Chapter Four
My "father," Dr. Maxwell, had taken me under his wing and taught me a lot. As in, his lies. To this day, I cannot believe that I bought such obvious. Then again, I was not myself. My true self.
Now, do not assume that everything that he taught me was blatant lies. He did tell me the truth at times. For example, he taught me which English words belong to certain objects.
Would you believe me that it took me two weeks to learn what a couch was? I kept calling the hippo a couch!
I was an idiot girl.
Once I had most of my English down, Dr. Maxwell taught me about the world and how it works - and that is when the lies began.
One of his believable and ridiculous lies was when he convinced me that he was a god, and what made it worse was that he taught me that only humans could be gods and that there was no perfect god.
Be glad that I do not attempt to disprove God's existence. Makes me the better villain, huh?
"I am a god," he would say to me. "I am smarter and better than most people, so that is why I am a god."
My eyes sparkled. "Ooh!" I clapped my hands with excitement. "My own daddy is an all-powerful god!"
He smiled and laid a hand on my shoulder. "I do make mistakes, Ada, as all gods do, but if you listen to my orders, I promise you that you will go places."
Oh, I did go places. Just not in the way that neither of us expected.
Two months after I was created passed before my very eyes, and I was hanging out with Dr. Frost's daughter, Mary Sue. I will admit that even back then when we were on good terms, Mary Sue was annoying. I know that she was not doing it on purpose or out of spite because that is part of her character, but hearing this girl brag on about how perfect of a character she was and that she could do no wrong bugged me.
Mary Sue and I were sitting on the couch and watching one of our favorite cartoons about a sponge. By the way, I still enjoy that show.
I was thankful that the Mary Sue had shut up about herself and instead was commenting on the show's funny moments.
My used-to-be friend had a bowl of popcorn in her lap and was eating some of the popcorn. "I hope that this cartoon never ends," she said as she chewed.
"I hope that it is not...cancelled too," I replied, using the correct word. I gasped. "Did you hear that? I used one of my new words!"
She quickly faced me. "That I did." She squealed. "You had better cross that word off in your notes."
"Yes, yes, yes."
My little notebook and pen were on the table, and I picked them up and opened my notebook, turning to the page with the list of words that I was supposed to use in my speech before the end of the week.
I ran my finger down the list. "Cancelled...aha!" I crossed out the word. "Only four more words until the list is completed."
"And that will be the fifth completed list," Mary Sue said. "Am I right?"
"Yep. The part is that Daddy promised that he would get me whatever I want after the list is finished."
"Lucky you. I wish that my dad would do that. He thinks that I have enough. But I guess that is how it is when you are perfect."
I closed my notebook and tossed it and the pen on the table. Then, there was a knock at the door.
"That is strange," Mary Sue stated. "Who could be visiting the lab at this hour? It is practically midnight!"
I shrugged, got up, and hurried to the front door. I opened it and saw an older man and girl around my age on the other side. The man was wearing glasses, and the girl had blond hair.
"Good evening," the man greeted. "I am Dr. Henry O'Connor. I am close to Dr. Hugo Maxwell and wondering if he is here."
"Sorry, Dr. O'Connor. My father is not here. He left an hour ago to spread his evil."
His eyes went wide. "Your...father?"
I nodded. "Yes. Hugo is my loving daddy."
He raised an eyebrow. "Are you Ada? If you do not mind me asking."
"Yes, I am."
"Excellent! You are the person that I wanted to see." He pushed the girl into the lab. "This is Sarah, my granddaughter. I would like you and Sarah to get to know each other and you know, do what girls do."
I glanced at Sarah, and then back up at him. "You mean like makeup and talking about boys?"
"Exactly. I am sure that you and my granddaughter will get along well. It is not like that you will turn against her." He chuckled softly. "That was a joke."
I motioned for Dr. O'Connor to come inside. "Are you coming in or...?"
"No, no. I just came to drop off my granddaughter. I will retrieve her in the morning." He patted my head. "It was a pleasure to finally meet you."
We said our goodbyes, and I shut the door and looked at Sarah. "So what do you want to do? I suggest that we get something to eat besides popcorn."
I noticed right off the bat that something was wrong with her. Her head was down, and she was hugging herself.
She was not happy.
"We can do whatever you want," I spoke to her. "I do not mind."
Sarah slowly raised her head to look at me - and ran far from me and locked herself in one of the closets.
I was puzzled. Did she not like me?
"Stay away, monster!" Sarah cried out.
