Chapter Seven
We finished eating the frozen meal, and I traded in my fork for a napkin. Ada handed me a napkin, and I wiped off the crumbs. Ada did the same and said, "That is what you take from that?"
"Uh, yeah," I stated. "But I should not be so worried about the idea of me and Ava being brother and sister. I do not remember her ever being a part of my family." I sighed with sadness. "The family who used to love me."
"What about my illness? The fact that I was in love with my brother, Caleb."
"I did not expect you to say that. It is not every day that a Forlot character is in love with one of his or her family members."
Ada forced herself from the chair and strolled to the kitchen counter. She threw the plastic container in the trash and tossed the forks in the sink. She then opened the door to one of the cupboards and pulled out two glasses that I could easily tell were clean and shiny.
"I can be silly at times, Caleb. I did not fetch us drinks before we ate." Ada held one of the empty glasses under the faucet and switched on the faucet. Water shot out and into the glass. "What would you like to drink? I have punch. Different juices, like apple and grape."
"My first choice is water..." I admitted. "...but I do question the condition of your water."
She reversed glasses and filled mine to the brim. "Water is my top pick too. It is delicious and healthy." She turned off the faucet and returned to me and the chairs and set the two glasses on a long and narrow table that was in front of us.
I leaned forward and sniffed the water. I pulled back in order to keep from gagging. I pinched my nose because the water smelled like old gym socks! And that is exactly how I described it to Ada.
"Oh, please, Caleb. I have drank this water plenty of times before and am perfectly healthy. Well...except that my veins can clog at any moment and...and the chances of me experiencing a stroke is high."
"What did you expect from drinking disgusting water, Ada?"
"What? You have never drank sardine water?"
I covered my mouth and felt something creeping up my throat. I was going to puke!
"Why is your face green? Is your face like a mood ring?"
"May...may I use your bathroom?" I choked out as loud as I could.
"Sure. It is to your right. There is a blue door."
I sped off like the speed of light. Ada called after me.
"No, no! Your other right."
Soon, I was on my knees and holding onto the counter with the row of sinks. I thanked the Lord that I was able to make it and rested on the hard floor. The floor was cold against my warm skin, but I did not care. I was just blessed that I was not sick anymore.
Seconds in the bathroom changed to minutes, and those minutes changed to a half an hour. My stomach ached, and I did not want to leave the safety of the bathroom. I was scared that I would puke again.
Slam!
I was startled by the loud noise, and all the hairs on my head and arms stood straight up. Goosebumps covered every inch of my skin, and I prayed that no crazy dummy would show up and pick on me.
Finally finding the courage to, I got up and tiptoed to the bathroom door. I thought that maybe Ada was right on the other side and would give me a panic attack on accident.
"Oh, man," I whispered under my breath. "I wish that I was a sponge who was square. I hate being me."
I got an idea on how to prove my suspicion and knocked a short tune on the door.
Knock! Knock, knock, knock!
I backed away from the door, preparing to hear a different tune on the other side. I waited. And waited. And waited. I waited and waited...
...and no knocks ever came. But I did not come to terms to this until fifteen minutes later!
I am a poor excuse for a hero.
Still cautious, I twisted the knob and opened the door. I poked my head out and looked all around. It was empty, and the two glasses with...sardine water...were not on the table.
Ada was not there. She was gone.
"Ada...left me?" I said. "Without telling me?"
A tear formed, and I spotted the small television that was placed in front of the table and chairs. I sat back in my chair and picked up the remote that had been on the table.
"I pray that Ada is not acting like my mom who abandoned me at that store," I whimpered. "Hope that she comes back for me."
I pressed the power button, and the television came on. I was unsure whether it was a show or movie playing. I just knew that it had to do with a store.
A girl, the owner of the shop, was working behind the desk. She had her computer out and was typing on the keyboard. Probably a quick search.
The front door swung open, and in came was none other than Ada! The crub was she doing there?
Ada walked up to the desk and rang the bell. "Sorry that I have to be here, but I will be quick."
The girl closed her laptop, and I dropped the remote.
"Joan!"
"You again," Anti-Joan said to Ada. "You know, I could turn you in to him."
"You and the others never will. God and good will always triumph over evil."
Anti-Joan growled. "You have a pure soul. I hate pure souls!"
Something was telling me that I had to locate that store. And fast.
