Chapter Thirty

Ghost children. I was seeing them with my own eyes. I was seeing the hundreds of ghost kids who died in this very hospital. I wanted to scream for help, but I was too petrified. I was scared that the ghosts would hurt - or even kill - me. So I instead stayed silent and wiped away my tears.

I will not say how many of them there were because I was frankly not in the mood to count all of them, but I can definitely say that there were over a hundred of these children. When I first saw them, I realized that there were so many. Too many in my opinion.

It broke my heart seeing the ghost children. I wanted to lie down on the cold floor and cry. Cry until every feeling and pain exited my body. I no longer wanted to deal with this nightmare. I wanted to give up and move on with my life.

But how could I move on when I would practically be living with my great-grandparents and other ghosts?

A boy who was half my height stepped out and stood on his tiptoes. He sniffed the air and licked his lips.

"I smell...Archer!" the boy declared.

We were in a large room. The ghosts of the sick kids, of course, filled up the majority of it. As soon as the boy announced that he was smelling me, an Archer, he and the rest of the ghost friends began walking in my direction.

I forced myself to finally move, but I lost my balance and found myself back on the flippin' floor. I wanted to get back up and make a break for it, but I was not able. My legs were shaking too much to stand, and I had nowhere to run to. The only exit was a door, but the ghosts were blocking it.

Having no choice, I pressed my back against the wall and brought my knees to my chest and wrapped my arms around my poor legs. I prayed to the Lord and apologized for the evil things that I did and what my great-grandparents did while they were still alive. I could feel the tears running down and off my cheeks.

"It is too late for the apologies, Archer," the boy said. "You and the rest of your awful family will pay."

"Wait, Jayden!" another ghost pleaded to the boy.

It was a young girl. She pushed past the other ghosts and stood in front of him. She was as tall as him, and her arms were outstretched.

"Do not hurt her, Jayden."

"We have to, Sophie. Do you not smell her? She is an Archer! She came here to take more of what we have left."

"Look at her, Jayden."

"I did look at her." He crossed his ghostly arms. "She disgusts me."

"Then look closer. She is scared of us. Do you not see how she is acting?"

"The Archer is faking. Remember that they can never be trusted."

"So she is faking, huh? I bet that you are going to say that her tears are fake."

He held up his hands in surrender. "Fine, fine. Guess that we will have to play by your rules, Sophie."

"You had better play by my rules. Or you will feel the wrath of Sophie." She turned around to face me and smiled at me. "So you are related to the Archers."

I did not utter a peep or nod or shake my head.

"You are a young Archer. And you are not dead. You are not dead like us. So who are you?"

"I believe that I know who she is," a ghost boy said as he pushed his way through the ghost crowd. "Hi." He waved to me. "I am Noah. I love studying the bodies of water."

I am positive that his mom and dad named him after Noah from the Bible.

"Miriam and Dustin had a son. Then that son and his wife gave birth to a daughter," Noah explained. "The daughter married a guy from a rich family."

"Can you get to the point, Noah?" Jayden said.

"I am getting to it. Now where was I?"

"You just told us that the daughter married a wealthy man," Sophie reminded him.

"Yes, yes. They gave birth to a couple daughters. One is the same age as we were when we passed, and the other is a little older."

Jayden pointed a ghostly finger at me. "Do you think that this Archer is one of the daughters?"

"I do. She has to be the older daughter because she is taller than us."

"What is her name?"

"That I do not know." Noah looked at me and rocked back and forth on the heels of his shoes. "Could you please tell us your first name?"

"A-Ann," I stammered.

"A-Ann? Or just Ann?"

"Just Ann."

"Nice to meet you, Ann. Sorry that it comes to this."

"I...am sorry that it has to come to this too."

"Did you hear that, Jayden? The Archer said that she was sorry," Sophie said.

"Please. The Archer is only saying that because we all will be eating her soul."

I felt as if my soul had left my body. "You...are eating my soul?"

"We only eat souls who did us wrong. The only souls who messed us over are the Archers."

"We would visit the Malevolent Mansion perched on the highest mountain, but we are not as strong as the ghosts of the Archers," Noah said sadly. "We are not strong enough."

Jayden pointed at me once again. "It is good to know and see that some Archers are gullible."

"Are we seriously going to punish Ann for something that was out of her control?" Sophie snapped.

"Miriam and Dustin stole away our lives. We need to steal their great-granddaughter's life."

I let out a scream and said, "I am here to help!"
