Chapter Twenty
Students scrambled away from their lockers before my sister and I slammed into them. We uttered cries when Anthony slammed us into the lockers. He released our shirts, and Adalee and I fell in heaps on the floor.
A student whom we barely collided with landed on the floor too. He was on his stomach and grunted. Then he tilted his head to Anthony. "That was uncalled for. One of these days, you are going to harm someone. Possibly kill them. Do you want that, Anthony? Do you actually want that on your permanent record?"
"Shut up," Anthony growled. "And stay out of this, or I will flatten your hands into pancakes."
"Do that, and I will tell my parents."
"You would not dare."
"I will tell my parents, and you will be suspended. And if you break my hands - which you will - the police will throw you in jail. 'Cause that is where you belong."
Adalee and I hugged each other and watched in horror as Anthony lifted his foot and hovered it over the boy's hands.
"Ah!"
But before he could stomp on them, Anthony flew back and collided with the lockers. It was as if he were being controlled by strings. Like that he was a puppet. He let out a sharp cry when he hit the lockers and fell. He was now on his knees and holding his arm.
Adalee pulled away from me and said, "I hope that you are hurt, Anthony. I hope that you broke your arm and the rest of your bones because you broke my back!"
"Adalee. That is not nice," I said.
She looked at me. "He is not being nice."
"But that does not give us the right to wish harm on an individual, especially if the individual is innocent."
"He is not innocent, Allison. Not even close. He almost hurt that boy's hands and hurt our backs." She put her hand on her lower back. "I will be acting like an elderly person for a while. How about you?"
"What about me?"
"How is your back? Does it hurt?"
"Not much. And by the way, your back is not broken."
"What makes you such an expert?"
Still holding his arm, Anthony got up and turned to his friends. I assumed that they were his buddies. The boy and the two girls hurried over. The boy checked to see if Anthony was alright, and the girls grabbed Gabriel's arms. Gabriel did not even try to get free. It is like that he already knew his fate.
I put my prosthetic hand on a locker to support myself and climbed to my feet. I tested my prosthetic arm and leg. Thank gosh that they were not damaged. Mom and Dad would have been livid. People with common sense know how important prosthetic limbs are.
"What do you think that you are doing?" I choked out.
The girls looked at me. One of them said, "Did you not see what happened?"
"See what? What are you talking about?"
"Gabriel here pushed Anthony," the other girl claimed. "He pushed him against the lockers."
Gabriel looked at me. "They are right, Allison. I pushed him because I did not want him to hurt you or Adalee."
"You okay, man?" the boy asked Anthony. "Want some water?"
Anthony released his arm. "I do not need water, Gus. I am not a wuss like Gabriel or the prosthetic freak."
"Just stop it, Anthony," Gabriel told him. "I could care less if you call me names because I am aware that I am a freak."
"You acknowledge that you are a freak of nature?" Gus asked. "Did not see that coming."
Gabriel took a deep breath. "You call me all the names that you want and punch me as much as you wish. But you cross the line when you mess with a student with a disability."
Anthony tilted his head to the side. "Oh, yeah? So what will you do if I decided...oh, I do not know...to grab the prosthetic girl by her neck and choke her?"
Gabriel gave him a sickening glare. "I will kill you. Kill you in cold blood."
