Chapter Six

The ghost's voice echoed throughout as he made the claim. I did not want to believe it. I am the best driver in all of Forlot. I have never gotten into an accident, let alone run somebody over!

My first assumption was that Derek was either messing with me or mistaking the two figures with something else.

"You are joking," I managed to choke out, my hands trembling on the steering wheel. "I-I did not run my parents' car over anybody. I-I know it."

"Then why are you stammering and your hands shaking? It is obvious that you are not cold."

Finally finding the urge to move, I unbuckled my seatbelt and pushed open the car door. As I got on my feet, I realized that my legs were weak. I was weak.

Why was that? I could not have accidentally hit innocent people. I could not! I am extremely careful!

Calm down, Daniel. Calm down. Check out their pulses. They could be very much alive. Or they probably were not people at all. Maybe...maybe poles. Out in the middle of the road...

Who am I kidding?

I took in a deep breath and tiptoed to the other side of the car. As I did so, I heard Derek.

"Why are you tiptoeing? We are in the middle of nowhere! It is not like that you will be shot if you are not quiet enough."

"Are you not going to come out and help me investigate?" I called to him.

"Are you crazy? You ran two people over! If I come out and help, I will be known as your accomplice. I want nothing to do with this accident!"

"Duh. That is why it is called an accident. I did not deliberately target them."

"How can I believe you, Daniel?"

"Derek, please. This is no time to be funny with the readers."

"Whenever is it a good time?"

I was now on the other side and ran my palm and fingers along the back door. It did not take me long to spot the horrible scenes, and I covered my mouth to keep from gagging.

It was true. Derek was correct. I had accidentally hit a boy and young girl. They both were lying under the car and between the tires. Their eyes were shut, and the boy had blood on his face while the girl's forehead was covered with blood.

I slowly removed my hands from my mouth and muttered, "What have I done? I...I..."

"Did you find the bodies yet, Daniel?" Derek checked in.

I did not answer him and sank to my knees.

"Daniel?"

Derek opened his car door and stood. He was playing with the car keys with his fingers and uttered a gasp when he saw what I was seeing.

"Man, you are in so much trouble. Makes me glad that I am a ghost."

"Derek, you are not helping."

I leaned forward and placed two fingers on the boy's neck. I could not feel his pulse. I did the same to the girl. I could not feel her pulse either.

They unfortunately were dead. I had killed them.

"So?" Derek said. "What is the verdict? Are they alive?"

"No," I responded just above a whisper. "They...they are dead."

"As in...long gone?"

"Long gone, Derek. Long gone."

"Wow. I would hate to be you right now."

I reached into my pocket and pulled out my cell. I dialed 777 and brought the phone to my ear. "Hello?"

"Dude!" Derek hissed. "What are you doing?!"

"Calling the Forlot hospital. And I am praying that a few cops from the next town will come as well."

"Why?! Are you asking yourself to go to prison?"

"As bad as it is, Derek, I am not going to prison. It was an accident. Happens all the time with other people."

"But Daniel, this is the first time that you have hit - and killed - innocent people. If you ask me, that is pretty suspicious."

"It. Was. An. Accident. Shall I give you the full definition of the word?"

"I am sorry, Daniel. I know that you did not mean to. I am just preparing you for those idiot people that will not believe your story, like the families of the boy and girl."

I plopped my bottom onto the ground and chatted with a nurse that had answered my call. She informed me that help was on the way and to stay put. I had planned on staying put anyway, seeing that fleeing the scene of a crime is a federal offense.

I hung up and put my phone away. Derek sat next to me.

"What if you do go to jail?"

"I am not going to jail. I have loved ones who will defend my actions."

"I would defend you, but...I am dead."

I glanced at the dead bodies, and then at the car. Then back at the lifeless bodies. I went back and forth like that for about a minute - and a smile spread across my face.

"Daniel?" Derek spoke. "What is with the creepy smile?"

I scrambled to my feet, bent down, and grasped the shirts that the boy and girl were wearing. I dragged them out from underneath the car and to the grassy land where the abandoned buildings were lined up.

"Daniel. Daniel!" Derek shouted. "Do not do something that you will later regret!"

I did not stop what I was planning to do and let go of the shirts. The bodies dropped onto the grass.

I raced back to the car, hopped in, and opened the glove compartment. I pulled out a sharp object. A knife.

I scurried out and returned to the bodies. The hand that was holding the knife was quivering, and I did my hardest to not let go and accidentally stab my foot or another part of me.

When I was ready, I stabbed the soulless bodies. Stabbed and stabbed and stabbed.
