Chapter Forty-Two
If you readers guessed that Caleb was the one who was dangling over the ledge, you would be right on the ball. And yes, his friend Cindy - his soon-to-be girlfriend - was the one arguing with her cousin. She was demanding her to safely release Caleb and questioning why she was using him.
This is the part where Slapi and I show up for a final battle against Diversity, however, I think that it would be fun and interesting if you read the argument between Cindy and Diversity. Oh, and Caleb will have some lines here and there.
"Help!" Caleb yelled. "Cindy! Anyone! Please...I...I get sick whenever I look down from such a height..."
One of Diversity's gremlins was controlling the camera. He made it zoom back out and captured his boss and her cousin fighting. Diversity was frustrated that Cindy was ruining her big moment and attempted to make her go away.
"Could you please leave and visit later? I am doing something important."
"How is videotaping yourself live and endangering my best friend important?" Cindy argued.
"I do not have the time to give you the story of what happened between me and Ada."
"Ada? What did you do to Ada?!"
"Nothing. Well, I did try to drain her of her strength and powers, but she and that crazy friend of hers managed to escape the castle."
"Why would you do that?! Ada is not a villain!"
Diversity tapped her cousin's nose. "Looks can be deceiving, my dear Cindy. From what it sounds like, Ada never admitted to you the truth that she knocked Caleb unconscious and brought him to my castle."
Cindy placed her hands on her waist. "Do you take me for a fool? I would know if she did a thing like that because Caleb would have told me way before now. Right, Caleb?"
Caleb was getting sicker and sicker by the second, and his face was getting greener and greener. He was on the verge of...you know what...and pressed his lips together so that he would not...you know.
What the girls did not know was that Caleb could not hear them. They were too far away from Diversity's castle, and knowing how much of a cinnamon roll he is, Caleb just assumed that they were getting along and having a friendly conversation between cousins.
It was difficult for him to keep his eyes off Cindy. After all, she was on the ground, and he was way above it. If he did not want to be sick and...you know what...he had to stop looking at the ground. However, he was unable to quit staring at Cindy. She had no idea about this, but he loved her. No, this was not some crush. This was true love. He loved her with all his being. Unfortunately, he did not believe that he was good enough because she had a perfect life. She had a mom and dad and was super rich.
What did poor Caleb have to offer? A boy who was wasting Cindy's time with therapy on how to deal with his anxiety and panic attacks? He felt useless and thought that he did not deserve her.
"Cindy. My love." A tear trickled down his cheek. "I am in love with you. But I wish that I was not. You deserve better. You need a young man who will provide for you and protect you from danger." He sniffed. "I am unable to protect you. I will not stand up to the threat and just force us into hiding. I love that you care about me and are helping me get over my anxiety. I am grateful that you came into my life. But the last thing that I want to do is to force you to do something that you absolutely have no interest in." He sighed. "Like me."
Meanwhile, Cindy and Diversity were fighting. I do not mean verbal this time. They were actually on each other and trying to see whose hair would look the worse.
It started when Cindy put a hand over the camera lens and pushed the camera back with all her might. The gremlin working the camera screeched as the camera rolled back. He reacted quickly and jumped on top of it. Diversity used her powers to halt the camera and roll it back to where it had been. As soon as she was through dealing with that, she slapped her cousin's face using the back of her hand. Cindy cried out and massaged the spot where it was hurting.
"You had no right to slap me!"
Diversity motioned to her gremlin and the camera. "You had no right to shove my camera! And my gremlin. The poor dear. You traumatized him."
"Bull! You could care less if he got injured. You do not love or care about any of your gremlins. As long as they do your dirty work, you will not murder them."
"You are exaggerating. I think of the gremlins as my babies."
"I think that the one that you almost burned to death would disagree."
Diversity decided that the time for talking was over - probably because she did not have any clever comebacks - because a blue ball of her power formed in the palm of her hand. She threw it at Cindy, but Cindy managed to dodge out of the way. The ball hit a tree instead.
"You are pathetic," Cindy said. "You know that?"
Diversity growled and tackled her to the grass. She gripped her arms, holding her down, and her eyes changed to blue. Her cousin struggled, but was unable to break free.
"I have always hated you. You know that?" Diversity said. "I gave you a chance to be like me, but you refused. And it is all because of that idiot Caleb!"
"I do not think that is the only reason why," I said. "You are a sad excuse for a villain."
