Chapter Sixteen
"Cannot believe that I am in trouble on my first day," I hissed. "I did not do anything wrong. Well, I did throw the pillow at that one girl. But I did not harm her. I did not mean to." I closed my eyes and clenched my fists. I waited for the punishment.
"What are you ladies up to on this gorgeous morning?" the teacher asked. "What are you doing?"
I unclenched my fists and opened my eyes. I could feel my heart slowing down. I tugged on my shirt and faced the teacher. It was not Ms. Undergrove or Ms. Green. I knew it. I did not recognize the voice, so it could not be either of them. It was a different teacher. She had on a dress that was similar to Ms. Undergrove's. Her hands were on her waist with her fingers tapping. I was afraid that she was angry at us. She was frowning after all.
"Ms. Scream," the girl whom I hit said. "Goodness. We were scared that you were Ms. Undergrove or another teacher who does not like us to have fun."
Ms. Scream sighed and put on a small smile. "So...were you girls having another pillow fight in here? Please do not lie to me. I can see feathers and empty pillowcases. I may be young, but I am not dumb like real worlders."
The same girl whose name was Serena gagged. "Do not mention those real worlders, Ms. Scream. They are not worthy of magic. They would never know how to use it if it hit them in the face."
"I am relieved that real worlders do not have magic," I joined in. "They would abuse it and destroy Forlot and the rest of the fictional world."
Ms. Scream looked at me. "I have never seen you." She lowered her arms to her sides. "Now I remember. I had forgotten that we were having a new student. I bet that you are excited to be taught magic and how to live your life to the fullest. No one can live this life without some purpose."
"That is good to hear. It is why I am here. But you and the other teachers can spare the magic. I am not in this for the magic. I only wish to discover my purpose."
The students gasped at what I said. Ms. Scream shook her finger at them and scolded them. She said that not everyone wants magic and added that we are different. We have different wants and needs, and it is nothing to sneeze at.
A girl named Violet snatched a tissue and sneezed in it. She was a few inches shorter than me. "I think that it is too late to not sneeze at it, Ms. Scream."
Ms. Scream giggled and grabbed my shoulder. "Now if you ladies do a thorough job of cleaning up, then I will not tell Ms. Undergrove about your little party."
"Yes, Ms. Scream."
"Margaret and I will return." She pulled me away.
"Where are we going?" I asked her. "Am I in trouble? I am not in trouble, am I? How do you know my name?"
"Magic," she replied. "I have the ability to read minds."
"Oh. So do you know what I am thinking?"
"You are wondering where we store the foods."
"You are good." I patted my stomach. "So is that where we are going? We are grabbing a bite to eat?"
"If you want. I only wanted to pull you aside and speak with you, but we can chat in the cafeteria."
"That would be great, but...what is it that you desire to talk about?"
"What you said to me. How you are uninterested in the wonders of magic."
"Hope that is not a problem."
"No problem at all."
Ms. Scream let go of my shoulder and told me to follow her. I did and had to keep up with her. I thought that I was fast, but she was faster. She sped downstairs like a cheetah. Maybe it was her magic.
"If somebody mentions that word one more time, I will throw up," I said under my breath. "Gag and throw up. I am sure that nobody wants that."
The cafeteria was on the first floor, along with a lounge and sports equipment. When I first came, I did not see the sports equipment or the lounge. That is right. I was knocked out by magic. It is hilarious how the one thing that I loathe is the one that did me in. I shook my head to focus on the task at hand. I do not want to relive the embarrassing moment.
Margie would probably get a kick out of it.
Ms. Scream opened one of the double doors and held it open for me. I thanked her and walked in. So amazing. The cafeteria was amazing. It is nothing to write home about, but it is better than most cafeterias. No one was in there, not even the staff. It was silent - and creepy.
I tugged on my braid. "Uh, where are the workers?"
"You mean the people who tend to the food?"
"Yeah."
She smirked and walked to me. "Who needs workers?" She snapped her fingers. A plate of pancakes appeared in her hand. "I would be more than happy to make you something else if you do not want pancakes."
I eyed the pancakes and licked my lips. "Could you, uh, put in some chocolate chips? I just love chocolate chips in my pancakes."
"Oh my gosh. I love chocolate chip pancakes too!"
"Awesome!"
I think that Ms. Scream is my favorite teacher.
I sat at a table and rubbed my hands together. You just do not realize how much you love food until you are as hungry as a lion. I was so hungry that I probably could have eaten a horse!
"What is that ringing sound?" I asked.
Ms. Scream gasped. "It is him."
