Chapter Five

No matter how many times I reassured Mrs. Lloyd that I did not need it, she would not give in. She wanted me to take care of it. She remembered that I needed a new mirror and added that she had no use for it. She stated that a mirror in the living room was ridiculous.

"I do not think that it is ridiculous," I said as I stared at the tall mirror. "This is your house."

"And I do not need the mirror, Susu," she replied. "It is taking up space. Besides, it is hideous."

It did not look hideous to me. Maybe she is not a fan of bright yellow.

"What about your husband? Does he want it? Or give it to your future child."

"I know that you are searching for a new and improved mirror to replace the broken one."

"How did you know?"

"Your mom mentioned it over the phone."

A few minutes later, we were in my house and carrying the mirror to my room. Mrs. Lloyd has been here more times than I can count, so I did not have to give her the directions. Song was the first to see it. She was walking down the hall when she saw us. She greeted Mrs. Lloyd and asked what we were doing.

Song is my older sister and believes that she is too cool for me. She dreams of being a celebrity and only wants to associate with talented people. She really thinks that I am talentless. I can do...nothing. My gosh. It is true. I am good at nothing. I can thank my depression.

I do not know if my parents knew of Song's talent - but the universe did. Song is one of the greatest - if not the greatest - singers that my ears have ever heard. I think that she will become famous and have this terrific life - and leave me in the dust. She probably would change if she knew of my depression...but I do not want it to pull her down too. It is my problem. I need to solve it.

"Your sister helped me clean the attic today, Song. So I gave her this mirror as a token of my appreciation. She needs one badly," Mrs. Lloyd explained.

Song was holding her phone and ran her hand through her long hair. "I was wondering where you were, Susu. I searched this entire house for you."

"You were looking for me?"

"Yeah. I am glad that you returned in time. I was going to leave without you."

"Leave without me? Where are you heading?"

She followed us into my room and plopped on my bed. "My friends and I are taking a walk downtown to enjoy the fresh air and get some exercise before today ends. I was hoping that you would join us."

Mrs. Lloyd and I placed the mirror in a corner. "Thank you for the offer, Song. But I will decline."

I noticed the disappointment in her eyes. "Why?"

I trudged to my bed and laid on my back. I dangled my legs over the edge and spread out my arms. "I-I should rest. I have been on my feet all day."

"Oh, yeah. I should have taken that into consideration. How long have you two been cleaning?"

Mrs. Lloyd beat me to it. "Since this morning. It would not have been finished today if not for Susu. She was a blessing. Now I can make a room in the attic. The walls and floor will be as blue as the night sky. I will hang up a big television and get a couple chairs in there and—"

Song interrupted. "I would consult with your husband if I were you. See what he wants to do."

"Right. I am just so excited! And relieved. My husband can finally stop bickering me to clean that attic. I never will forget, Susu."

"I do not think that I will either," I admitted.

I was so tired that I skipped supper and had wonderful dreams. I was on my side when I woke up and yawned. I was still sleepy and about to go back to sleep - when I felt a tap on my shoulder. I thought that it was only my covers brushing against my shoulder. I rubbed my eyes and squinted at my alarm clock. Almost nine o'clock.

Before I fell back asleep, I noticed a dark figure next to the mirror.

Nothing bizarre started happening until the morning. I woke up and glanced at said alarm clock. Eight o'clock. I sat up and stretched. No longer was I sleepy. I was all ready for the day. If only I had plans. I hoped that Mrs. Lloyd would have something else for me to do. I hate - and feel guilty - wasting time.

I decided to listen to some tunes while getting dressed. Music gives me life and hope for the future. I sing and dance to it - even though that I am an awful singer. My voice cracks on every word. I threw off said covers and stood. I grabbed my phone and was going to turn it on. I became confused and scratched my head. I turned off my phone before Mrs. Lloyd and I came here.

How could it be on?

What terrified me was what I found in my pictures. My phone was already in the Photos app. I squinted at one of the pictures - and my heart dropped into my belly. It was a picture of me sleeping. It was taken last night.

Who took my photo?

I was startled by a knock on the door. I scurried to said door and opened it. Nobody was there. I heard another knock. It came from the other side of my room. I gazed behind me and shut the door. Maybe the house settled. Maybe something knocked over - but how?

I noticed something on the mirror and squinted. It was a hand.
