Chapter Thirteen
"How are you feeling?" Brian asked him in his mind later that night.
Trey looked up at the ceiling.
"I hate when you do that," he sent Brian back the thought telekinetically.
"Same goes."
Trey sighed. "I'm okay. Back to my old self I think."
"Thanks for what you did. Saving her."
Trey shrugged. "Would have done the same for anyone."
"I know. You're a good kid, Trey."
Trey laughed. "I'm a lot older than you. Hardly a kid. And certainly not good."
"But you are. You're trying to help my family and I appreciate it."
"My family caused all this. Besides...it's my family too."
"It's time to find Sarah."
"I don't think so."
"Trey."
"No! No one else should be involved."
"We agreed."
"You'd let him hurt another one?" Trey demanded getting up.
"You think I want to put her in danger?"
"There's got to be another way."
"There's no other way. They need to be together. They're stronger together."
"I don't know why you all won't let me handle this myself. He's my uncle."
"You're not strong enough alone, Trey. Even with me and Emily. He's too strong. The only way..."
"I know!" Trey said holding his hand up. He ran his hand through his hair in frustration. "Is she ready?"
"No. But Emily will make her be."
"How are you going to explain this to her? To any of them?"
"I don't know. It's going to hurt me just as much as them."
"Doubt that."
"Let's not have this conversation again. Find her. Bring her home."
"Sure. Why not? Like I don't have enough women to worry about," Trey said walking out the bedroom door and slammed it behind him.
He watched her from a distance. Her long blonde hair bounced behind her as she walked down the street oblivious to the fact that her life was in mortal danger.
He would have known her anywhere. Her pixie face, her small nose, her sensual lips. He had known they were twins but didn't realize that they looked exactly the same. Sweet like her sister, she stopped to pet a small dog that was tied to a bicycle rack. A smile formed her lips as she petted the creature. Trey crossed his arms and leaned against the building wall to watch her. Maybe his premonition hadn't been of Sam. Maybe it was of Sarah. He had thought her hair was longer than Sam's and it was...
She looked up as if she felt him watching. He stayed still against the shadow on the building knowing it was his friend as he blended his body into its darkness. She continued to look around as she got up. She tucked a length of hair behind her ear and moved forward to walk down the sidewalk.
Trey followed her quietly blending into his surroundings. She seemed to sense him anyway and he was impressed by this. Not many could sense a vamp. She had to be more powerful than he thought.
"Oh, puppy!" Sarah Curtis exclaimed reaching her front stoop of the apartment building she rented. She leaned down and petted the black bundle of a few months old Labrador pup. The puppy licked her hand and she giggled. "And who do you belong to?" she said picking him up and cuddled her face up to his soft fur. "No collar." she murmured scratching the back of his neck. The puppy whined. "Are you abandoned, little one? Are you hungry?" she asked tucking him under her arm as she searched her pocket for her key.
"I'll get you something to eat," she said letting them into the building. She murmured sweet nothings to him as she climbed the stairs, opened her apartment door and set him down on her hardwood floor.
"Hey!" she called after him as the puppy ran through her apartment and into her bedroom.
Trey buried his body under the pillow that smelled incredibly like her. Darkness. Why must humans stay outside all day? He hoped he could hold his form as long as he needed to determine if this really was a good idea.
"What are you doing, you silly, dog?!" he heard her voice and the blankets above him began to shift as she searched for him. Sunlight hit his eyes and he blinked and unconsciously whined. She frowned as she looked down at him and then at the window.
"Do you not like the sunlight?" she asked him. Trey stretched out his paws and laid down lowering his head.
She crossed the room and closed the curtains bringing the room into sweet darkness. Trey laid down on the bed and looked up to her. Thankfully.
"You poor thing," she said scratching his head. "You must be dehydrated being out in the sun all day. Come on to the kitchen I'll get you some water," she said getting off the bed. She looked down to him when he didn't move.
Water was not what he craved.
"Come on, baby," she said picking up the puppy and walked him into the kitchen. She set him down on the linoleum floor and reached into a cabinet for a bowl. She moved over to the kitchen sink and ran the cold water for a minute watching the puppy lie on the floor and put its paws to his head. She smiled and put the bowl under the running water. She set the bowl down next to the puppy. He looked at it and set his head back down.
"Come on, little one, you need to drink. You'll feel better."
Trey doubted it. He got up and made an obligatory lick at the water and laid back down next to the bowl. This had to be the most degrading thing he'd ever done. She sighed, patted him on the head and walked out of the room.
Later, the doorbell rang and Trey barked alerting Sarah who, had to his amusement, had for the past hour been trying to get him to play fetch. He wouldn't do it. For any woman. She sighed and got up moving to the door. Protectively, he followed her ready to pounce if need be.
"Oh, how cute!" the brunette exclaimed squatting down to pet his head.
Trey barked, that was what dog's did, right?
"Oh, be quiet," Sarah said closing the door as her obvious friend came in carrying a grocery bag.
"So, I got the puppy chow. Are you seriously going to keep him?" she asked setting the bag at the kitchen counter.
Trey eyed the bag suspiciously. Puppy chow?
"I'd love to. I think I should take him to the vet though."
Trey's ears perked up and looked at her anxiously. The vet?!
Her friend laughed. "He knows that word!"
"Well, if you don't want to go, you better drink your water and eat your food, and play with that ball." Sarah scolded him.
Trey walked quietly over to the bowl and took a few laps of water.
"What a smart dog! Wow! It's like he totally understood you!" her friend exclaimed.
Oops, Trey thought and laid down next to the bowl to watch them.
"We're kindred spirits, I think, aren't we little one?" Sarah asked picking him up to cuddle against him.
"Have you picked a name yet?"
"No. Sadly, he hasn't liked any I've picked."
"Don't be ridiculous, Sarah, he's a dog. Pick something. He'll learn to respond to it."
"Oh, no. He has to like it."
"How can you tell if he likes it or not?" her friend asked.
"What do you think of Rover?" she asked Trey.
Trey growled. Her friend laughed. "Midnight?" Sarah asked. He growled again. "That's not nice." Sarah said tapping him on the nose with a finger.
Trey jumped out of her arms and onto the floor. He walked lazily into the living room and hopped up onto the sofa and laid down.
"Down, down," Sarah said following him. Trey whined. "I'll not have you getting your hair all over the couch! Down!"
Trey barked and then jumped off the couch. He wanted her to like him not be upset but he didn't want to spend the night on the floor either. He walked down the hallway and he felt her following him. He was a naughty dog, he thought chuckling to himself. He jumped up onto the bed and nuzzled his face under the pillow until he buried himself in her covers. He'd make himself at home in her bed. One way or another.
"Trey, down!" Sarah yelled.
Trey came out of the covers and walked over to her at the end of the bed. He licked her hand. Well, I'll be damned, he thought to himself.
"Trey, huh? I don't know where that came from but okay," Sarah said picking him up.
Trey licked her face. Hell, it wasn't so bad being a dog.
There were advantages to being a dog, Trey thought as he watched Sarah get undressed and then dressed for bed.
She a few times glanced over at him. Seemingly embarrassed, she shook her head and continued dressing but she had turned her back to him.
Yes, she was powerful. She just didn't know it, Trey thought, jumping up on the bed as she settled down into the bed.
"Trey," she said in a tone he'd unfortunately heard too many times from women.
He walked away from her at the head of the pillow and laid down by her feet."Oh, alright. Just for tonight," she said settling back down.
He'd heard that just as often as well.
"Night, Trey," she murmured.
"Night, Sarah," he thought.
She sat up straight. She turned on the light. And looked down at him. Trey looked up at her innocently. Had she heard him?!
"Can you understand me?" she asked him.
Trey looked away and closed his eyes pretending to go to sleep.
"I sometimes think...that maybe...maybe animals can hear me. Talk to me. Is that silly?" she asked flipping over onto her stomach in the opposite direction on the bed to look at him.
He felt her watching him. He used his power to block her from reading his mind.
"I somehow get the feeling that you do hear me. You do understand me, completely," she said petting his head. "I know it's ridiculous. But how else would I know your name. Trey," she said stopping petting him. "What an unusual name. I wouldn't have thought it. Especially for a dog," she said starting to pet his head again. "Strange things have been happening to me lately. Oh, they've happened before. But not like this. Not like this, Trey. It's like since I moved here... all of a sudden..." She trailed off looking away. Trey looked up to look at her.
"Oh, it's just so silly," she said with a half laugh. She smiled down at him. She kissed the top of his head enthusiastically. "Good night."
Trey watched her settle back down and go to sleep. No, not silly at all, he thought.
