Chapter Nine
There was a knock on the bathroom door. It was Annie. "Are you done yet, sister of mine?"
"Almost. Just need another minute."
I had finished applying the soap on my face and was washing it off with the water when I was startled by a weird noise. I could have sworn that it was a growl. A growl that only an animal would make. I quickly rinsed off the rest of the soap and dried my face using a towel. I lowered the towel - and saw her reflection in the mirror.
The woman was a ghost who was a few inches taller than me. She stood in the bathtub and was hunched over. Her eyes were trained on me. She was growling. Growling at me.
She either had to be my grandma or great-grandma because she had wrinkles on her skin and white hair. Speaking of her skin, it was a mix of grey and black. Her black fingernails were so long that they resembled those of a hawk's or eagle's. Her mouth was open wide enough for me to see that the inside was black and that there were no teeth.
I was scared to move, for I figured that she would attack me if I did. The towel slipped from my fingers and fell gracefully to the floor, and I prayed to the Lord from above that I would not die in the hands of the ghost. But I guess that the darn ghost did not care whether or not I moved because she grabbed me.
Her arm slithered over the bathtub and on the floor like a snake. I screamed bloody murder as her cold thumb and fingers wrapped around my ankle and gave me a hard tug. My screams were cut off when my bottom jaw hit the sink as I landed on my stomach. I was in so much pain that I could not move or make a peep. But I had no need to call for help, for my sister heard my cries.
Annie swung open the door and was horrified to see the ghost dragging me towards her. As I inched closer and closer to the bathtub, the ghost started shrinking. That was because she was going down the drain - and she wanted me to join her.
I fought off the pain and tried to grab something, however, my hands were too clammy. Man, I hate when I sweat when I should not be.
Annie picked up a plunger and raised it above her head. "Let go of my sister!" she exclaimed to the ghost. "Or I swear that I will hit you so hard that you get on Pluto!"
The ghost did not release me and instead drooled green slime.
Annie took a whiff. "Oh my gosh!" She covered her nose with her hand. "I will give it to you that you are definitely in the right place. You sure need a bath."
The ghost hissed, and my sister hit her with the plunger. Or at least, she tried to. The plunger went through her.
"Oh. That is right. You are a ghost," she said. She threw the plunger aside and wrapped her thumbs and fingers around both of my wrists. "I got you, sis. I will not allow her to take you away from me."
A low groan escaped from my mouth. "Annie..." I choked out. "I-I cannot—"
She interrupted. "Focus on me. Look at me. Do not worry about the ghost."
Did ya hear that, readers? Annie wants me to forget about that ghost who wants to kill me by squeezing me into a drain. How cute. If she had been in my shoes, she would be panicking.
Now I had two people tugging on me in opposite directions. I was afraid that I would be ripped in half! And that is what happened. I screamed at the top of my lungs.
How many of you bought that ending? You are on book twenty-six of the Forlot series and have not learned that our writer would never be that cruel to us Forlot characters? You still have a ton to learn. I was not ripped apart. I managed to survive the horror in one piece.
Annie shouted for Arnold, and Arnold came faster than you can say the longest word in the English language. He was shocked what he was seeing with his own eyes and shook his fist. He yelled gibberish, not curse words, at the ghost, and the ghost hissed at him before freeing my ankle and going down the drain. Arnold shoved the plug into the drain, and then scooped me up and carried me to the living room that was on the same floor.
I soon found myself resting on the couch with two ice bags on me, one on my ankle where the ghost grabbed me and one against my jaw. I was both surprised and relieved that my jaw was not broken. Arnold and Annie were on the couch that was across from mine. They were asking me if I needed anything else.
"Would you like your makeup kit?" Annie offered. "I can make your face beautiful and paint your nails your favorite color."
"That is sweet, Annie, but I am not in the mood to have makeup on my skin at this moment."
"Okay. How about now?"
"I said no."
"But a moment has passed."
Arnold rubbed his temples. "I am such a fool for leaving you girls. I should be with you at all times. The ghosts of your family will do everything that they can to force you to end up like them."
"They...they want me and Annie...to be ghosts?" I questioned, my voice weakening. "Why?"
"They are jealous that you and your parents are still living. They seek to murder every one of their family members. Once you and your folks are out of the picture, the ghosts will be at peace."
