it only made my secret escape easier.

The hall was clear, and I tiptoed down the stairs and to the front door. Remembering what happened last time, I opened the door a crack and scanned the front lawn of the mansion.

It looked clear. No dangerous creatures. No Colnoxes.

And...no Lean.

I held my breath as I opened the door some more and stepped onto the front porch. There was the thing that I saw through my bedroom window. It was fairly small, but still noticeable.

I scanned the area one more time before rushing to it and dropping to my knees. I was intrigued at what I found.

On a small rock that was partly covered in moss were papers, old papers, taped to the rock. The ends of the papers danced in the breeze.

"These papers were not here before," I told myself. "I would have noticed sooner."

I removed the tape and papers from the rock with care, and then removed the tape from the top paper. I headed back inside and sat on the couch in the living room. I switched on the lamp and set my bag on the floor and my flashlight next to me.

"Wow," I said. "This is so cool!"

The documents that I found were not your average documents. These had information about the Monster Protectors.

Yes. Monster Protectors. No spelling mistake here.

I was already aware that there were other Monster Protectors before Mr. Hawk. He told me between books twelve and sixteen. Ever since then, I wondered if the Monster Protectors were like me. Were they not normal? Did they love monsters as much as I do?

Of course. That is why they were selected to be the Monster Protector.

It was not until the final document that I put the pieces together. The title of it was called "Your Call," and it is about a call that the current Monster Protector hears.

Wait...

It goes on to say that the call is a man's voice belonging to the very first Monster Protector, and the voice states the Monster Protector's name over and over. No one else can hear it but the Monster Protector, and it will not leave him or her alone until he or she...

"Oh, no..." I moaned.

The rest of the article was cut off.

The first ever Monster Protector wanted me. But what was I supposed to do?
