Chapter Eleven

Savannah snapped her fingers once again, and an item appeared and was in the air. She grabbed it and gave it to me. I took it and examined it. I could not believe my eyes. I wanted to squeal until my throat ached. What I was holding was this ticket. It did not feel like one, but it was a ticket. This is what it read:

Congratulations! You are invited to the:
MONSTER CONVENTION!
Be there, or be circle. No humans allowed.

I moved the ticket around in my hand as I realized that it was not some paper. It neither felt like or moved like paper. I waved the ticket in the air and asked the witch why it was so darn heavy. She explained that is the way how monsters make their tickets. Who wants to hand a monster a piece of paper when it can be heavy like said rocks? According to monsters, paper equals weakness.

"You realize that paper comes from trees," I said. "The trees are pretty tough. So how can you monsters think that paper is a sign of weakness? It does not make any sense."

Savannah's eyes lowered. "Carly, is it? You are not like me. You are not a witch. You are not even a monster. It does not make sense to you because you are a human." She clicked her tongue. "Just an average human with a boring life."

"Hey. I may have a boring life, but I am not average. If you do not believe me, ask my friends. They state that I am the weirdest person that they have met."

She rested her hands on her hips. "I cannot ask them."

"Why not? You scared of humans or something?"

"I am a monster. I cannot be scared of your kind. I can never be afraid." She cleared her throat. "So the reason why I cannot ask your friends is because I need to go. I need to be home before my parents ground me for life. Have you ever been grounded for life?"

"Nope."

"Me neither, but my sisters have. They tell me that it is torture. Pure torture. I do not want to end up like them because I am a good witch. They would rather be killed by your kind than suffer."

I brushed back my hair. "Is that not...suicide?"

Savannah waved a finger left and right. "Not if they are killed by accident. But it is only an analysis. My sisters would never go that far. They do not want to pass until their time."

"That is a relief to hear."

She snapped her fingers. A wooden broom appeared in her hand. "It was nice knowing you, Carly, and I do not mean it in a bad way. Hope to see you again soon, even if you are human."

"Right back at ya."

As we were shaking hands, Savannah spotted the piece of paper. It was my list. It was sticking out. I was going to stuff it back into my pocket, but she snatched it up. I tried to retrieve it, but she held it out of my reach. This low growl escaped from my mouth. She was acting like a bully. I clenched a fist. I do not take kindly to bullies.

The witch raised her hands as if surrendering. "Dang. I did not know that you were a werewolf. My apologies. I only wanted to see this paper."

My eyebrows shot up. I tilted my head to the side. "No. I am no werewolf. What makes you think that I am?" I lifted my arm and sniffed under it. "I do not smell, do I now?"

She leaned forward and took a whiff. "Uh, do you want my honest opinion?"

I rolled my eyes and held out an open hand. "The piece of paper. That is what I want."

She looked at the paper. Then back at me. "But I would love to see what is on the paper. Or you could tell me."

"I cannot tell you because it is a secret."

"So that means that I can see it."

"No!" I grabbed my list and pulled it.

And it ripped. My list ripped in half.

Savannah and I gasped when we heard the rip. I had a half, and she had the other. I raised mine to my face. I just could not believe it. I could not believe that my list was ruined. That list that I always carried around...was destroyed. I watched as the ripped paper slipped out of my grasp and fluttered to the floor. I teared up.

I should not make a huge deal out of paper, however, it was more than paper. It was a list. A list that took me a while to create. A tear went down my cheek as my poor heart crumbled.

"Oh my gosh," Savannah said. "Oh my gosh. I-I did not mean to rip the paper. I am sorry, Carly. I am so sorry. I feel terrible. B-but you are in luck." She picked up the other half and gave me a nervous smile. "I-I am not the greatest witch from my village. It does not mean that I do not know a couple tricks." She waved her hand, and the pieces floated into the air. She waved her hands as her eyes changed to purple.

I sniffed and wiped away my tear.

"Magical witches from above. Make the item see better days! Magical! Magical! Magical! Let it be!"

I thought that she would chant gibberish. I was wrong.

I became amazed as purple light surrounded the pieces and put them together. Flash! I had been blinded for a few seconds. Blinded by the light. When it died down, I rubbed my eyes and looked. Savannah was holding it. I was both happy and relieved. My list was restored!

Before I could speak, another monster showed his face - and grabbed my list.
