Chapter Thirty-Six

There is something that you readers and the Monster Protectors did not know. I had no need to use the restroom and only used it as an excuse for me to be absent. Instead, I quietly stood by the door and put my ear on it. I heard every word so far and was on the verge of tears.

Margaret was right all along. The Monster Protectors were nothing but an evil group that was sabotaging the good name of Monster Protectors everywhere. No. They were ruining my good name. I was nothing like them.

Now that I uncovered their true colors, what did they want? What was their evil plan? And why would they possibly think that my sister's death would bring me close to them? They all were sick in the heads!

I decided that it would be the time to do it. I quietly opened the door a crack and looked in. The mayor's office was not how I left it. Loose papers and papers in folders were scattered all over the floor, and the books on the shelf were jumbled.

Is it just me or were the Monster Protecters desperate to find some clues? I had a hunch that they were searching for something much more valuable.

"Is it really necessary to murder a sweet and innocent girl, Grandpa?" Skylar questioned.

"That is the problem, Skylar," McKinley responded. "The Scarlett girl is too sweet. And for the record, she is not innocent. She will get between us and Margie. Margie Morgan will make a fine addition to the Monster Protectors. If it means that her older sister dies, then so be it."

"Aw. Scarlett could have been a great slave. Then again, you are probably correct. It would be super annoying if she kept convincing Margie to betray us."

"While we are on the subject of killing, can we murder her boyfriend Stanley too?" Enoch encouraged. "He would be as much of an issue as her sister."

The first Monster Protector patted the top of his head. "I was planning on us killing Stanley anyway, Enoch. I was lying to Margie when I was scolding you."

Enoch clapped his hands in excitement. "Finally! Margie will be mine. We will rule Forlot as king and queen."

As if! Dang, I wish that I could say that out loud, but I did not want them to grow suspicious of me. Could you guys imagine if I got caught by them? I certainly do not want to imagine it.

I was not going to go back in the room and confront them until I overheard what their real plan was. You readers are in for an exciting chapter because things just got juicy.

The Monster Protectors were almost done turning the office upside down, when the door opened. Not the door that I was by. I did not accidentally fall forward. I did not mention in the last chapter, but there was another wooden door near the desk. It flew open, and a young person raced into the room.

I almost fell backwards. It was Sarah Oscar! I mean, Sarah O'Connor.

What was she doing at the courthouse early in the morning?

"McKinley McCall," Sarah said.

"Well, well, well. If it is not Dr. O'Connor's granddaughter, Sarah," McKinley commented.

Oh my gosh. They know each other!

"Where is Margie?" Sarah declared. "Did you hurt her? Kill her? Stuff her body away because you all are excellent at doing that."

McKinley drew his sword. "Is that the only thing that you are concerned about?"

"My friends come first, and last time that I checked, Margie is my friend. Now where is she?"

"Do you actually believe that we would cause a Monster Protector harm?" Skylar declared.

"Margie is more of a Monster Protector than you will ever be."

I could not help but smile at that. She may be related to the great Dr. O'Connor, but she is not like him in any way, shape, or form.

"You are such a fool," the first Monster Protector called Sarah. "Margie is growing to be like us second by second. We know all about the huge argument that she had with her sister and parents. Tell us, Sarah, because you have been hanging around the four of them. Margie neither was nor will ever be a part of her family, right?"

Sarah narrowed her eyebrows at him. "Family is family despite being related or not. The Morgan family took me in when my own family, my biological family, cared less about me and my needs. And in case that you did not know, Scarlett and their parents apologized to Margie and promised that they would do their best to understand her."

"Pfft! Margie will be unable to resist being a part of us."

"Her mom and dad and sister may not be Monster Protectors, but they sure have good in them than all of you combined. I guarantee that she will choose them over you."

Sarah was on the spot. If I were still naive, I would have chosen both my family and the Monster Protectors.

It was McKinley's turn to narrow his eyebrows. "Why are you even here? I can murder you right now and make it look like that you took your own life."

"You are the ones who will be dying today." Sarah reached into her pocket and pulled out her weapon. A gun.

"You seriously think that you can kill us with that puny gun of yours?" Enoch said. "There are plenty of us and only one of you. You do not stand a chance."

"One good thing that my grandfather taught me was how to properly shoot."

She was about to pull the trigger, when I burst through the door. Big mistake.

Sarah faced me. "Margie!"

While she was looking away from them, McKinley grabbed a hardcover book from the shelf and hit her head with it. She fell on her stomach and was knocked out.
