Chapter Twenty-Five

The dad robot screamed bloody murder. Ruth and the robot mom gasped at the same time, and Ruth grabbed my wrist and spun me around to face her. She demanded to know why I would do such a thing to harm her father and added that I would be in jail for the rest of my days. I could not do anything but apologize to her and order her to run.

"You are not my mom or dad," Ruth said. "Why should I take orders from you?"

"I am the only person in the kitchen who is human besides you and cares about your safety."

She released me and seemed concerned. Concerned about me. "You need help. You should be locked up in the mental asylum, and the guards should throw away the key."

"Good idea, Ruth" the dad robot spoke in a low voice. He had his hands covering his face. "We will drive Robin to the asylum and have her admitted." He slowly lowered his hands and pulled out the knife, and Ruth and I could clearly see his robot eye. It was flashing bright red and had metal and wires around it. "What do you say, Ruth? And after we drop off Robin, we can get some ice cream."

Ruth and I screamed at the top of our lungs. I was happy that she finally understood now why she and I needed to get away from her house, but now that we both knew, what would the robots do to us?

The dad robot held out his arms and had his hands in gripping positions. He was going to grab ahold of his daughter. I mean, Ruth.

"What is the matter, Ruth? Is Robin scaring you?"

"Cut the act," the robot mom said. "She knows that we are robots." She narrowed her eyebrows at me. "It is all thanks to you."

Ruth watched in horror as the robot mom wrapped her robotic thumb and fingers around my neck and hoisted me into the air. She tightened her grip, and I kicked with my legs and started to choke.

"Stop!" Ruth shouted.

"No can do, honey," the robot dad said. "You and the farmer girl know too much."

"Are you afraid that I will tell a living soul that you two are robots? 'Cause I will not."

The robots glanced at each other, and then back at her.

"Run that by us again," the robot mom said.

"If you are uncomfortable with me telling the people in this town the truth about you, I will not do it. Also, I understand why you desire to keep your secret...well, a secret from the humans. I would not want to have attention and be hauled away by the government if I were a robot. I would want to have privacy and live my life the way that I see it.

The robot dad quirked an eyebrow. "So...you want to be a robot like us. 'Cause you should know that is impossible."

"I do not want to be a robot. Not by a long shot. I just want to let you know that I understand you and vow to keep your secret hidden in the shadows. I do not mind that you are robots. I find it pretty cool." She hugged them. "I love you."

The robot dad wiped away a tear. "How thoughtful you are, Ruth."

"Man. Now I feel bad for wanting to get rid of you," the robot mom confessed. "We cannot possibly destroy her."

The robot dad said, "As long as she does not tell anyone, I say that we spare her." He looked down at Ruth. "I hope that you know why we cannot spare Robin."

Ruth pulled away from them and nodded. "Go ahead. End her. It will be the best thing that has ever happened."

"What?!" I managed to choke out.

The robot mom grinned at me. "Goodbye, Robin. It was a 'pleasure' knowing you." She squeezed my neck, choking me even more.

"I have to use the restroom," Ruth announced. "I will be right back." She hurried up the stairs, leaving me to die.

I tried to kick the robot. I was beginning to receive a headache, and my vision became blurry. Never would I have imagined in a million years that I would die by a couple robots. My body was as weak as water, and I was about to call it quits.

Then the most surprising thing occurred.

Despite the fact that my vision was blurry, I could have sworn that I spotted Ruth slowly and quietly working her way down the stairs. She was holding an object. A bucket.

When she reached the bottom of the steps, Ruth rushed to the robots and threw the bucket at them. No. What was inside the bucket. Water.

The water splashed onto the robots, and they uttered robotic screams and short-circuited. The robot mom released her hold that she had on me, and I backed away as the robots landed in a heap on the kitchen floor. Blue sparks flew.

Ruth tossed the bucket aside and grabbed my hand, forcing me out of the kitchen and the house. She remarked how that was a close one. I asked her where she was heading, and she said that she was dropping me off at my farm.

"What about you?"

"What about me?"

"You do not have a place to stay."

"Yes, I do. I have a house. We were just in it."

"But it is not safe there anymore."

"It is safe now that I short-circuited those robots."

"Ruth, there is a small robot in your basement that repairs the other robots whenever they need it. The small robot will find out that the robots are damaged and either repair them or build a new set and implant the same memory drives."

"If that does happen, the robot adults will taste water again."

"But we cannot do it forever."
