Chapter Twelve
You cannot begin to imagine how upset I was. I was so close. Sooooooo close in retrieving my list. I had taken one step forward - only to take lots of steps back. Why me? Why must I go through this? Am I being punished by the Lord? Does He think that my theory was stupid too? Is it because I am the only person in the mall who knows that monsters exist?
The new monster - a werewolf - took me by surprise. I jumped back and managed to keep my balance. Gosh. I was not expecting to encounter two monsters, let alone one. I tugged on my shirt as I swallowed hard. My poor heart picked up speed. My breathing was shallow. I am not a monster expert. I love monsters, but do not know everything about them. I put a hand on my stomach. I had this terrible feeling. My gut was telling me that the werewolf was bad news.
"That werewolf is an evil monster," I mumbled. "He or she is nothing like the witch. What does he or she want anyway?" I hissed. "Why does he or she have the paper that belongs to me?!"
The werewolf wagged his tail and leaped over the witch and grabbed ahold of my list. My innocent list. He had to grab it in the worst way possible. Not with his paws, but with his mouth. His sharp teeth dug in the paper. I gasped and covered my mouth. Now my list had holes. Gigantic holes that could never be filled. It is one thing to fix quilts. It is another to fix papers. You just cannot fix paper. Better to start over, which I did not desire to do.
The werewolf landed on all fours and looked at me and Savannah. He barked and ran around in a circle. Did I mention that he is a pup? He is a werewolf pup. You all assumed that he was a regular werewolf! I love tricking other people. Ha!
"Oh my gosh," I said.
"I apologize, Carly," Savannah spoke. "I am sorry."
I locked my eyes on her and lowered my arms. "W-why are you sorry? Not your fault that wolf took my list and is running around like a dog."
"You realize that dogs and wolves are similar. They act almost the same way." She motioned to said werewolf. "Wolves - or werewolves - are wild. They will eat pretty much whatever moves. It is why it is important to keep an eye on them at all times. Otherwise...this will occur. Again, I am sorry." She walked to the pup and dropped to her knees. "It is okay, buddy. It is okay. You are safe. Safe and sound."
The werewolf puppy stopped running and looked up at her. He barked and wagged his tail.
She petted him. "Who is a good boy? You are! Yes! You are such a good boy!"
He barked louder and sniffed her hand.
She pointed to the floor. "Now put the list down. Put it down."
He tilted his head to the side and lowered his head, but did not release said list. He did not understand. He did not understand what she wanted from him.
"The paper. The paper in your mouth. I want you to let go of it. Put it on the floor. You hear me?"
He hesitated and raised his furry head.
Savannah shook her finger at him. "If you do not put it down, then I will not give you your bath. I will also not give you the gift that I got for you."
The pup whimpered and finally set the list on the floor. He sat and covered his eyes. She picked up the list and him and kissed his wet nose. She kept telling him how he was a good boy and promised to give him his gift as soon as they were home.
"Does that pup belong to you?" I asked.
"Yep," the witch replied. "It is why I apologized to you. He is my responsibility. My family's responsibility."
"You should teach your pet how to behave."
"He is not my pet. He is...my brother."
