Chapter Fourteen
I could not believe my ears. I was suddenly freezing as if I were in a freezer. Goosebumps were covering every inch of my skin. My heart skipped a beat. I was scared. I did not want to be, but I was. I scrambled off the cold table and got in a fighting stance. I raised my fists and frowned at the teachers.
Did Ms. Green say what I think that she said? Was she and Ms. Undergrove going to toss me in the fire? Were they going to throw me into the fire just because I am a teen? That is not right!
I surveyed this small room for my bags. I wanted to get my bow and arrow so I was able to protect myself. But they were nowhere to be found, so I was on my own. At that moment, I felt stupid. I felt like a complete idiot. I should have seen it coming. They were not my friends. They were my enemies. They had planned to get rid of me. Were they planning to rid the world of teens? Talk about discrimination.
Well, I was not going down without a fight.
"You messed with the wrong teen," I commented. "You will never take me alive or dead. It is because I am way stronger than you, even with your magic."
Both Ms. Undergrove and the young lady did not move a muscle and just stared at me with wide eyes. I let out a gasp when we heard laughing. It was Ms. Green. She had a hand on her stomach and was cackling like some witch. Funny that I compare her to a witch because she seems like one. Plus, she has magic.
"Why are you laughing?" I demanded. "You will tell me - or else."
Her cackles died down. "Or else what?"
"You do not want to know what I plan to do to you."
Ms. Undergrove held out her arms to the sides. "Please stop. That is enough. You know how much I do not like fights, Ms. Green." She lowered her arms and looked at her. "Why did you have to say that?"
"Say what?"
"Why did you tell Margaret that we would throw her in the fire?"
"Oh, come on. I just wanted to have some fun with her. There is no harm in that."
"You can have real fun with her when you are teaching her how to use magic properly."
"Is that a promotion? Or a punishment?"
"You should be excited to teach our newest student."
"Not if she takes my jokes seriously."
I lowered my fists. "Wait. You were just joking?"
"Of course. Cannot believe that you fell for it. We never would toss our students in the fire no matter the age. I assumed that you would get the joke because you are a teenager."
"I could care less whether it is a joke," Ms. Undergrove said. She walked up to me and rubbed my back. "Never joke about killing someone. Margaret just met us. How was she supposed to know that you were teasing?"
Ms. Green shook her cane at her. "You are no fun."
Ms. Undergrove looked down at me. Her eyes softened as she removed her hand from my back. "Margaret, are you okay? I apologize on behalf of Ms. Green. Sorry for scaring you."
"Me? Scared? I was not scared. I am Margaret Morgan. I am never scared."
"You are lying," Ms. Green stated. "Lying through your teeth. You were so scared that you wanted to fight me." She waved her hand, and a green ball of light appeared in her palm. "You would not have a chance against me. 'Cause I have magic, and you do not."
Now she was getting on my nerves. I felt the butterflies in my stomach. I had a feeling that she did not like me. But why? Why would she not like me? What did I ever do to her? So I asked her.
"What have I ever done to you?"
Ms. Green put a hand on her lower back. "Excuse me?"
I spoke louder this time. "What did I do to you? That is what I asked. What have I ever done to you?"
Ms. Undergrove was about to say something, however, Ms. Green beat her to the punchline. "Margaret, is it? I do not understand where this is coming from. Why did you ask me such a question? You have done nothing to me. If you did, I would tell ya."
I tugged on my braid. "It is just that you are being cold towards me. You are giving me the cold shoulder."
For the first time, she flashed me a genuine smile. "Oh, I have not been giving you the cold shoulder. Now this is giving you a cold shoulder." She waved her hand in a circle, and ice appeared on my shoulder.
I gasped and tried getting the ice off. "Witchcraft! This is witchcraft!"
Ms. Undergrove motioned for me to relax. "The ice will not hurt you, Margaret. It is okay. It is not witchcraft."
"Easy for you to say. You have magic."
"Do not be like that, Margaret. The day will come when you least expect it. It will be worth the wait."
"What day?"
The young girl scooted close to me. "She is referring to our graduation. It is around the corner."
"'Graduation'?" I figured that she was a student - and I was correct. "We cannot graduate. I cannot graduate. I just started attending this school. It is my first day."
"I will explain how it works when I show you around. I am Hazel by the way." She winked. "Nice to meet you." She held out her hand. "I hope that we can be friends."
We shook hands. Ms. Undergrove snapped her fingers, and the ice disappeared. I thanked her and gazed back at Hazel.
"I cannot wait for you to meet the other magical girls."
"'Magical girls'?"
