Chapter Four
Sam watched the blonde woman walk through the garden examining the flowers. She didn't talk to Sam and Sam didn't talk to her. But they watched each other.
"How are you?" Emily asked sitting down on the park bench under a tree next to her.
"Fine. That a relative of yours?" Sam said nodding towards the woman.
"I can't see the dead. Not yet anyway. You see someone?"
"A pretty woman. Blonde. She looks a lot like you. She keeps looking at all the flowers. Examining them."
"It's probably my grandmother. This is her garden. Can you ask her what her name is?"
"You want me to communicate with her?"
"Why not?"
"I don't...I mean...I've never done it for anyone before."
"Would you?"
Sam nodded. She got up and walked over to the woman. The woman looked up from the rose she was looking at to look at Sam. She looked surprised at first but then smiled. "What is your name?" Sam asked her.
"Savannah. I'm Emily's grandmother. Would you tell her that I'm here? I'm always here with her. And that I love her. And that she's doing a wonderful job in keeping my garden up."
Sam repeated this to Emily. Emily walked over to them. She held out her hand and touched the air. She felt her grandmother's presence. "Ask her why she's here," Emily said putting her hand down.
"Oh, I heard her," Savannah said slightly annoyed she had to have a mediator between them. "Can't I come for a visit?"
Sam translated and Emily laughed and wiped away some tears. "The garden's yours, grandma," she said and walked away.
"She needs your strength, Samantha. She pretends she doesn't need anyone but she does."
"She's the strongest person I know," Sam said confused.
"She takes her role as a Guardian very seriously. Too seriously. I don't blame her for it after all she's been through. But I wish sometimes she could just enjoy being a regular teenager."
"We're not regular teenagers."
She smiled lightly. "You're special. Always remember that, child. And remind her of that. She needs to hear it just as much as you do."
They sat in the family room. Raven and Trey sat on opposite sides of the room; Raven sat in the window seat and Trey on the floor next to Isabella. Tony sat on the couch next to Ray and George looking between Raven and Trey trying to figure out what was going on between them. Jake sat in an armchair across from them. Sam entered the room and sat on the floor next to George.
"Hey, what's going on?" Sam asked.
"House meeting," George answered.
"Yeah, I got the invitation," Sam said pulling a folded up white index card out of her pocket.
"Emily. Everybody else just bangs down your bedroom door," George said with a grin.
Emily came into the room and shut the door. "You expecting someone to overhear?" Tony asked her watching her curiously. Emily silenced him with a look. She put her hands to the door.
"What's she doing?" Sam asked watching Emily as well.
"Putting on a protection spell," Jake answered softly in her ear.
"You sure you want to put the protections on this side of the door?" Trey asked her with a grin.
"Yes," Emily told him stepping over his outstretched legs.
"What's going on, Em?" George asked.
"I need to talk to all of you."
"No kidding," Jake said chuckle.
"I need you all to understand that...what's going on in this house is not always under our control."
"Say that again?" Jake said sitting up.
"I first suspected it when George and Ray started fighting."
"Suspected what? George is just upset about me and Isabella," Ray said.
"But why?" Emily asked looking at George.
George frowned. "Do we have to go through this again?" he asked as he contemplated her question
"Then I started seeing Jake and Raven," Emily said looking from one to the other.
"He bosses me around," Raven said from the back of the room.
"You're my sister I have to," Jake answered with a grin.
"And Tony and Jake."
"He's just annoying," Tony told her.
"Look who's talking, Count Dracula," Jake shot back.
"And Demetrio and Tony."
Trey looked up surprised. "Why bring me into this?"
"You're a part of this. Like it or not."
"Trey and I are fine," Tony said firmly.
"You were fine in Italy. Here, have you two spoken more than a few mutters of acknowledgement that the other is in the room?"
Tony looked at Trey and shrugged. "We're getting used to having each other around."
"You haven't seen your son in nearly five hundred years and suddenly you're so used to having him around that you don't acknowledge that he's even here? That he needs you? That you two need to catch up on the years you've lost?"
"I know what was lost! You don't need to remind me!" Tony snapped.
"I think I do."
"You're so high and mighty, what about you? You think everyone likes being bossed around by you, Ms. Guardian of the Universe?" Trey demanded.
"I'm only looking out for everyone, Trey."
"Sure," he said sarcastically. "Whether they like it or not."
Emily ignored him. "Now, I could go into specific circumstances but I'm sure most of you wouldn't want them brought up in front of the whole group. But the point of this is that there is someone or something out there that is making us...not be nice to each other."
Trey laughed. "She didn't just say 'something's making us not be nice to each other' did she?" he asked laughing and leaned over Tony. Tony smiled and patted his son on his shoulder.
"So glad you think it's funny. How about there's an evil being taking over your minds and your bodies making you do things you wouldn't normally do."
"Oh, that's so much better," Jake said sarcastically getting up and walked over to her.
"I think we all need to be more...observant about each other and about ourselves about what we say and what we do that is not normal."
"There's that normal word again," Sam said rolling her eyes.
"Sam, I understand that your normal conception of normal has been different than ours. But we need you to understand that this is not normal for us."
"And here I thought the meeting was about what soap to put in the dishwasher. Glad I didn't miss this," Trey said with a smile.
"We need to tell each other what we are feeling."
"You want to know how I feel?!" Trey yelled getting up, "I feel sick and tired of you telling me what to do! That's how I feel!"
"Sit down," she told him firmly. He stepped in front of her their bodies touching. He stared into her eyes.
"Knock it off, Trey," Jake said in warning.
"She can handle herself. Can't you, sweetheart?" Trey said viciously, his mouth twisting into a snarl.
"Trey," Tony warned. He was getting uncomfortable with the way his son was looking at her. A hunter to its prey.
"It's okay, Tony," Emily told him. She looked deep into Trey's mind. He had good defenses but one area was weak. And then she understood. He wanted to deal with it on his own. She suddenly realized that the area in his mind wasn't weak at all; he was actually letting her see this area of his mind.
"Let me handle this," Trey told her in her mind almost begging.
"You're a telepath?!" Emily thought to him in surprise. She nearly blurted it out loud but his eyes stopped her. Trey? A telepath?
"Let me handle this," he repeated, "Please!" he added. She shook her head firmly. "Do you want them hurt?" he demanded.
"We can do this together."
"You want to die together too?"
"It doesn't have to be."
"No, it doesn't. Give me time."
"Are you two okay?" Tony asked them looking at them staring at each other in silence.
Trey stepped away from her.
"I just want everyone to be more careful. And to talk to each other; let each other know when things seem out of sorts," Emily told the group.
"That means you too," she told Trey shooting him a glare.
