Chapter One

"Here we are," I said to myself. "The moment that you have been waiting for."

My family and I just drove past the gates and into this small town. This eerie town. My sister and I peered out our windows, and I noticed right away that the sky was odd. It was not blue or even black. It was purple.

What kind of a town has a purple sky?

My younger sister, Adalee, thought the same thing and said, "Mom? Dad? Why is the sky purple?"

"What did she say?" Dad asked Mom.

"Sorry, sweetie," Mom apologized to Adalee. "Your dad and I did not catch what you said."

My sister balled her hands into tight fists and pouted. I laugh whenever she pouts. Her pouts are so funny and adorable! Unfortunately for me, she absolutely loathes when someone laughs at her. It is one of her many pet peeves.

As soon as Adalee made eye contact with me, I stopped laughing and picked up my book. I opened it and took my bookmark out. I had only read the first sentence on the page, when Adalee interrupted.

"I know what you were doing, Allison," she taunted. "I know that you were not reading your book."

I lowered my book and gazed at her. "Give me a break, Adalee. It is not my fault that your pouts are precious."

"Your sister has a point, Adalee," our mom said. "Your pouts are indeed precious."

As I expected, Adalee pouted again. I tried to not laugh again because I did not want to be scolded by her once again.

I wonder how many times I will say the word "again."

"My pouts are not precious!" Adalee exclaimed. "They are not cute! Nothing about me is cute!"

"Awe. Even your voice is cute," I said with a smirk.

"Stop treating me like a baby! I wish that you all would stop treating me like a baby!"

"We are not treating you like a baby," Dad jumped into the conversation. "We never treat you like a baby. Just because you are adorable does not mean that you are a baby."

She pointed at herself. "I cannot be adorable because I am cool." She then reached into her bag and pulled out her green sunglasses. Green is her favorite color.

"You do not have to wear sunglasses to be cool," I said.

Adalee stuck out her tongue at me. "You are just saying that because you do not want me to be cool."

"But you are even without those sunglasses."

She put them on. "Says the girl with a bionic arm and a bionic leg."

Although that I do not mind Adalee calling my fake leg and arm bionic, I wish that she would not say that. She assumes that because I have a prosthetic arm and leg, I have powers. But I do not blame her because she is too young to understand.

You readers may be wondering why I have a prosthetic arm and leg. Why else do you think? My actual leg and arm would have killed me. I would have died if not for the amazing doctors. The only reason that I have a fake arm and a fake leg is not because of Mom or Dad or my sister or my old classmates. It was all his fault.

All because of a drunk driver.

I bet that you have never expected a drunk driver to be mentioned in a children's book. But I am a child. I am older than Adalee, but I am still a child. A child whose life has changed forever because some idiot was drunk at the wheel. I thank God every day that I am still alive. I do not know what my family would do without me.

I teared up just thinking about the accident. I wrapped my prosthetic arm around my sister's shoulders.

"What are you doing?" she asked with a confused look.

"I am giving you a hug," I replied with a weak smile.

"This is not how you give a hug."

"I know, but I do not want to unbuckle my seatbelt."

"I do not want to unbuckle my seatbelt either, Allison, but you do not see me giving you a lame hug."

"Adalee, would you please stop giving your sister such a difficult time?" Mom asked. "She has been through a lot."

Mom was right about that. I have been through a ton. I practically lived in the hospital. I had to get used to not having an arm and a leg. I had to get around by using a wheelchair. I had to attend physical therapy. It was the worst year of my life.

To add insult to injury - literally - I was bullied left and right by my old classmates and the ones whom I called friends. They said that they could not be friends with a girl missing an arm and a leg. You have to be an actual scum to bully somebody because of an accident that he or she had no control over.

My life was ruined because of one individual. That just blows my mind.

Thankfully, the police caught the drunk driver. I think that he was sentenced to ten or fifteen years. So he will be free in about fifteen years or less. But I will remain the same. I will have my prosthetic arm and leg for the rest of my life.

Little did I know that my life was about to change - for the worse.

"We are here," Dad announced.

He slowed down the car and parked it in front of a nice house. It was bigger than our old one. The outside was painted white with a black roof.

Dad turned off the engine. "Well? How do you like our new house?"

"I love it," I said.

"I love it! I love it! I love it!" Adalee yelled. She tapped Dad's shoulder. "Dad?"

"Yes?"

"Why are the upstairs lights on?"
