Chapter Twenty-Eight
You would not believe how many Forlot fans there were. Actually, you probably would since that you are reading this book. The line for a Forlot autograph stretched to the back of the shop, and we characters received compliments for our so-called "costumes."
Sophia, Kathy, and I were sitting on a wooden bench and watching our writer sign Forlot books and any other things that the fans wanted her signature on. Ava was standing in front of a shelf and skimming through book after book. Unlike the other books, the last book that she pulled off the shelf was interesting enough for the rest of us to see. She did not skim the pages. Just the cover.
Ava ran until she was behind the bench. "Boo!"
Of course, Kathy and I were not taken aback by her attempt to give us heart attacks. Sophia screamed at the top of her lungs and fell off the bench and onto the carpet.
"Ow," Sophia said.
While my partner assisted her, I scolded Ava.
"That was low, Ava. Even for you."
"Do not blame me, Cassandra. It is your fault."
"My fault?!"
"You got that right. If you would just get capturing Mary Sue over with, we would not have to be concerned about her showing up here."
I pointed an accusing finger at her. "You do not know what you are talking about. Do you have any idea how hard it is to capture a person who is mentally unstable?"
She flipped her hair. "Do not use that as an excuse for you. You had plenty of time to nab her and take her back to Forlot."
"I have been trying my best. And why have you not been helping? The only reason that I allowed you to come was because you could get through to Mary Sue. Instead, you are encouraging her!"
"I am the greatest villain in the fictional world. What did you expect?"
I was so angry that I thought that I would pull my hair out until I was bald. Not only was I frustrated at her, but also at Sophia - because I assumed that she had something to do with the restaurant burning down - and Mary Sue and her flipping mess.
Why did it have to be my problem to hunt her down and stop her plan once and for all? Why could it not have been somebody else's? I am a secret agent. I am supposed to be battling cool villains, not a girl who was mentally unstable and breaking the fourth wall.
I growled at Ava and strolled to Kathy who was dusting off Sophia's clothes. "Kathy, I am going to the beanbag section and resting on one of the beanbags."
"Okay. Are you feeling alright? You sound like that you are out of breath and exhausted."
"I am exhausted. I just need to get my mind off of Mary Sue and her shenanigans for at least a minute."
I headed to the beanbags and chose the purple one to sit in. But before my body could drop in it and sink, someone else beat me to it.
"Mary Sue," I snarled with clenched teeth.
Mary Sue was covered in cement and had small pieces of tile in her messy hair. She even got the purple beanbag dirty.
She waved. "Hi, Cassandra."
"How did you...?" My voice trailed off, and my eyes shifted towards the ceiling. There was a huge hole! "Did you make that hole?!"
"Well, duh. How else was I supposed to get in this bookstore?"
"Oh, I do not know." I gestured to the door. "Maybe the door!"
She stood and brushed the tile pieces from her hair. "I am surprised that is coming from you, Cassandra. You of all people should know that one of the best ways to sneak into a building is by cutting a hole through the roof and ziplining your way down." She sighed heavily. "Too bad that my zipline broke."
I no longer cared how dirty she was and gripped her shoulders. "This is not some mission, Mary Sue! Nobody is in danger. Everybody is happy."
Mary Sue narrowed her eyebrows at me. "Our writer is not happy."
I motioned to Ash J. "See the smile on her face?"
"Yes, but it is a fake."
"It is not a fake!"
"It is. And I can prove it."
Mary Sue pushed me hard enough to knock me off my own two feet and rushed to the center of the store. She announced that the real worlders would very soon be nothing but a bad memory and fired at all the real worlders with her special gun. It was special because it shot out red ropes that wrapped around the victim.
Most of the customers made their way to the front door, however, it was no use. Mary Sue shut the door with glue that she created in Libby's lab. She told me that.
I grabbed ahold of her, but she was surprisingly strong for me. She pried me off her and shot me. I was now on the floor and wrapped by a couple red ropes.
"Sorry, Cassandra. But you need to stay out of the way until the deed is done."
Kathy and Sophia would have stopped her - okay, maybe not Sophia - if they were not tied up together.
"It is up to our writer to save us and these real worlders," Kathy informed me and Sophia. "She has to be able to get through to her."
Ash was already up and had the expression of horror written all over her face. It was obvious that she did not like what one of her characters was doing.
"Mary Sue!"
Mary Sue nabbed the last real worlder in the shop and ran to her. She gave her a hug and said, "You called me?"
"What do you think that you are doing?"
She pulled away from Ash and looked up at her. "Are you happy?"
