Chapter Forty-Two
Laila's eyes blinked rapidly, and her face looked as if she were taking what her older sister was saying to heart. Ariana put on a small smile and attempted to hug her. Her arms wrapped around Laila...and went through her. She was confused at first, but quickly remembered that her younger sister was dead. A ghost. Her smile turned upside down, and her eyebrows narrowed.
"If I could, I would slap you so hard that your brain would fall out of your skull, Laila."
"Oh, I am able to be solid whenever I wish, my dear Ariana. I just do not desire to be solid now. I do not need you touching me, and you need to see and understand the result of abandoning me."
"How is you being a ghost my fault? I did not tell you and your dimwitted boyfriend to get yourselves killed!"
"Gee, I would have not gone that direction if you were there for me like that sisters are supposed to do!"
"I had cancer! I could not be by your side because I was stuck at the hospital and getting all sorts of treatments!"
"I am not blaming you for having cancer, but it was not cancer's idea to abandon me for three stinkin' years!"
"Do you think that I was happy to keep my diagnosis a secret from you? No!"
"Then why did you not spill the beans?"
The argument got louder and louder and more intense by the second. I had to cover my ears and tried to come up with a plan to make them stop and forgive each other. I knew that Laila almost killed Ariana I do not remember how many times, but it was obvious to see that she was suffering on the inside. Her mind was twisted, and her heart was black and broken.
Thank gosh that Derek and Bridget came to the rescue. They floated to me, and Derek handed me one of those old tapes that people used to put in players.
Bridget eyed the fight and said, "Look at those two. I am placing my bets on Ariana."
Derek crossed his ghostly arms and gave the ghost girl one of his blank expressions. "Seriously? You are making bets on two girls who have had troubling lives?"
"Well, somebody has to make good things from bad situations. I am just turning the other cheek."
"You know that transforming bad things to good is part of God's department, right?"
"Excuse me," I spoke up in a whisper. "Derek. Bridget." I held up the tape. "What is this?"
"It is a tape that people used back in the old days," Bridget stated.
"I know what it is. I would like to know what is in it."
"Film. Duh."
"I know that there is film inside it. How dumb do you think that I am?"
"You are not dumb at all. I just assumed that you were one of those young folks who has no clue what a tape is."
"I may be young, but it does not mean that I am dumb. Why, my IQ is higher than most scientists."
She quirked a ghostly eyebrow. "Is that actually true? Or are you pulling my leg?"
Derek pulled me aside and informed me that what was on the tape could possibly heal Laila's poor heart and soul and restore her relationship with Ariana. I asked how we were going to get her to watch it, and he reassured me that he had the perfect plan.
A small television that was on one of those tables with wheels had been left on the stage by a teacher. The shelf below the television had a player. I bet that you readers can guess where this is leading. Derek and I had to sneak onto the stage and slip the tape into the player. It would have been simple to accomplish if not for the two bad ghosts in the gym!
"Say, why can you or Bridget not slither your way over there?" I questioned my ghost friend. "I know that you are not the strongest ghost and probably Bridget is not either, but you two have powers and can turn invisible."
"We could," he confessed. "But for the sake of our fans, we will do it the complex way and force you to complete the mission."
"What?! Why?!"
"You want to keep the fans entertained, now do ya, Daniel?"
I did not even get the chance to move because of Liam. He was floating right behind me and grabbed the back of my tuxedo and hoisted me in the air. He was pleased by his latest capture, and his ghostly eyes sparkled.
I kicked with my legs and thrashed my arms. Sadly, it was no use. He was a ghost and much more powerful than I was. I attempted to hide the tape under my tuxedo, but he took note and yanked the tape from my grasp. I ordered him to give it back, but he just smirked and laughed.
"Laila and I give the orders around here," Liam said. He brought his ghostly face to my ear and whispered, "Once your precious Ariana is gone for good, you and your classmates will be next."
My eyes grew wide. "W-what?" I stammered. "I do not understand. I thought that Laila only wanted Ariana to pay."
"She does and will be fed. However, one soul will not be enough."
"How can you two..." I swallowed hard. "...eat a soul when you are souls yourselves?"
"We are not your average ghosts, Daniel."
"I figured that you would say that."
"Oh, yeah? Then I bet that you did not figure that we are among the thousands of ghosts who feast on the living. We are known as the Antrugigs."
"The what?"
"The Antrugigs. An Antrugig is a ghost who eats souls belonging to the living. If they do not within a certain amount of hours, they will cease to exist."
