Chapter Forty-Three
My mind was not on my classmates. Not on my safety. Not even on my girlfriend. After what Liam told me what he and Laila truly were, I became concerned for Laila. If she did not chow down on a soul every so often, she would no longer exist. She would not die because she was already dead. She would be extinct, leaving Ariana without a sister.
Did Laila even consider that she would need to murder other people besides the sister who lied to her and eat their souls for eternity? Or could she not wait to torture and kill Ariana? Could she not see that what she was doing was wrong? Or was it too late to save her? Was the Laila that Ariana knew throughout her life gone for good? I have good news for you, my fellow readers. There was still some good in her.
I peered over Liam's shoulder and saw Laila. She was standing behind him, and tears were coming out of her eyes and running down her cheeks. She said her boyfriend's name in a weak voice, and Liam jumped a little and spun around. He dropped me, and I landed on my bottom and glared at him.
"Baby," Liam called her as he massaged the side of his neck. "You startled me. I had no clue that you were behind me. Speaking of which...how long have you been in this spot?"
Laila wiped all the tears off her face and sniffed. "Not long. I noticed that you were holding up Daniel and was going to politely ask you to release him. As I got closer to the two of you, I heard you explain to Daniel about who we are. Who...we really...are." She held his face in her hands. "Tell me that we are ghosts. We are ghosts, right?"
Being the wicked person that he was, Liam gently pried her hands off his face and lied to her. "We are real ghosts. Nothing more. Nothing less. And unlike the living, we will be in peace."
The ends of her mouth curved up. She was smiling. Then that smile turned upside down. She shoved him hard before punching him in the face, knocking him down. The tape slid out of his grasp and over to me. I scooped it up and climbed to my feet. I took Ariana's hand, and we dashed to the stage.
"Why is my sister turning on her boyfriend?" Ariana asked me.
"I think that she just discovered that he has been toying with her," I replied.
Liam was surprised that his girlfriend would hurt him and tried getting back up. "What did I ever do to you to be humiliated?"
"You are worried about being humiliated?" Laila questioned. "What about me?!" She got on top of him and wrapped her thumbs and fingers around his neck. "I was a fool for ever loving you."
"You are not a fool. I love you."
"You do not love me!" She tightened her grips on his throat. "You lied to me the day that we died and just a couple minutes ago. Do you remember the words, the exact words, that you said to me? 'Cause I do. They were along the lines of a promise that you made to me. If you and I became ghosts, we would put our lives here in the past and be together forever. After we killed my good-for-nothing sister, I would be at peace. We would be at peace."
"And we will have peace," he managed to choke out. "We will never suffer ever again."
"But the peace, the peace that you are referring to, comes with a price. Souls, innocent souls, must be eaten." She loosened her hold on his neck and pulled his head off the gym floor. "I told you from the beginning that I was not going to hurt bystanders other than my own sister. You did not like that, so you lied to me. I was too messed up to know the difference between the truth and a lie."
"Laila, you need to understand. I was only doing what was best—"
She interrupted. "People like you should not exist. How dare you believe that my life had no meaning!"
I slid the tape into the player, and Ariana tapped my shoulder. "What is it, Ariana?"
My girlfriend pointed a trembling finger at her sister and Liam. "Look, Daniel."
I snatched up the remote and watched as Laila slammed Liam's head on the floor and pulled a shiny object out of her pocket. It was a silver knife with a dark red handle. She aimed it at her boyfriend - I mean, her ex-boyfriend - and raised it above her head. But before she could stab him, Derek grabbed ahold of the knife and yanked it out of her hands.
"Nice work, Derek," I complimented.
Derek ordered me to press the green button on the remote. I did so, and the television switched on. Laila demanded to have the knife back, and then skidded to a stop when she spotted was playing. It was Ariana when she was going through her treatments. She was completely bald and in a hospital bed. She was also holding the video camera. This was the video that she made just for her younger sister if she indeed lost to cancer.
"Is this thing on?" Ariana in the video said. "Oh, it is on. There we go." She cleared her throat. "If you are watching this, Laila, it means that I passed away from brain cancer. There are some things that I wanted to tell you before I died, which is why this video exists. First off, I apologize for keeping my diagnosis a secret from you. I did it not because I do not care about you, but because I love you with every fiber of my being. I could not bare you to watch losing another loved one."
