Chapter Thirty-One

Hearing the hinges on the door, I was back lying on my own back and lifted my head to get a good view of who had entered. I suspected Dr. O'Fallon or any of the characters whom I named off. But no. It was a character that I had no desire of seeing.

What is that? You readers are sure that it was Ava? While I give you a round of applause for knowing that I am not fond of her, the person was not Ava.

First of all, it was a boy who is a couple of years older than me. Second of all, he was wearing an eyepatch. No, no. He is from Forlot...and related to Ava Campbell.

"You are a problem, Caleb," he said. "But I would not go that far. You are far from a problem child."

I instantly sat up and frowned at him. "Slapi Campbell."

If you do not remember, Slapi is Ava's brother and as evil as she is!

"Something tells me that you are not happy to see me."

I crossed my arms over my chest. "That would be correct. I also am not glad, thrilled, or relieved either!"

"It has been a while since my last entry to this book series, so the writer wrote me in to visit you."

"I wish that she did not. You were better forgotten."

"Now, now. That is not how the Caleb Night acts. He is supposed to have a pure heart. Speaking of heart..." He went up to the heart monitor and rubbed his chin with a finger. "...yours seems to not be working."

I stared at the heart monitor for what felt like an eternity. The lines were not going up and down like normal ones.

They were flat. Flatlines.

"You are dead," Slapi said to me.

"No!" I shrieked at the top of my weak lungs and threw a pillow at him.

He caught the pillow before it could hit him. "Do not be angry with me. It is not my fault that your heart gave out."

"My heart has not given out, you weasel! My..." I placed a hand on my chest, over my heart. "...my heart is beating. It is beating faster than usual now that you are here."

"Hmm..." His eyes followed the two cords from the monitor to me. "...the cords are probably not on correctly. Otherwise, you would be dead." He dropped the pillow to the floor.

"Stop saying that I am dead and I should be dead and I could be dead and I would be dead! I am sick of you and your lies!"

"Is that a hint that you do not want me here?"

"Yes!" I pointed a finger at the door. "Go on! Leave me be!"

"Okay, okay. You win, Caleb. I will go." He began walking to the door, but halted by it and spun his body around. He grinned evilly. "I will tell you what. I promise that you will never have to see or talk with me again in your lifetime...if you tell me who the Lubriem is."

I gripped the hospital blankets, and my eyes bulged. I was sure that I misheard him. I prayed that I did!

"Er, um...what did you say?"

Slapi folded his hands behind his back. "Do not pretend to act stupid. I myself am not stupid and know for a fact that you heard me loud and clear."

"Seriously. I did not hear you," I lied. "It is so hard to concentrate what is around you when you are sick."

"Your so-called 'disease' is not stopping you from sitting up and chatting with me and moving."

"It probably will soon, Slapi. Whatever I have has not progressed..." I gulped. "...yet."

Slapi raced to my bed. "Caleb, I have always been nice towards you. I fed you your favorite foods and never abused you."

"You and Ava treated me like a dog! Actually, I take that back. You two treated me worse than a dog!"

"We only wanted you to never escape."

"Sometimes, you chained me to a wall! You put a heavy chain around my neck, and it left bruises on my poor neck for months!"

"If you did not escape..."

"I did not escape! You and Ava were okay with me going on my first date with Cindy so that you had a reason, regardless whether it was good or not, to chain me and lock me in a cell!"

"Caleb." He grabbed the sides of my face with one hand. "Tell me who the Lubriem is, or you will regret it."

Ava's brother is so evil and terrifying. I wish that I could defend myself, but I am so weak.

Wait...

I had a mix of emotions. Sad. Mad. Shameful. A failure. Anything but joyful, and my powers reflected on those things. I was also aware that if the powers were showing because you were not joyful, they will freeze anyone who touches the black and purple mix.

Seeing that my powers were covering the entire hall really quick, I had no time to warn my sister and girlfriend.

A tear trickled down my soft, warm cheek as I felt Joan's and Cindy's fingers slip from my hands. My powers covered the girls from head to toe, and now the two important girls in my life were statues.

"No..." I whimpered. "...no..." I hid my hands under my armpits. But what good would that do? It would not stop the powers.

I smirked.

"Why are you smirking?" Slapi questioned.

I grasped both of his wrists. "This is what you deserve."

Before I could use my powers on him, the door opened, and Cindy came in.

"Caleb?"

Slapi grunted and jerked away, and my powers shot out from my palms...

...and hit Cindy. She was a purple and black statue once again.

"Ooh!" Slapi said. "A certain somebody cannot control his powers." He laughed. "You are a monster."
