Chapter Ten

Trey walked in the woods alone. "Damn it!" he yelled throwing out his hand. Several trees fell over. He sat down on a long dead and fallen tree and put his head to his hands.

"Girl trouble?" a voice came out of the darkness.

Trey stood up. "You had no right to kill Max!"

"Oh, I had every right. As I have every right to kill you right now, if I so choose," Salvatore said coming out of the darkness.

"So do it already!" Trey told him looking into his black souless eyes.

Salvatore laughed. "What would be the point? Max needed to be taught a lesson. In a hard way. You, you're just a boy. A mere swat will do."

Trey chuckled. "So what's my punishment?"

"I haven't decided yet," Salvatore said leaning against a tree and crossed his legs nonchalantly.

"Why all the games, Sal? Why not just kill us all?"

"Again, what would be the point? It's more fun to...play."

"Just leave them alone, uncle. Enough is enough."

"I will decide when enough is enough," Sal said angrily tossing Trey up in the air and slammed him into a tree.

Trey pulled himself up slowly and took a deep breath to calm himself before he did something stupid. "What'd they ever do to you?" Trey asked brushing himself off. "Emily isn't my mother. She is dead. The other kids certainly have nothing to do with you. And Antonio? Well, get over it. What's done is done. He made a mistake. He didn't take us away when you tried to warn him and we got sick. She died. It happens."

"Get over it?!" Salvatore yelled, "He killed her! And he killed my parents!"

"Bullshit! The plague killed them," Trey exclaimed.

"They wouldn't have gotten sick and died if it wasn't for him!" Sal said walking up to him angrily.

"You don't know that. Besides, even if we had left we all would have died at some point. Everyone dies."

"No! That is the beauty of our power, Trey. And being vampires...there's no stopping..."

"I'm not listening to this..." Trey said walking away.

"Don't try to stop me, Trey. I don't like you that much!" Sal called after him.

"Yeah, love you too, Uncle Sal," Trey told him in his mind as he walked through the woods.

"Don't get in my way, boy. You've been warned," Sal told him back in his mind. "You know my plan is to slowly destroy Antonio. To break his heart slowly and painfully as he did mine. As he did Eliana's. I will slowly torture and kill everyone he has ever cared about even if it were but for a second. And I won't hesitate to include you and your precious daughter in that if you cross me."

"So, I had a visitor," Trey said coming into Emily's room. "Oh...sorry." he said as Emily pulled her nightgown over her head.

"You could try knocking," she said grabbing her robe.

"What would be the fun in that?" he grinned and sat down easily on the couch. "No wonder Tony dated you," he said looking her up and down. "Nice."

Emily threw a pillow at him. "Pervert," she watched him as he turned over the pillow in his hands staring at it thoughtfully. He looked worried. He looked depressed. "Salvatore?" she asked. He nodded tossing the pillow onto the couch. "What did he want?"

"Nothing really. Just to have someone to rant to. Toss around a bit."

"Are you hurt?" Emily said rushing over to him and touched his arm.

"No, I'm fine."

"He really didn't want anything?"

"He told me not to try and stop him."

"Stop him doing what?"

"I don't know. He doesn't trust me enough to tell me. You and Isabella won't let me go back to him...That's the only way he would ever buy that I'm on his side; if I went back, got back into it."

"What does Isabella know about him?"

"She knows he's bad news. That's enough for her to know."

"She doesn't know he's her great uncle?"

"No, and I'd like to keep it that way. She just knows he sired Max, that's all."

"So, how much should we be worried?"

"I don't know. He doesn't seem to want to hurt anyone at the moment. He seemed in a pretty decent mood actually for Sal. Maybe killing Max satisfied his temper for awhile."

"At least it'll buy us some ti-"

There was a blood curling scream. They jumped out of their seats and ran down the steps.

"What happened?" Emily asked pushing past Jake who was running down the stairs.

"Oh, God! Sam!" Jake cried pushing past Emily and jumped the last few steps.

Sam lay lifeless at the bottom of the steps in a pool of blood. "Sam!" Jake yelled turning her over. Blood poured from her forehead.

Trey paled. He froze staring at the lifeless body at the bottom of the stairs.

"Let me," Emily said stepping next to Jake and leaned over and started to put out her hands.

"Em, no!" Trey yelled startling her enough to pull her hands back. " Don't touch her!" Trey yelled forcing himself out of his dazed state. He pushed Emily back and then pushed Jake away.

"Get away from her!" Jake said grabbing his shoulder crying. "Let Emily help! She can heal her!"

Trey ignored him, he held one hand out to hold Jake back which took no effort with his vampire strength and put the other hand over Sam's head. "What are you doing?" Jake demanded pushing against him.

"What's going... Sam!" George said running in from the backyard.

"Back off! All of you!" Trey growled. Trey's hand began to glow.

"Jesus!" George said.

"Trey, what the hell?" Jake muttered as they watch his hand continue to grow brighter over Sam.

Sam groaned and stirred. "Lie still." Trey told her keeping his hand on her head.

"What's going on?" she muttered rubbing her eyes as if she had just woken up.

"I'm so sorry, Sam," Trey said stroking her head with his other hand. "It's all my fault."

"It wasn't you. I was pushed. Something pushed me," she said quietly.

"I know."

"What?! Who pushed her?" Jake demanded.

"Who do you think?!" Trey demanded spinning around to look at him.

"You better tell me, Trey. That's my sister. He could have killed her. And what the hell is with your hand?"

"He's healing her," Emily said in almost a whisper.

"He's what?"

"He knew I'd use it. To help her," Trey said more to himself than anyone as he pulled Sam up from under her arm to a sitting position.

"Thank you." Sam said touching her head lightly.

"You're welcome," he said picking her up. He walked her into the family room and set her down lightly on the couch.

"What the hell is going on, Trey? And don't tell me nothing!" Jake said angrily following him in.

"It has nothing to do with you."

"It has everything to do with me when someone pushes my sister down the stairs!"

"It wasn't about her. It was about me."

"In what way?" George asked.

Trey sighed. He watched Sam's pale face slowly regain color. She squeezed his hand. He didn't realize he was holding it. He pulled away and paced the room. "Look, I don't...use my powers. I don't go around advertising I have them and frankly I'd like to keep it that way."

"It's not about advertising you have them. What's wrong with using them?" George asked sitting down on the couch next to Sam and took her hand.

"You all know what it's like. To be different. I never wanted to be."

"So you don't mind being a vampire but you mind having powers?" Jake asked.

"Yeah, I do, ok?! I never asked for powers. At least when I became a vampire there was...a choice."

"We didn't ask for it either," George answered. "Why not use what you've been given?"

"Because they..." Trey trailed off and looked away.

"What?" Jake demanded.

"They used to use me," he said quietly

"Use you?"

"I was twelve when...things starting happening to me...for me. It was a game at first... Massi and...well, they encouraged me. Taught me to use my power. Control it. Then when I learned..."

"What?" Jake asked.

Trey frowned, "Let's just say I did things I'm not too proud of now."

"You were just a kid. You didn't know any better."

"Yeah, I did. But it didn't matter. I liked it. I liked the power. And when I died and they offered me life again. Power beyond even what I already had...you have no idea of what I was...what I became..."

"All that doesn't matter now," Emily said taking his hand.

"One day...I don't know...it was like I woke up from a bad dream. I looked at Isabella's sweet face and...god, it hit me. I was evil. How could I do that to my little girl?"

"It's not your fault."

"No? You talk about free will. The paths we choose for ourselves. My paths...well, they were all the wrong ones and they have led me to damnation."

"No, they didn't. They led you to us," Sam said.

He smiled lightly. "I appreciate that. But, no, I would have been better off dying. You all would have been."

"Did you have anything to do with..." Jake started.

"No. I didn't kill your parents. But I didn't stop it. I knew about it. I might as well have. I didn't stop it. I'm sorry," Trey said looking from Jake then to Emily. "You just weren't a concern then," he sighed. "That sounds harsh. I just got to know you, understand? Maybe you don't," he said shaking his head at their hurt expressions. "I'm a vampire and vampires don't normally give a damn how humans feel. I do give a damn. About you. Now," he said looking around at them

"Why kill our parents? What did Massi and whoever else it is have to gain from it?" Jake asked.

"The reason was, in theory, to cause pain to Tony. They were friends. That's why all of you have suffered and will continue to suffer. You're just pawns in his game."

"So this is all directed at Tony."

"Haven't you figured that out by now?"

Jake shrugged. "So how do we stop it?"

"You don't."

"He has to be stopped."

"I didn't say he wouldn't be."

"How do we stop him?"

"Again, you don't."

"Trey," Emily said warningly.

"It's not for you to stop. I have to."

"No, you don't. Not alone," Jake told him.

"I'm not bringing you all into this!" Trey said angrily.

"We're already in it! Look what he did to my sister! I'm not going to let something like that happen again," Jake said pointing at Sam.

"What are you going to do, Jake, premonition him to death?"

"Funny."

"Look, you guys, we're not going to solve anything by fighting," George said.

"Yeah, we..." Trey started but broke off falling flat to the ground.

Emily rushed to him. "Trey!" she said shaking him. He didn't move.

"What's wrong with him?" Sam cried getting up quickly and joined Emily by his side.

Emily put her hand to his head and then pulled it quickly away. "He..." she said rubbing her hand on the floor.

"What is it?" Jake asked kneeling next to her and touched her shoulder lightly.

"You know how I get when I heal someone?"

"Yeah."

"Sam would have died from that fall. And if I had healed her..."

"You would have," Jake finished looking at Trey. "But he did it. Trey healed her."

"He's going to die?" Sam cried leaning over his body and hugged him. "He's dying to save me?"

"I don't know," Emily said taking his hand. "But I can't cure a vampire! It'd kill me. And even if I could what he took from Sam would pass to me..." she started crying.

"He'd understand," Jake told her touching her shoulder and stared at Trey at shock.

"He's not breathing!" Sam cried.

"He's a vampire, Sam," Jake said. "He doesn't breathe."

"But he does. I see him breathe all the time," she said crying.

"It's just for show. So humans won't notice. When they're sleeping...they... don't," Emily explained wiping her own tears away.

"So, is he unconscious or dead?" George asked joining them on the floor. "How can you tell?"

"Right now, he's just unconscious," Emily said touching his forehead. "I can tell. No normal person would be able to. I just...I can't look too deep at what's going..."

"What the hell..." Tony said running in. "Demetrio," he said dropping to his knees. "No!"

"He's okay," Emily told him gently. "For now.

"What happened?" he asked putting his hands to his son's face.

"He saved my life," Sam cried tears streaming down her face.

"What's wrong with him?" Tony asked touching Trey's chest.

"He has powers, Tony, like me. He can heal and when he does..."

"Sam would have died," Jake said.

Tony looked at Jake and back to Emily. "But he's...a vampire. He can't die. Not without a stake or the sun..."

"I don't know, Tony. This looks bad," Jake said running a hand over his face.

"Have you ever heard of this? A vampire with magical powers?" Emily asked him.

Tony shook his head. "Never. What do you mean powers? How'd he get powers?"

"He said he got them when he was twelve."

"I don't have powers how can he..."

"Eliana?" Emily asked.

Tony shook his head. "No."

"Maybe it skipped a generation," George said.

"My parents didn't...the DeMarcos...I doubt it. I can't see them..."

"Well, someone did."

Trey gasped. They all turned to him. He coughed and pulled himself up with their help. "Great Grandpa DeMarco," he said under his breath.

"Your mom's grandpa?" Tony asked touching his head lightly.

"Yeah," Trey said and then swatted away several concerned hands. "I'm fine. I'm a vampire, I can't die, you imbeciles. Stop touching me! It can knock me out for awhile. That's all. For Christ sakes! I'm not a baby I can walk!"

"Thanks for telling us."

"Just did," Trey said pulling himself to prop himself up against the bottom of the couch.

"What happened?" Tony asked.

"Sam fell down the stairs," Trey said pulling himself onto the couch. George grabbed him from under the arms and helped him. "Hands," he snapped. He looked up at the worried faces. He sighed. "Sorry. Thank you. I'm fine."

"I didn't fall. Someone pushed me," Sam said.

"Don't talk to him about it," Trey told her in her mind.

Sam looked at him.

"Pushed? Who pushed you?" Tony demanded.

"I don't know," Sam said quietly.

"Trey, if you know something..." Tony said.

"Let him be," Emily said grabbing Tony's arm. "He needs some rest."

"We will talk about this later," Tony told him as Trey pulled his legs onto the couch and laid back.

"Do you need some blood?" Sam asked from her place on the arm of the couch. She touched his head lightly.

"Yeah. But not from you. I took enough ..." he trailed off as everyone stared at him. "Give the girl a break. Like you all don't give to Antonio and Isabella."

"Everyone's tapped out. I'll get you some stored," Tony said.

"I need fresh... human...to heal properly or I'm going to be real... weak for quite a long time. Then I'll be no use to you."

"Here," George said putting his arm out to Trey's face.

"You're kidding, right?"

"I don't have to watch," George said covering his eyes with his hand.

"You don't have to. Thanks, though," Trey said pushing his arm away but already he was fighting the urge to rip George's arm to shreds.

"No, it's ok."

"George, you sure?" Tony asked in shock.

"Yeah, it's okay. What you did for Sam...no one can repay you for that. Let me do this," George said to Trey.

"George," Sam said tearing up.

"I'll need you to pull me away. I feel really weak," he said looking over at Tony. "Hold me back. Please hold me back," Trey said so quietly only another vampire could hear.

"Yeah," Tony said walking over to the couch pushing Sam gently out of the way

Trey turned to George. "It'll hurt. I can't control it when I'm like this," Trey said taking George's hand and turned his wrist upward.

"Come on, everyone out. Give them some privacy," Emily said shooing them out.

"Hold my hand," Sam said sitting down on the couch by Trey's legs and took George's other hand.

"You don't have to stay," George said.

"I want to."

"You ready?" Trey asked.

"As ready as I'll ever be," George said with a swallow.
