Chapter Thirty-Nine
It did not take us the entire chapter to get to the laboratory. We knew the ups and downs of this place and found the blue double doors that separated the lab from the rest of the building. I pushed open the doors, and we entered Dr. Maxwell's lab.
It was huge. Actually, it was enormous. Actually, it was so enormous that the word 'enormous' cannot begin to describe how gigantic it really was. You could do so much in here. The possibilities were endless. Both the floor and walls were a pretty blue. Rolling trays, test tubes, rolling chairs, and liquids were among what you would find.
Though, those things were not what caught our attentions. If you viewed four unconscious people floating in large tubes, you would be shocked...and curious.
Each of the four people had their own tube. And yes, they all were fully clothed. I will go from left to right. We will start with the two adults. They did not seem old enough to be in their golden years, but looked old enough to be between twenty and fifty. Next was a girl who had the face and looks of a teenager. She had brown hair and wore a dress. Last but not least was a boy who also seemed to be in his teen years. He was the one whom I became interested in.
Now before you stop reading and write your sickly fanfiction about me, I should warn you that the boy is not my love interest. I do not love him, and he does not love me. Otherwise, you would be shipping me with my brother, and you know that shipping siblings is absolutely disgusting. So do not do it.
My used-to-be friend and I stood in front of the tubes and next to each other, and she leaned towards me and whispered in my ear. "I think that I like him."
I faced her. "Who?"
"The handsome boy floating in that tube. I do believe that he is my prince."
I slapped her face, not hard though, and scolded her. "You will not be with my brother. Ash J. is putting you with somebody else."
She was surprised by this. "That guy is your brother? I had no idea that you have a brother."
I patted the top of her head. "The feeling is mutual. I did not know either."
"About my soulmate, Ada - I mean, Ava - who do you think that he will be?"
"Easy question. Caleb."
"Caleb?"
"To be more precise, Anti-Caleb."
"Caleb has a twin brother?"
I shook my head and had to explain to her that there is another town that is the opposite of ours. It is called LotFor, and when our Caleb helps bring peace to LotFor and its people, two antis get a divorce. If you answered Anti-Caleb and Anti-Cindy, you would be correct. They decided that it would be best if they separated and just remained friends. Then Mary Sue and Anti-Caleb got to know each other and fell in love. They had plenty in common.
"Is Anti-Caleb a prince?" Mary Sue asked.
"Better than that," I responded. "He is the ruler of LotFor. And when you two become a couple—"
She interrupted me because she already knew what I was about to say. "I will be a glorious queen!"
I moved over to a table. "Who knows? Maybe you and Anti-Caleb will have a child."
She blushed and giggled. "I cannot imagine giving birth to our child."
I squinted at the boy in the tube, for I thought that there was something off about him. It was hard to tell because of the disgusting liquid that he was floating in, but I managed to see and was taken aback.
The boy's right eyeball was missing. There was only an empty socket!
"Do you see what I see, Mary Sue?"
"The only thing that I see is this closet of clothes." She was by a wooden closet. "Whoever bought these clothes has a sad taste of fashion."
"Mary Sue!" I pointed to the table. "Over here. Now."
"You cannot tell me what to do. You are not my mommy. My mommy is dead."
"I do not need to be your mommy to give you a good slapping."
I never did witness how she reacted because we both overheard a loud pound. Pound! Then another. Pound! Then two more. Pound, pound!
The sudden sounds were coming from one of the large tubes. We turned our attentions to the row of tubes and saw that someone was pounding their fists against the glass. It was the boy. He was awake.
My used-to-be friend let out a yelp and rushed to my side. The boy roared and lowered his arms to his sides.
I examined him from the top of his head to the bottom of his shoes. "What are you?" I said. "Are you an animal? I mean, seriously. What is with the roar?"
He apparently did not like my joke because he let out another roar and slammed his fist on the glass again. This time, the place where he hit cracked.
"Dang," I said. "The glass on the tube is not as strong as I assumed."
"Who are you?" the boy hissed.
"He does talk," Mary Sue commented. "I assumed that he was part animal."
I proudly took a step forward. "Before I answer your question, you have to answer mine."
"Fair enough. What is your puny question?"
"Do you know who created you?"
He squinted at me as if I were some alien. "Created...?"
"It means to be brought into existence. You exist because of the same scientist who made me exist."
He tilted his head to the side. "What does it mean to exist?"
I sighed and put on glasses that had been lying on the table. I said, "This will be a while. Head to the next chapter."
