Chapter Eight

"I apologize in advance, Jorgie," the Monster Protector declined. "Your common sense just said that only you can go."

"That is not entirely true," Common Sense admitted. "If a person defeats his or her fear, like you did, Margie, he or she can go in another fear bubble. It would just be safer if Jorgie did it alone since that her fears left her long ago."

"So you are saying that Margie cannot assist me with Scarlett," I said.

Common Sense smirked. "You did not give me a chance to finish. For Scarlett's bubble, it will be safe enough for Margie to be in it because Scarlett's fear is centered around losing her sister."

"If my dear sister sees me, her fear will die quicker," Margie commented.

"That and the fact that we should not waste any time."

"I am in! Anything for my sister."

"We will see you later," I said. "Wish us luck!"

"We will be praying for you," Common Sense responded. "And Jorgie?"

"Yes? What is it?"

"If you suffer from any complications..."

"You mean from Tenomeya?"

He nodded. "If you are unable to complete the mission, you and Margie need to retreat from the bubble as soon as possible."

"What about my sister?" The Monster Protector was filled with worry. "What about Scarlett?"

"You and Jorgie will free Scarlett from her fear when Jorgie is good and ready."

"I can always stay in the bubble with my sister."

"Are you that selfish?" Faith snapped. "What if Jorgie is incapable of getting back? You need to help her!"

"Faith, there is no reason to get mad at Margie," Common Sense scolded her. "She has every right to be concerned about her older sister."

I could tell that Margie felt uneasy because her cheeks changed to bright red. She also looked ashamed.

"Do not mind Faith," I said to her. "The good emotions are just looking out for my well-being. Besides, you should be worried about Scarlett. You need her, and she needs you."

"If anything bad happened to her, I would never forgive myself."

"You hit it right on the nose. That is your sister's fear. She is afraid of losing you."

"But I am not going anywhere. Our writer will not allow it."

"We need to free her...or you two will be separated forever."

We held hands and walked through the bubble. Once again, we were surrounded by darkness. Margie hugged herself.

"Jeez. Why the heck is it cold in here?"

"Maybe because fears are supposed to be cold," I suggested. "I mean, they are wicked."

We surveyed the blackness. No sign of Scarlett.

"She has to be close," I insisted. "You were not far from me when I found you."

The Monster Protector cupped her hands around her mouth and called for her beloved sister. "Scarlett? Scarlett! It is me! Margie! If you can hear me, make some kind of noise!"

We waited for the dead silence to be broken by one or more sounds. But no.

What was that? You think that we heard nothing? Well, you would be mistaken. Both of us heard the same thing. The downside was that it was not Scarlett.

It was Margie!

No. Not Margie. I am getting ahead of myself.

A few seconds in, and we suddenly heard what seemed to be the sounds of footsteps. A pair of footsteps echoing throughout.

I had my guard up, but Margie was convinced that it was Scarlett.

"Sis!" She hurried in the direction of the footsteps. "Jorgie and I are here to free you from captivity!"

A figure appeared from the blackness, and we were stunned by who it was.

"It is...me," Margie said. "But...how can that be? I am right here!"

"It is a part of your sister's fear," I explained. "Remember, Scarlett is scared that you will get severely injured. Or worse. Die."

The Margie clone looked exactly like the original. The only difference was that her - we will refer to the clone as a she - pupils were red.

"Is she a robot?" the Monster Protector questioned.

Right after she said that, the clone walked through her!

"Not a robot! Definitely not a robot!"

I kept my eyes on the clone. "And she is not a ghost. And I am curious as to where she is going."

"Probably to where my sister is. Let us follow her, Jorgie."

The clone was walking extremely slow, taking her sweet - and our valuable - time. Because of this, we had no other choice but to trudge behind her.

Margie did not like it. "Turtles are faster than her!"

Neither did I. "It is the pain in the bottom, but it will hopefully be worth it when we find Scarlett."

Thank the heavens that we did not have to trudge for long because we soon overheard faint sobbing. Margie and I picked up speed, raced past the clones, and to where the sobs were.

Lo and behold. There was Scarlett. Lying on the ground and crying her heart out.

Unfortunately, she was not alone.

There were Margie clones ranging from around fifteen to twenty - circling her. They were chatting away, and it bothered Scarlett.

"Stop it! Stop! Please!" Scarlett begged. "Go! Leave me alone!"

"She is talking with the clones," I muttered to Margie.

"I tried to keep you safe. I really did. I did not mean for you to go off the cliff!"

Margie's face twisted in confusion. "Uh...what?"

"She must be afraid that Margie will either be injured or killed from a cliff," I said to myself.

I listened for more when I realized that something was wrong...with me. Scarlett's mouth was still moving, which meant that she was still talking. And she was not the only person whom I could not hear.

Then it hit me. Like a lightning bolt had struck me.

I pulled Margie aside. "Margie, I am deaf! I cannot hear anything! What are we going to do?"
