Chapter Twelve

I was filled with adrenaline. My brain would not let me fall back asleep now. I was covered in goosebumps. My teeth chattered. I slapped my hand over my mouth and held my breath. My tiny hairs stood. Never have I been this afraid. I wanted to climb out from my sleeping bag and jump out the window.

Call me a scaredy-cat. I do not care. I would pick being called all the names in the book over danger any day.

The person on the other side of the door kept knocking and repeated my name in a soothing, yet creepy tone. I did not recognize the voice. Just that it was some man. Was he the one who snapped the photo of me? It could not be a coincidence. Had this guy returned to torment me more? Thank gosh that I locked the door.

"Maybe I should call the hospital," I whispered. In case that you forgot, Forlot does not own a police force. The closest station is in the next town. The hospital will call them once you call the hospital. Pretty cool, huh?

I threw off my blanket and sat up. I quietly crawled out from said sleeping bag and hugged Teddy tightly. I was scared that it was my final night on the planet. I kissed Teddy's head and told him how much I love him. Then I laid him on the sleeping bag and stood. I gazed at my grandma. She is one heavy sleeper, so she did not hear the voice or knocks. I decided to wake her after I called the police. I snatched my phone off the stand and tried turning it on. I pressed the button about ten times. The phone was dead.

"Crub," I hissed. "I forgot to charge my phone. Stupid." I put my phone back on the stand and pressed my back against the wall. "Why do phones stop working in peril times? It is the most cliché device in horror movies."

Now what would I do?

I wanted to shout at the man. I wanted to tell him to go away. Leave me and my family be. But I was too scared to do anything except shake. And I did not want to tick him off. I saw the shadow peeking through the crack of the door. The only thing preventing him from entering was the door - and the lock. I stared at the shadow and wondered if he noticed mine. I prayed for him to leave. And he did. I watched as the shadow moved away from the door. The footsteps fainted.

Should I hurry to my parents' room? But Grandma will be all alone. I gently shook her and begged her to wake up. My voice is one of the few things that can wake her. Her eyes fluttered open. She made eye contact with me and yawned.

"Susu?"

I tried not talking fast. I speak fast when I am fearful. I tugged on her wrist. "We need to go to Mom and Dad's room now."

Grandma jerked free and shook her hand. "What is the matter with you, Susu? Why are you acting like a kid?"

"I am a kid."

"Right. So why are you panicking?"

"Do not panic, but—"

"Why do you get to when I cannot?"

"I am the narrator. If I want to be relatable, I should be panicking."

"So you are not really panicking."

"Oh, I am panicking so much that I am close to wetting myself."

"Then go to the bathroom."

"Not until we are in my parents' room."

"Why must we go to their room?"

I hesitated. "...somebody is in the house."

She sat up. "Of course. You and I are not the only ones here."

"I mean that a stranger is wandering the home. He was standing in front of your door a few minutes ago. H-he was knocking and saying my name. He knew my name. He knew that I was here."

A scowl appeared on Grandma's wrinkly face. "Nobody messes with my granddaughter." She tossed her covers off and climbed out of bed. She grabbed her cane.

"What are you doing, Grandma?"
