Chapter Twenty-One
Trey pulled the car through a gate and up a large hill.
"That's..." she said pointing.
"So, you've heard of us..."
"Witch Hill," she finished with a gulp.
"Considering you're new in town that's pretty fast that they gave you all the lore."
"So, it's true with all the weird noises and lights and..." she said nervously.
He laughed again. "Not nervous are you?"
"They say those who come up here run away screaming."
He shrugged. "Do you see me screaming?"
"No."
"Ok, then," he pulled in front of the house. "I think you can handle it," he said getting out of the car. He leaned over the door to look at her. "It's okay."
She nodded and looked up at the house.
He closed the door and walked around the front of the car and opened the passenger door. "Forgot my manners," he said extending a hand to help her out.
"No, um..." she said her hands trembling as she tried to do the seat belt.
He squatted down, reached over her and unplugged her seat belt. "What are you scared about? The house? Your sisters? Me?"
"Maybe a little of everything," she said looking at the house. It looked like a nice house. Normal. Big but normal. Pretty even.
"The house, it's just sticks and brick."
"I know," She said nodding.
"Your sisters will love you no matter what. That's the type of people they are."
"Okay," Sarah said trying to force a smile.
"And me?" he said tilting his head. "I'm complicated. That can scare some people. But I don't want to scare you," he said a touched her cheek lightly with the back of his hand.
"You don't. I mean, not really," she said. He leaned in and kissed her gently on the lips. "Okay, maybe a lot," she said and he kissed her again.
"Shit! Trey!" a voice from above them yelled and Trey was pulled up by a tan arm.
"Hey, Ray, how's it going?" Trey asked with a smile.
"Sam, out," Ray said grabbing Sarah's arm and pulled her out of the car.
"Okay, let me just say. Are you nuts?! George is going to be out of his mind. Sam...I just don't have the words...You...," he said looking at Trey disgusted, "I've got plenty of words."
"Will you just hold your trap for just one second?!"
The good looking guy Trey identified as Ray crossed his arms and looked back and forth from the two of them with daggers in his eyes.
"This is not Sam," Trey said gesturing to Sarah.
"Of course that's Sam," Ray said gesturing to her. "Who is it then? Her twin sister?"
"Yes," Sarah said.
Ray's jaw dropped. Closed and then dropped again.
"You'll catch flies," Trey said pushing Ray's jaw up with his index finger. "Get her in my room; I don't want anyone else to see yet."
"Then you shouldn't be making out in broad daylight."
"Point taken, Trey. You know the passage?"
"I know a few. Come on, what's your name?" Ray asked looking her over.
"Sarah."
"Hi, Sarah. I'm Ray," he said shaking her hand as they walked.
"Why aren't you questioning him? Me?" she asked following him through a garden behind the garage.
"I've learned the more questions you ask the less you want to know," he said opening a door to a shed.
"Where are we going?"
"The house, grounds, they're full of secret passageways. Being "Witch Hill" you can understand why those living here may want an escape route," he said walking over to a shelf covered in tools.
"Use them often?" She asked.
"Hardly," he said turning a water spigot attached to a garden hose. The wall behind the shelf opened up. He pulled on the shelf and swung it open.
"Cool."
"Dark and dirty," He correct grabbing a flashlight off the shelf. "Enter, mi lady," he said gesturing with his hand.
"You're not a serial killer are you?" she asked peering into the dark tunnel.
"Would I tell you if I was?"
"I was hoping you'd be a nice serial killer."
"The only thing that I kill is bugs," he said stepping on a spider. "Don't tell, Emily, she'll give me a lecture for days," he said closing the shelf and then the wall closing them in. She grabbed his arm.
"And they wonder why we, in this house, hook up so quickly," he said putting an arm around her waist.
"Huh?"
"Extreme circumstances," he said as they walked down the dusty wooden floor.
"Is Trey hooked up with someone?" she asked just to be sure.
"Trey, is it? I guess he and Tony are the only ones left. Would have to be," He muttered to himself stepping onto a ladder that was in the ground.
"You're kidding me," she said looking down.
"It's not so bad," he said climbing down the ladder. "They're good guys."
"I meant the ladder leading into the dark pit," she called after him.
"Oh, that," he said with a chuckle and then she heard a thud. He pointed the flashlight up. "That's not bad either," he said and she saw it was only about ten feet down.
Sarah took a deep breath and climbed onto the ladder and climbed down. "So, you're taken?" she asked brushing her jeans off.
"Sorry," he said with a smile.
"What's Trey's story?" she asked following him down another hallway.
"Oh, no, he gets to tell you that," Ray said as they reached a short flight of stairs.
"You know my sister."
"Sam? No, not very well. She only came here about a month ago. And before that, we only met over Thanksgiving, at her and Jake's house," he said going down the steps.
"Who's Jake?"
"Sam's brother," he said matter-of-factly and turned, "Oh. You didn't know. Adopted brother. Not, uh, yours."
She nodded and followed him to another wall.
"Stay there a sec," he said pointing to where she was standing. He opened the wall by pressing on it lightly. He pulled it open and poked his head inside. "Be right back," he said setting the flashlight on the floor.
"Ray," she hissed at him but he disappeared.
Sarah wrapped her arms around herself. What had she gotten herself into? She demanded of herself. She turned quickly as Ray appeared. "All clear."
Sarah followed him out into a living room of sorts with a washer and dryer, a couch and a tv. He took her hand and led her through another room which was a bedroom with bookshelves everywhere and antique furniture that belonged in a museum. He led her down a hallway and to the left and opened the door.
Trey was lying on the bed.
"Shit," Ray muttered and closed the door. "Trey," he said walking over to the bed.
Trey lifted his eyes open.
"Sarah's here."
"Okay," Trey said and closed his eyes.
"Did you eat?" Ray demanded.
"We'll be fine, Ray."
"You sure?"
"Yes."
"You won't...you know."
"No."
"Okay," Ray said putting a hand on the doorknob. "You're not going to tell me what's going on?"
"Nope."
"Does Sam know?"
"No, and don't breathe a word."
"Does this have anything to do with Brian coming over tonight?"
"Oh, yeah," Trey said.
Ray shook his head. "That can't be good."
"Is it ever?"
"Hey, tell everyone not to come down here. I'm in a mood or something," Trey told him.
"You're always in a mood," Ray said with a smile and ducked out of the room.
"Sorry," Trey said pulling himself into a sitting position.
"No, it's ok. Look, if you need a nap. Go ahead, I mean, I can read a book or something, right?" she said walking over to his bookshelf to read the titles on their spines. She turned to him confused.
"Problem if you don't read Italian; isn't it?" he said with a smile. "I don't need a nap. I'm okay."
"Right."
"Come here."
"What?"
"Just come here," he said putting his hand out.
"What?" She asked taking it.
He pulled her to him and onto the bed. He pulled her in front of him to sit between his legs and wrapped his arms around her.
"Trey," she said and he kissed her cheek.
"I'm not going to try anything. Relax," he said kissing her cheek. He reached for the nightstand and picked up a remote control. He flipped a switch and the wall opened revealing a flat screen TV. He turned it on and handed her the remote.
"You guys are really into secret hiding places aren't you?"
He shrugged and adjusted the pillow behind his head and closed his eyes.
There was a knock on his door.
"Go away!" he called.
"It's me," was a voice from behind the door.
"Yeah, okay," Trey said.
"I heard you..." another gorgeous specimen of the Italian male species said coming in and then stopped and stared at them wrapped in each others arms. "Trey," Tony said annoyed with a sigh and walked out.
"Excuse me, beautiful," Trey said kissing her cheek and got off the bed and went after him.
"What?" Tony said coming back in while Trey pushed him from behind.
"Look at her."
"I'm looking. Sam, this is not good. Do you have any idea how upset George will...did you do something to your hair?"
"She's not Sam," Trey told him with an amused smile.
"Of course she ...no, your not," he said looking her over. "Who is this? What have you done now?" Tony asked turning to him.
"Thanks for the vote of confidence," Trey said sitting on the bed next to Sarah. "This is Sarah, Sam's twin. Sam doesn't know about her yet; Brian's going to tell everyone what's going on tonight."
Tony sighed, "Okay then...I heard that Brian's coming," Tony said with a nod. "Be good," he said pointing at him.
"Always am," Trey said with a smile.
Trey closed the door after him and joined Sarah back on the bed. "You okay?" he asked pulling her back into her arms.
"Yeah. I think so," she said cuddling into his chest. "Your friends seem nice."
"That was my father."
"Oh," Sarah said staring at the door. He hadn't been kidding when he said Tony looked his age.
Trey laughed. "Wait until you meet my daughter."
"I'm not sure I'm ready for that," she said touching her forehead.
"You're ready," He said kissing her cheek."Oh, shit." He said getting up quickly.
"What?"
"I'll be right back. Stay here," he said kissing her cheek.
"What?"
"I have to talk to Emily."
"Why?! Trey!" she said as he rushed to the door.
"She's picked up that you're here and knows who you are."
Trey didn't bother knocking. He found her curled up on the bed.
"Em?" He said putting a hand on her shoulder.
"You should have told me," she said through tears.
"I know."
"Brian should have told me. My parents should have told me."
"They were trying to protect you. All of you."
"By keeping us apart?!" she asked whirling around. She had tears streaming down her face.
"You three have so much power. Together as babies, Em? You were not in control of those powers. Can you imagine the fireworks that would have been in that house? Your parents realized it right away. I'm sure scary stuff happened for them to decide they had to give their kids up. And everyone on the dark side that was watching you already? They were waiting to pounce any second. They weren't going to chance them getting all three of you together."
"So they split us up? They took us away from each other?"
"I know how you feel, Emily."
"No, you don't."
"Yes, I do. You know I do. You have to be strong, Em. Sam and Sarah they need you now. We all need you. You can be mad later."
"Why doesn't he come?"
Trey looked up at the ceiling and put his psychic feelers up,"he's hurting too. He'll be here when he pulls himself together."
She nodded and wiped her tears.
"There you go," he said stroking her hair out of her face.
"I better get cleaned up."
"Take your time."
"Thank you, Trey," she said hugging him.
"Hey, it was Brian's idea."
"I'm not ready to thank him yet," she said getting off the bed.
