Chapter Fifteen
How could my roommates be magical? How could they bend magic to their will? I thought that I was told that we would get our magic when we graduated. It is what Ms. Undergrove told me. Did I mishear her? Or did the teacher give me misinformation? Whatever the case is, I am not going to have magic. They can hand me a new bow and arrow. I would love new ones because my old ones were wearing out. They could break any minute.
"Do not fret, my lovely bow and arrow," I whispered. "I will never toss you in the bin. I will never forget you no matter what." I turned my attention back to Hazel. "So Hazel, is it? Do you have magic?"
Hazel was leading me down long and narrow halls and around corners. I was hoping that we would reach said room, but with each door that we passed, I figured that we would never make it. I would be tired before we got there. My legs would give way, and I would fall. Fall on my butt.
Both the walls and the doors were brown. Nothing was really special about them. I cannot say the same for the ceiling and floor. They were beautiful. They might have hypnotized me if I stared at them for too long. It felt as if I were in the Forlot restaurant.
I licked my lips and patted my belly. Gosh. Thinking of the restaurant made my stomach growl. I was starving. I would not think straight if I did not get any food.
"Sounds like that you are hungry," Hazel said.
"How did you know?" I asked. "How did you know that I am hungry?"
"I heard your stomach rumbling. If we do not get foods in that thing, it will explode!"
I could not help but giggle. "Explode with hunger!"
"Exactly."
We turned another corner, and Hazel picked up speed. I wish that she warned me because I had stumbled like a deer and almost met the floor. I had a hunch that she was eager to meet me. Eager for me to meet the others. We reached the end of the hall, and Hazel released me. She clapped and jumped up and down.
"Is this it?" I asked. "Is this the room?"
"Yep! And do not worry about your bags. They already are in here and ready to be unpacked."
I uttered a whoosh of air and scratched the back of my head. "Hope that those girls have not snooped through my belongings. That is an invasion of privacy."
She rested her hands on her hips. "I warned those girls to not touch your stuff, but they do not always listen to me." A warm smile spread across her face. "I will teach them a lesson. I promise you that."
I raised a fist and blew on it. "You do not have to teach them any lessons. 'Cause I will give them one that they will never forget."
She was shocked by what I stated. I think that she was even impressed. She allowed her arms to dangle at her sides and moved her body as if she were moving to the music. If there was music.
"What are you doing, Hazel?"
"I am compromising with my body. I am super excited! So excited that I cannot stay still."
"About what?"
She put a hand on the door. "Why do we not allow our roommates to tell you?" She pushed the door open...
...and I was immediately greeted by a pillow.
Feathers escaped the pillow as it flew and hit my face. I was thankful that the feathers did not go up my nose. I hate when things go up your nose without permission.
I pried the pillow off my face and tossed it in the room. Usually, I would be angry if someone threw something at me, especially if it is food. But I was - and still am - smart enough to know that I was not the target. Then I got an idea. I scooped up the pillow and threw it at one of the girls. She was on a bed with a pillow in her hand. She had no time to react. As soon as the pillow hit her, she fell back like a domino and onto the hard floor.
I could not help but laugh. I hunched over and put my hands on my knees. Tears trickled down my cheeks. It was the funniest thing that I had seen in a long time.
I thought that the girl would be angry at me or sob, but instead, she laughed. Laughed hard. That caused me to laugh even more. She then grabbed the edge of the bed and hoisted herself off the floor. Her laughs died down when she looked at me. I halted as well and gazed back at her. My eyes darted from side to side. I did not have a clue what to say to her.
"You are not one of the teachers," she said. "You are no teacher at all."
Hazel and I stepped into the room. She nudged me and whispered to me to introduce myself.
I waved to the girls. "Hello there. My name is Margaret Morgan. I am new to your school and cannot wait to be part of your cause...whatever cause that is."
The girl still clutching her pillow laid it on her bed and strolled to me and Hazel. She put a finger over her lips and told me to keep this a secret.
I quirked an eyebrow and asked, "What secret?"
"Ms. Undergrove and the other teachers hate when we have pillow fights."
"Why?"
She lowered her finger. "Have you seen the room?"
This room was an absolute mess. Feathers covered the beds and the floor. Pillowcases were scattered.
"We need to clean up before one of the teachers comes in," Hazel said.
Suddenly, we heard a voice. An adult's voice.
Crub.
