Chapter Thirty-Seven

My used-to-be friend and I did not understand at first. We thought that she left the building. Turns out, we were correct. Katrina did leave, but returned to this floor because she forgot an important document. And yes, the document is what you are thinking of. She forgot to take it from the folder and remembered it when she was opening her car door.

Katrina had two options. She would come back to her desk and snatch it or risk the danger of someone finding it by accident. Someone like her boss. Her body filled with panic juice, she raced back into the building and to the elevator. It would have been nothing more than a simple mistake if I had not read the paper.

Katrina's eyebrows were narrowed. She had her arms crossed and was tapping her foot. She asked us in a frightening tone why we were going through her desk, to which Mary Sue responded that we were using her computer to look up important information.

"No one besides my boss and I is allowed to use this computer," she scolded. "You girls are in big trouble. How old are you?"

"We are in our teen years," I confessed.

She raised her eyebrows, and her frown turned right side up. "Figured it as much." She unzipped her purse and pulled out her cellphone. "What are your first and last names?"

"I am Mary Sue," my used-to-be friend introduced herself. "Mary is my first name, and Sue is my last name."

Katrina shifted her gaze to me. "And you?"

This was awkward. I did not want to tell her the name that Dr. Maxwell gave me. She would surely connect the dots and take me to him against my will. So I quickly began thinking of possible names, and one stuck out to me the most.
——————————————————————————
About ten minutes later, I became a completely different person. Nobody would recognize me as a patient, for I now resembled a doctor. I "borrowed" her glasses. I "borrowed" her ponytail holder. I "borrowed" her lab coat and washed my hands. I would now blend in with the crowd.

I whistled a lovely yet creepy tune as I exited the room and joined the staff. A few of them thought that I was that female doctor and wished me a pleasant night. I told them that I was leaving the hospital for the night and neared the double doors to the outside world.

"Ava!" A male doctor pulled me back by his grasp on my shoulder. "We need you."

Huh. The female doctor's first name was apparently Ava.
——————————————————————————
Ava. Something about that name gave me the chills. I loved it!

"My name is Ava," I lied.

"Ava who?" Katrina said.

Now I needed a new last name. I noticed from the corner of my eye a person's full name on the computer screen. His or her last name was Campbell.

"Ava Campbell," I said my new name. "I will always be Ava Campbell."

Mary Sue and I watched as she tapped on her phone. "And what are your phone numbers? I will be calling your parents and telling them that you two are trespassing."

I was going to protest, but my used-to-be friend beat me to the punchline.

"You cannot do that!"

"Watch me."

"No. What I mean is that you cannot call our parents because...we do not know the numbers."

She looked up from her phone. "You have got to be kidding me. Neither of you know your own phone numbers?"

"We never found it necessary to memorize them."

"So you do not know your home number, your parents' work number, your school number, or any other number that is out there?"

We shook our heads.

She uttered a low growl and shoved her phone back in her purse. Then she zipped up her purse, snatched up the folder, and opened it. She flipped through the papers, and her expression changed from frustration to worry.

"Where is it?"

"Where is what?" I asked in my sweet, innocent voice.

"I am missing an extremely important document from this extremely important folder. Where did it go? It was in here before I left." She tossed the folder of papers onto the desk. "Oh my gosh. I pray that my boss does not have it." Her eyes locked on me, and then moved to Mary Sue. "Do either of you have it?"

"Have what?" Mary Sue wondered as if she had no clue.

"The document." She pointed a finger at the folder. "It was in this folder. Do you girls have it?"

"We told you earlier that we were using your computer. We did not touch anything else on your desk," I lied.

Katrina tugged on the fabric of her dress and breathed hard. She was now more than worried. She was scared.

"You two had better tell me the truth. Did my boss ever come out from his office while I was gone?"

"If he did, we would not be here," I explained.

"Oh, man. You are right." She scratched the side of her head. "What am I going to do? Whoever has that document could use it against me."

"Huh. You are not as dumb as I assumed." I reached into my pocket and took out the paper. I unfolded it and showed it to her from afar.

Katrina gasped. "That is it. That is the missing document! You lied to me. You claimed that you did not have it!"

"I have been practicing."

"Give it to me!"

She made a grab for it, however, I had it out of her reach. I clearly told her that I would not give this back to her until she did something for me.

"What would a teenager like you possibly want from me?"

"Oh, I promise that you will fall in love with my offer. I want you and Dr. Maxwell to go on a date."
