Chapter Twenty-Two
You know the white bracelets that a doctor or nurse puts on you? Mine was on my left wrist, and I somehow forgot about it because I was as weak as water.
I finally made it to the door without tripping on thin air and pushed it open. I poked my head through the doorway and glanced down both directions. The left was a dead end, and the right was swarming with doctors and nurses. I could have made a run for the exit and shove the workers along the way, but I surely would have been caught.
I was going to forget about running away because there was no safe way out when I spotted a particular door that was across from my room. A door with a sign hanging from a nail. The sign read 'Do Not Enter' in bright yellow, and I would have obeyed it...if I were still my good and idiot self.
I was no longer Ada Maxwell. I was now...well, I was still figuring out a new name at that time.
I staggered to the door and wrapped my thumb and fingers around the doorknob. I pulled, using the rest of my strength, but the door decided to give me heck. Actually, it was not the door's fault that it would not open. It was locked by the staff, and I discovered that for myself when a female doctor needed some supplies from that room.
The female doctor was coming my way, and I dashed back into my room and left my door open a crack. I poked my eye, my good eye, through the crack and watched how it was done.
She came to a halt in front of the locked door and took out a set of keys from the pocket of her lab coat. She inserted a silver key into the keyhole and was able to open the door. She dropped the keys back in her pocket and walked on in.
Lucky me. I could view a few things that were in there. Operation tools. First aid kits. Medicine. Whatever you would find at a hospital was stored in that very room.
My eyes fell on a white trash bag that was filled with used shots. The only reason that I knew that they were shots was because of the one that was sticking out of the bag, creating a hole. I suddenly came up with a brilliant - and not-so-good - idea.
After opening my door slowly, I tiptoed to the room across from me and let myself in. The doctor must have heard my footsteps because she stopped what she was doing and focused her attention on me.
"Oh. Sweetheart." One look at my outfit, and she knew that I was a patient. "You are not supposed to be in here. Only hospital staff." She gently took my arm. "Come on. I will take you back to your room. What is your room number?"
I did not answer her question and instead pretended to be naive and grasped the side of the bag. "Ooh. What is this?"
"Please do not touch the bag."
The doctor grabbed my wrist - and I gave her a good punch in the face. She moaned and stumbled back. I let my hand and arm slither into the trash bag and pulled out a used shot. It was filthy both on the outside and inside.
The doctor raised her head, adjusted her glasses, and gasped. "Do not use that on you. Put that down!"
I giggled, and it gave her goosebumps. "What kind of person do you think that I am? I am not going to use it on myself."
"Good." She held out her hand with her fingers uncoiled. "Give it to me."
"Oh, I will give it to you."
Before she could react, I tightened my grip on the shot and stabbed her in the palm. She screamed, immediately yanked out the shot, and fainted a few seconds later. She dropped to her side, and her glasses slid off and clattered to the floor. I picked the glasses up and got another brilliant idea.
About ten minutes later, I became a completely different person. Nobody would recognize me as a patient, for I now resembled a doctor. I "borrowed" her glasses. I "borrowed" her ponytail holder. I "borrowed" her lab coat and washed my hands. I would now blend in with the crowd.
I whistled a lovely yet creepy tune as I exited the room and joined the staff. A few of them thought that I was that female doctor and wished me a pleasant night. I told them that I was leaving the hospital for the night and neared the double doors to the outside world.
"Ava!" A male doctor pulled me back by his grasp on my shoulder. "We need you."
Huh. The female doctor's first name was apparently Ava.
I spun around. "What do you want?" I demanded. "I have worked all day and need my beauty sleep."
"You will be allowed to go home right after you attend to your last patient."
"Uh, why can you not do it?"
"I am not a brain surgeon. You are."
I was speechless at what he said. My lips trembled.
"Come on, Ava." He forced me to a room that was dark with the exception of a single lightbulb that was hanging from the ceiling.
"Uh, why did you bring me here?"
He pushed me to a chair where an unconscious patient was sitting. The top of his head was covered by a large, blue cloth. A silver tray was lying on a small table, and on top of that tray were sharp tools.
"Why are there sharp tools in the same room with the patient?" I asked. "He cannot use them."
"He will not be using them. You will."
"...what do you mean?"
"You are to use these tools to cut him open and reveal his brain."
"What?!"
