Chapter Three
Before I fill you in on the scarred moment, I should explain what happened beforehand.
So today was the beginning of another school week, and Silver and I entered the building. As we were strolling through the halls, I talked about and showed the walls, floors, and lockers to my sister. Unfortunately for me, she was giving me the cold shoulder. In fact, she had been giving me the cold shoulder all morning.
"And to your left - and your right - you will see orange lockers," I said. "There are purple and blue lockers in the other hallways."
I waited for a response from her, but knew that she would keep to herself, and I was correct.
Silver was holding her purple backpack by its straps. Mom and Dad bought it just for her. She did not have notebooks or writing utensils because the principal promised our parents that he would supply them. So she had to make a short visit to the office to pick up her new supplies.
It was painfully obvious that Silver was not happy to be at school. The same can be said about home. She is never happy, and I wondered why.
Did it have to do with what our mother mentioned last night? That I would grow suspicious.
Too late for that. I was already suspicious when Silver first started locking herself in her bedroom!
I was deciding how to strike a conversation with her, a conversation that she would not be able to resist, when I spotted my two best friends in the entire world.
"Lorraine! Joan!" I called to them.
Lorraine and Joan were in their lockers - not literally - and unpacking their bags. All three of our lockers are next to each other, and that only increased our amazing friendship.
Lorraine had darker skin and long, black hair. She was wearing a purple, sleeveless dress that touched her knees and purple flats. She was the first friend that I made and is pretty popular.
Joan is the opposite. She had pale skin and short, orange hair. She was wearing a yellow, short-sleeved shirt, green pants, and purple shoes. On her face were glasses and freckles. She was the second friend that I encountered and is a nerd.
No offense to the nerds. I love nerds!
"Samantha!" That is my full name.
Joan and Lorraine rushed towards me and hugged me. Man, they almost knocked me off my feet!
I giggled and hugged them back. "I hope that my best friends are doing well this morning."
They pulled away from me, and Lorraine said, "We were doing fine...until you did not show up."
I was confused. "But I did show up. I am here."
"And we are relieved," Joan commented. "This morning, I dialed your cell number. You did not pick up, so I dialed your home number. You never did answer."
"Really? I am sorry. I was busy."
Lorraine crossed her arms over her chest. "Busy with what, Sam?"
"Why, helping our new classmate - and your new friend - get ready for school." I motioned to my sister. "Lorraine. Joan. This is Silver."
Joan took off her glasses and cleaned them with the fabric of her shirt. "That is Silver? That is your sister?"
Lorraine snorted. "Heh. I never thought that I would see the day."
You see, I had told my friends about Silver. I described her and how she was shutting me out. This was a huge deal for them because this was the first time that they were seeing her in person. Yeah. Even she shut them out!
Joan put her glasses back on and held out her hand for my sister to shake. "It is nice to finally to meet you. Sam has told us a lot about you."
At first, Silver did not look at her or shake her hand. Then, she took a quick glance at her...and slapped her arm.
"Ow!" Joan instantly pulled back and hugged her poor arm.
"Hey!" Lorraine called my sister out on it. "That was not a kind thing to do."
I could not believe that Silver had done that and demanded to know why.
She did not say much. She just said, "I do not want to be friends with a couple of losers."
"They are far from losers," I defended. "Joan has the highest grades in all her classes, and Lorraine is the president of the junior club."
"I do not care!" she snapped at me. "I would rather befriend a group of man-eating wolves than them!"
By this point, I was fuming with anger and had every right to be. I told her that we were going to the principal's office and grasped her wrist. That was not the smartest idea because she jerked away and slapped me. Slapped my face. Hard.
I am not exaggerating when I say that the side of my face hurt like heck! I screamed bloody murder and covered my cheek that was now bright red.
You would think that Silver would regret what she did to me and apologize. I wish. Instead, she continued on giving me the cold shoulder and claimed that I had it coming.
"You deserve that slap, Sam. That and much more."
Being the gentle and wonderful person that she was, Lorraine comforted me and Joan and gave Silver a firm talk.
"You are crazy. How could you hurt people like that? Especially your own sister? I will tell on you to the principal if I have to."
"Go ahead. Like I give a crub."
With that, she turned around on her heels and stormed off in the direction where we came from.
My eyes were filled with tears. I wanted to cry, but not in front of Lorraine and Joan. I managed to hold back the tears and asked myself why.
Why was Silver doing this to me? What did I do to her that would cause her to hate me?
