Chapter Forty-Five
After hours upon hours, the training finally came to a close. Anti-Margie and I knew that they were ready. So here I was. In my bedroom and looking in my mirror. My hands were pressed against the edge of my dresser. I still could not believe that it had to come to this. Fighting the Monster Protectors was not the issue. I had fought evil forces in the past.
This time was different. I felt that what was about to go down would be more than fighting. It was more of a war. A war to decide who would win the town of Forlot. I knew what would happen if my team and I won, but...what if the Monster Protectors won instead? It was possible. There were a lot more of them, and my team was made up of people who were just getting used to the Monster Protector thing.
A tear rolled down my cheek, and I wiped it off. This mess was my fault. How could I be that naive? This war could have easily been avoided if I ignored the first Monster Protector's voice. It left Margaret alone when she ignored it. My friends and family could be doing whatever they wanted right now if not for me. Forlot would not have been in danger if not for me.
So...why was anyone not disappointed or even angry at me?
There was a couple knocks on my bedroom door, and the person announced herself.
"Margie? It is me. Scarlett. The others and I are waiting for you." She swung open the door. "Sis?"
I blew away a strand of my hair from my face and shifted my head towards her. I wanted to smile in order to give my older sister reassurance, but I had too much on my mind.
Scarlett walked up to me. "Let me guess, sis. You do not want to go through with this because you are afraid that we will lose Forlot."
I was a little surprised. "How did you know?"
She playfully jabbed me in the elbow. "Duh. I am your big and wise sister. It is my job to know more about you than yourself and to worry about your safety and protect you. Even though that you are the Monster Protector, the title does not change the fact that you are still my baby sister."
I let out a whoosh of air from my mouth and rolled my eyes. "How many times do we have to go through this? I am thirteen years old. A teen."
"Says the girl who lied to me and trusted an evil scientist and might doom Forlot today."
I frowned at her. "Real mature, Scarlett. Real mature. We should list out your mistakes."
"I was only trying to lighten the mood."
"Well then, your definition and my definition of funny are two totally different definitions."
She grabbed me. "Come here!" She pulled me into a hug, and I hugged her back.
I smiled a little. "How did I end up with a lucky sister like you?"
"How did I end up with the best sister and best Monster Protector in the world?"
A few minutes later, Scarlett and I had joined the rest of the team. Most of them were ready to battle, and a few were worried and scared how everything would turn out, however, I reassured each and every one of them that we would fight until our last breath. I stood on a hill that was not high and looked down at the new Monster Protectors.
"Congratulations!" I proclaimed as loud as I could. "You are now certified Monster Protectors like me and Anti-Margie."
My family and friends either jumped up and down or cheered.
I motioned for them to settle down. "I will be honest with you all. This battle - er, this war - will not be easy. It will take neither five nor ten minutes. It will take as long as it takes and as long as we are kicking. 'Cause we are fighting not only for ourselves, but for Forlot and our loved ones who live here. We will not, I repeat, we will not allow some false Monster Protectors transform Forlot into their evil kingdom. Forlot is built on God and faith, not—"
A loud cry escaped from deep in my throat as I dodged out of the way. An arrow was flying right at me and hit the trunk of a tree instead. I slowly inched my way to the tree and took a good look at the arrow. This arrow did not belong to me or Margaret.
"Margie! Behind you!" Margaret warned.
I spun around - and spotted Skylar standing an inch away from a cliff and aiming her bow and arrow at me. She shot another arrow at me, and I dropped onto my stomach. Her arrow missed me and flew across the hill. I wiped sweat off my forehead.
That airhead!
I wasted no time for my counterattack. I leaped to my feet, drew my crossbow and arrow from my bag, set my arrow on my crossbow, and shot at her. Of course, Skylar moved out of the way before the arrow even reached the cliff, however, that was my warning shot.
"Where are your grandfather and your psycho son and the other so-called 'Monster Protectors'?"
"I am right here," I heard the first Monster Protector's voice. It was right behind me.
I slowly lifted my head and spotted McKinley looming over me. He gripped my shoulder and threw me off the hill. I screamed and braced myself for impact. Luckily, Stanley caught me.
"You okay, Margie?"
"Yes, Stanley. Thank you."
I kissed his cheek, and he set me down. I looked up at McKinley.
"What is all this?" McKinley asked.
"We are the new Monster Protectors," Nigel said. "Margie and her anti trained us."
McKinley chuckled. "We will see about that once you all are nothing but dead bodies."
