Chapter Twenty-One
I was prepared for anything that they would throw at me. Anything but what Mom did next. She got up and grabbed ahold of my bag, causing me to stumble back. I demanded to know what was up, but Mom ignored me, unzipped my bag, and pulled out my crossbow and arrow. She stormed past me, and I was on her tail.
"Mom! Just where do you think that you are going with my crossbow?" I demanded. Scarlett and Dad were trailing behind me.
My mother did not answer my question. Instead, she said, "I cannot believe that you still have this cursed thing. Your father and I should have never let you keep this...this harmful weapon."
"It is not harmful. Well, only harmful to those that try to harm me."
Mom glared at me as soon as the four of us reached the bottom of the stairs. "With the attitude that you have shown, Margie, would you..." She hesitated, and I noticed a tear trickling down her cheek. "...would you use it on your own family?"
Despite the calmness of my voice, I was fuming! How hard was it for them to trust me? How hard was it to understand me at least a little? Besides Lean and Sarah and Mr. Hawk and his monster friends, only the Monster Protectors truly understood the type of person that I was meant to be.
I held out an open hand to Mom and motioned for her to give me back what was mine. She shook her head and repeated her question.
"Would you shoot me and your father and your sister with this weapon of yours? Are you willing to do such a thing?"
As you read on, keep in mind that I was very angry. I replied without choosing better words.
"You know what? Yeah! I would. And I would not stop there. I would continue putting small holes in your skins until the three of you collapse and pass. That way, I can remain in Forlot and continue my job as the Monster Protector without having you idiots holding me back!"
As you readers might have guessed, my family was both shocked - almost paralyzed - and heartbroken at my explanation. Dad yanked off his glasses and wiped them using his shirt, and Scarlett turned away from me and sobbed softly. Did I care? Not at the time.
Mom tightened her grips on my crossbow and sniffed. "I...I lost my younger daughter."
I screamed in protest as she stomped towards the fireplace and tossed my crossbow and arrow in the fire. I screamed again, pushed her aside, and watched as the hot flames engulfed what used to be my weapon.
It was too late. I was devastated. No longer was I just mad. I was sad. I was so upset that I wanted to run away from my stupid family and be alone. That is exactly what I did. But before I fled, I faced my parents and sister.
"Why are you dragging me down with you?! Why are you keeping me from my destiny?!"
"Margie..." Scarlett started, but I did not let her finish. I took off with tears in my eyes.
I scrambled to the outside world and ran and ran and ran. Where did I go to, you may ask? Take a guess. If you said the area where the bodies of the Monster Protectors are, you would be correct.
I reached the area and caught my breath. Then I sank to my knees and cried on the grass. I tugged on some of the green straws of the soft grass and hiccuped as I talked to myself.
"I am surrounded by idiots. I am surrounded by idiots! Why do they just not understand? Is it that hard to listen to your younger daughter or younger sister? Do they not want me to have a voice?" I wiped my nose with my sleeve. "I wish that the Monster Protectors were here. I want to chat with them about my problematic family."
"And so you shall," I overheard a female voice. I immediately knew whose it was.
"Lean!"
I sat up and spotted my ghost friend floating to the area. She stopped when she was next to me and told me to hold out my hand. I did so, and she set the jar of the Monster Protector eyeballs in my palm. I was both taken aback and excited at the same time.
"You found them, Lean! Where were they?"
"Buried below the mansion."
My eyes widened. "You are kidding."
"Does it look like that I am kidding?" She gave me a playful slap on my back. "Now what are you waiting for?"
I jumped back on my feet and unscrewed the lid. I pulled off the lid, and the eyeballs flew out and disappeared in the ground. I assumed that they were returning to their rightful owners - and was right.
Only a minute later, the ground within the area changed to pure white, and Lean and I witnessed in amazement as the bodies, the fleshy bodies, passed through the ground and stood on their feet. The Monster Protector in front of me was, of course, McKinley McCall.
I squealed. "McKinley?"
McKinley smirked and saluted to me. "Thank you, Margie Morgan. Thank you for freeing me and the other Monster Protectors. We are forever in your debt." He took my hand and planted a kiss on top of it. "You are indeed the best Monster Protector ever."
