Chapter Ten
I eyed Margie's notepad and pen and snatched them from her. I take back what I said about our writer.
"Hey! Jorgie!" Margie exclaimed. "That was not polite. You should have asked."
I shook my head and scribbled a message on the pad.
"What? Why not, Jorgie? And what are you writing?" I showed her, and she squinted. "'I cannot talk'? Of course, I am talking. I know that you cannot hear right now, but you can clearly see that my lips are moving."
I motioned to my throat and jotted down another message.
"'Thanks to my Tenomeya, I have lost my voice'? No, I...wait a second. Are you trying to tell me that your Tenomeya shut off your voice box or something like that?"
I nodded.
"Oh, no. I am deeply sorry, Jorgie. What are we going to do now?"
I quickly wrote on the notepad and held it up to her. The Monster Protector could not believe what I had just said. Er, wrote.
"'I cannot do anything. Even if I could hear and speak, I would not be able to help your sister.' But you are the only one who defeated your fears. You have to do something."
I flipped to a clean page and scribbled. Margie got closer to me and read as I was writing.
"'Only you can, Margie. Only you can rescue Scarlett.' How? What do I do?"
I wrote more.
"'Your sister's biggest fear is that she will lose you and that it will be her fault. You need to show yourself to her. Let her know that you are okay and convince her to not feel guilty.' And just how am I supposed to do that?"
I wrote three more sentences.
"'You are her only sister. Only you know her better. And do not forget that you fought your biggest fear.'" It was then that Margie knew what had to be done. "Say, I did win against my fear. I completely forgot."
I smiled and gave her a gentle push. The Monster Protector took off her bag and unzipped it. She pulled out her crossbow and arrow.
"Wish me luck, Jorgie."
I watched as Margie went up to Scarlett and the Margie clones that surrounded her and tapped one of the clone's shoulders. The clone spun around and frowned.
"Hello. I am you. Well, I am not you because I am the real Margie."
The clone clenched her hands into fists and hissed.
"Great, great. Glad that we agree. So if you will excuse me..." She attempted to squeeze between her and another clone, but the clone grabbed her wrist. "Hey! Let go!"
The other clone turned her head and barked at Margie. Then she placed a hand on Margie's chest and shoved her with all her might.
"Woah!" Margie stumbled back, but managed to remain standing. She growled and rolled up her sleeves. "This means war."
She aimed her crossbow at the clone who had shoved her and fired her arrow. The sharp end of the arrow pierced the clone's back, and she shrieked and crumbled to dust.
"Talk about being made from dust," Margie remarked.
The rest of the Margie clones glanced down at the pile of dust that was once one of them and hissed. They looked at the real Margie and attacked her.
"You want some more? Here!"
Margie dodged them, scooped up her arrow, locked it in, and fired again. Her arrow hit a clone in the chest, and the clone cried and became nothing but dust.
I pumped my fists in the air. She was doing fantastic!
Margie was so busy on the clones that she did not realize that she was standing next to her own sister! But Scarlett did. She must have overheard her sister because she raised her head and asked for her.
"Margie? Margie!"
Scarlett scrambled to her feet and hugged her. Margie was surprised at the hug that came out of nowhere at first, but when she realized it was her older sister, she dropped her crossbow and hugged her back.
"I am overjoyed to see you, Scarlett."
"As am I, sis." She slowly pulled away. "Why are you even here? I thought that you...died."
"Now why would you think that?"
"I...I imagine so many ways that you can die. Like falling off a cliff."
"Why would you be worried about something that is out of your control?"
"I am your older sister! It is my job to worry about you!"
A Margie clone grabbed ahold of Scarlett's arm, and Scarlett freaked.
"What the heck?! There are two of you?!" She noticed the other clones. "There are more of you?!"
"Unhand my sister!" Margie ordered. She pounced on the clone.
"Why are there copies of you?!"
"You are the reason why!"
"What?"
The Monster Protector struggled with all of the clones. "These clones are here because of your fear!"
"My fear?"
"Yes! You are afraid of losing me!"
"So?"
"You need to let go of that fear! You should not be worried about losing me! Worrying is a waste! It does not solve anything!"
"So...how do I stop?"
"Release the worry and think about something that makes you happy."
"O...okay."
Scarlett closed her eyes and relaxed her body. She breathed in and out of her nose, and a smile spread across her face. She opened her eyes.
"Did it work, Margie?"
It certainly did because the next thing that the three of us knew, a white flash of light blocked our visions, and we were back in the mansion.
"Yay!" Margie exclaimed happily. "You did it, sis!" She hugged Scarlett and squealed.
Scarlett giggled softly. "You were right, Margie. Not worrying is...so much better." She locked eyes on me. "Jorgie?"
I smiled and waved. "Glad to have you back."
"What are you doing here? You should be at the party! We all should be!"
Not attending my party was the least of our concerns.
