Chapter Four

I have seen this guard roaming the castle, but he and I do not know each other well. We do not even talk with each other, so I was startled when he approached me - and communicated with me.

I am taller than most of the guards. That includes him. I gazed at what he was holding. A pink envelope. I was curious and told the guard to hang on. I had to know. I had to know what was inside. If it was addressed to me anyway.

"You want me to hang on?" Dad asked. "Well, I will for as long as you need me to, but you know that I will not be able to stay on the line forever. You are as busy as I am."

"I was not talking to you, Dad. I was talking to a guard. He wants me for something."

"Then I had better let you go."

"It was wonderful to hear from you, Dad."

"Right back at ya. I love you, honey."

"I love you more." I hung up and put my phone back in my pocket. "So what did you say?"

"I said that you have mail," he answered. "It is just one letter, but it is better than none." He held it up. "This is the mail that we received today. Can you believe it?"

I thanked him and took the pink envelope and read the front. There were my first name and last name and the castle's address. It was in black ink. But what stuck out was where it came from.

I lowered the envelope and asked, "Is this it?"

The guard nodded and put his hands behind him. "Yes. That is it. It was the only mail in the mailbox."

"Oh, wow." My hand holding the envelope was shaking uncontrollably. I tried stopping it, but it was no use.

"Margaret? You alright?"

"Yeah, yeah. I am fine. I am just stunned."

"Why are you stunned?"

"I have never gotten a letter. I have never received mail in all my life." I hugged the envelope and smiled. "I am super excited. I always wanted to receive either a letter or a package to see how it feels."

He put his hands on his waist. "It does not feel good to get a bill or an advertisement."

My smile grew as I ripped open my mail and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

"Whoa, girl. You are not giving that envelope mercy."

I laughed and unfolded the paper. "That is hilarious."

"Why, thank you." He patted my shoulder. "Well, I had better get going. The lovely princesses are not going to protect themselves."

"You got that right."

We waved goodbye, and I watched him stroll down the hall until he vanished in a room. I tucked the envelope under my arm and skimmed the letter. It was certainly for me. My name was at the top, and the letter was also signed from a woman. I knew that it was a she because a "Ms." was in front of the last name.

The more that I read the letter, the more excited that I became. I wanted to tell the princesses about the offer. I desperately wanted to show them the letter.

"'Dear Margaret Morgan,
Congratulations! You have been selected for the trip of a lifetime! I know what you are thinking. No, it is not a scam. I am who I say that I am. Just ask the other girls and boys your age who are selected every year. I picked you for my program because you are exactly what I am looking for. What we are looking for. I have researched you and am impressed by your status. Sad that you are not the Monster Protector anymore because you have a potential. So much potential. If you attend my school, I will show you how you can find purpose in your life.

If you are interested, come to Faton Island. My friends and I will be waiting for you. If not, you can tear up the letter and throw it away. It is your choice.
Sincerely,
Ms. Undergrove.'"

"Now we are talking," I said. "Someone did not give up on me. I have to take this deal. I...I have to fly to Faton Island! But I need to tell the princesses before I depart. Do not want them to think that I am missing."

I walked back to said room and pressed my ear against the door. I rolled my eyes.

"I cannot believe that they are still going at it," I said.

"That concludes this week's meeting," Amanda said.

"Thank gosh. I thought that it would never end."

I grabbed the doorknob and pushed open the door. All the princesses halted what they were doing and looked at me. I could not help but squeal.

"Margaret, you are back," Jorgie said.

"And you just squealed," Amanda added. "How quaint. But if you changed your mind about the meetings, then you are too late because this meeting has wrapped up."

I walked to the princesses. "I am happy - and relieved - that this meeting is over." I waved the paper in the air. "I received a letter in the mail."

"'A letter'?" Jorgie repeated. "That...is wonderful!"

"I know, right? First time that I have gotten mail."

"Who is it from?"

"It is from a teacher. Her name is Ms. Undergrove. She chose me to be in her school because I have potential."

"Awe. What is the school called?"

"It does not say, but it is located on Faton Island."

Amanda's eyes went wide. "Did you say Faton Island?"

"Yep. She wants me to visit Faton Island if I would like to enroll in her school."

"You are not thinking of enrolling in the school."

"Not only did I think about it, but I also accepted. I am traveling to Faton Island!"

Amanda stormed up to me and snatched the letter.

"Hey!"

"You are staying put."
