Chapter Eight
"Hey, can I help?" Sam asked Emily as she came into the kitchen.
"Sure you can help George set the table," Emily said gesturing to George who was pulling plates out of the kitchen cabinet.
"Sure," Sam said stepping next to George and took a plate from George's hand.
"I got it," George said picking up a pile of plates on the counter and went through the door to the dining room.
"Look, nothing's going on between me and Trey," Sam told him as she put the knives and forks on the table as he set down the plates.
"None of my business," he said with a shrug.
"Oh, okay. I was hoping it would be," she said and went back into the kitchen.
"Wait. What?" he said following her in.
"I thought there was something between us back at the farm. I guess I was wrong. Since I've come here you've barely said two words to me. I was hoping it was just you maybe feeling a little....I don't know uncomfortable about me being Jake's sister. But I guess it's regret. You didn't mean to kiss me at all. Or if you did you just regret it now."
"I'll just..." Emily said and just left the room quickly.
"I thought you were into Trey."
She shrugged. "He's good-looking. He makes a girl look."
"That's it?"
"He's a friend, okay?"
"But what about..." he gestured his head upwards.
"He kissed my cheek in friendship just like he does with Emily," she shrugged.
"What was that about you hoping it was my business?" he asked with a slow smile.
"Do I have to spell it out for you?" she said grabbing the front of his shirt and pulled him down to kiss him on the lips.
"Maybe one more time," he said when she pulled away. She smiled and pulled him back down to her.
Raven looked up at the knock on her door. "Hi," she said and looked away to look out her window.
"I didn't mean to hurt you," he said coming into the room and sat down next to her on the bed.
"I know."
"We're not right for each other. You know that, don't you?" he asked quietly. She nodded. "So, why are you mad at me?"
"I'm not," She said looking at him.
"Maybe you and Tony aren't either. And I'm not saying that you should go out with him," he said putting up his hands in defense. "I'm not saying anything more about that. It's up to you two decide about that. But I want you to be happy. We had a good time, Rave. And...honestly..." he took a deep breath. "You gave me my humanity back."
"What?" she asked blinking in shock.
"You made me feel human again. Thank you," he said kissing her cheek.
"Really?"
"I never thought I could have a relationship with a woman again. I thought it was just going to be an eternity of seductions just for a meal ticket. You showed me that it didn't have to be like that. There's hope."
"Of course there's hope, Trey. You'll find someone."
"I hope so."
"You will. I know it. You are such a good person, Trey, whether you think so or not. Underneath this, bad ass exterior you got going on, is a wonderful man."
"Hardly."
"You are, Trey. Do you think if you were the person you think you are that you'd even be having this conversation with me? That you'd even be living here trying to get to know the father you thought abandoned you? And the people you thought you were willing to kill just for revenge?"
"I wasn't going to kill you. But I'm just as responsible as they are."
"Don't say that."
"I am. I didn't stop them. So many times I missed the chance to stop them. But I didn't care what they were doing, what they were up to. I didn't care about Tony. I didn't care about any of you."
"That wasn't your fault. They were the ones trying to kill us."
"I will always blame myself for this. I could have tried to stop them. If I had cared. I care now. And I plan to stop them any way I can."
"I know that. We all know that. That's why we're letting you be here with us."
"It's not over, Raven, " he said shaking his head.
"I know that."
"I don't want to hurt you. Any of you," he said quietly.
"What do you mean?" she asked turning. "Tony thinks that you know who's trying to hurt us. Do you?"
He nodded.
"So, why...."
"Why don't I try and stop him now?"
She nodded.
"I'm not strong enough. Not now, not by myself."
"But we'd help..."
"None of us are strong enough! Not Emily, not me..."
"What is he? The devil?"
"Close enough."
"You won't tell me?" she asked disappointed.
"Why? So you can tell Tony? It won't do him any good to know."
"Why not? Who is it?"
He touched the palm of his hand to her cheek. "Will you trust me?"
"I'm trying, Trey."
He nodded. "That's all I can ask," he said getting up.
Jake looked up at the knock on his door.
"Come in," he said and the door opened to reveal Tony. "Hey," he said setting down his sketch pad.
"Hey," Tony said coming in looking around as he walked.
"What's up?"
"Can we talk?"
"Yeah, sure," Jake said scooting up in his bed to a better sitting position.
"It's about...Emily."
"What? What happened?" Jake said nearly jumping out of bed.
"She's okay. Relax," Tony said putting a hand on his shoulder and sat on the bed next to him.
"What about Em?"
"I don't know what she's told you..."
"About?"
"Me. Us."
"Not much really," Jake shrugged, "That you used to date. That she always knew she'd end up with me but she did have some feelings back then for you and she had to use that time to sort through them."
He nodded. "With all this going on...I don't know. It puts things in perspective, I guess."
"What do you mean?"
"I love Emily. You know that."
"Sure."
"But I don't love her how you think I love her. The way you get upset about me probably still being in love with her. I'm not."
"Really."
"You can believe me or not. I'm just trying to clear things up. I know it's a problem for you and we've got enough problems going on right now. We don't need that getting in the way."
"I can't help but feel like you and she...still have feelings for each other."
"We do. Look, there's no denying I'm still attracted to her. Maybe vice versa. But that doesn't mean we're in love with each other or that we should be together."
"Do you want her back?"
"Sometimes, yeah, I do. Emily's, well, you know Emily. You can rely on her. She brings you up when you've been kicked down. She always seems to know the right thing to say to cheer you up. She's got that incredibly generous heart of hers..."
"Okay, okay!"
"But... no. Overall, no. I don't love her in the way she needs to be loved. And she doesn't love me."
"So..."
"Look, all I'm saying is you don't need to worry about me trying to take Emily from you or whatever else goes on in that head of yours."
"I don't know what to think sometimes."
"I know it's a weird situation. Me and her. Me, Trey and Isabella."
"You can say that again."
"I need your help, Jake. You're in this just like the rest of this. I'm probably the cause of all of it, I know, but I need to know that you're going stick by her and get her through."
"Of course I will. Not just for Emily but for all of us. Even you."
"I'm glad I'm included in that."
"So, what's going on with you and Raven?"
"Ah, don't even ask."
"What? Don't tell me there's nothing there either."
"I'm not talking to you about your sister."
"So, it is serious."
"She's got issues with Trey to deal with. She doesn't need me to deal with too."
"How do you feel about that? Her and Trey?"
"I just want them both to be happy. If that's what's to be. I'll accept it."
"You're in love with her," Jake said surprised.
"I don't know," Tony said rubbing his face.
"She does care about you, Tony. You can see that plain as day."
"There's caring. Then there's caring."
"Yeah, I know."
"Anyways, better she find a human. Us vamps, we're too complicated," he said getting up and crossed to the door.
"Hey, Ton."
"Yeah?"
"Maybe we could hang out sometime. If Emily and Raven like you, you must have some appealing qualities," Jake said ending in a smile.
Tony smiled lightly. "You must for Emily to go out with you," he opened the door. "I suppose you don't like Italian Opera?" he said turning back.
"You mean that stuff you call music that comes screeching up here at three in the morning? No."
Tony laughed. "Yeah. That. Concert doesn't interest you?"
Jake looked at him like he was mad.
Tony laughed. "I actually got my hands on some Imagine Dragon tickets. You interested?"
"Much better. Yeah, I'm in."
