Prologue
"Go, go, go!" Karai screamed as she kicked open the dojo door. It swung hard and smacked against the wall as Karai rushed Shinigami through the threshold. Karai chased after her, but a very obvious limp kept her from being able to keep up. Shinigami looked back at her, her gold eyes widening with alarm was she saw the hoard of Foot Clan soldiers honing in on them. She stopped and grabbed Karai around the waist before slamming down one of the bagged potions she kept tied to her waist. A purple dust burst free as soon as the bag made contact, quickly filling the space and shrouding the lights in the hallway. This gave Shinigami the brief moment she needed to help gather Karai and get her away from the soldiers.
They ran as fast as their legs could carry them around the corner. Shinigami opened a door, discovering an small, empty room, where she quickly shoved Karai into. She then turned and dug her hand into a satchel at her side, which exited with a fist full of red powder. She muttered quickly into the powder in her native tongue before blowing the powder into the hallway. Suddenly, the illusion of Karai and Shinigami running down the hall appeared and continued to travel through the hall. Shinigami hurriedly shut the door and the duo listened with baited breath as the Foot soldiers barrelled noisily past their hiding spot.
"That will distract them momentarily." Shinigami whispered.
"Define momentarily." Karai muttered, her breath hitching on every syllable. She was gripping her thigh like a vise, her face glimmering with clammy sweat. Shinigami carefully managed to pry Karai hand away to see a deep slash wound across the side of her thigh. Luckily, it was on the wrong side to cut into the femoral nerve, but it likely injured the connective tissue holding the thigh muscles together. Karai needed medical attention immediately. And though she was a very skilled kunoichi, there was no way she would be able to escape with such a wound.
Karai seemed to realize this as Shinigami pressed Karai's hands back down on the wound with hers. "You have to go. The Shredder wants me, not you. You're better off escaping while you can."
"Don't be ridiculous. I'm not leaving you with that psychopath. You know as well as I what he has planned for you." Shinigami voice was firm.
"I do. But I'd rather one of us make it out intact then both of us be mutated- or worse." Karai pointed out. "Whether he's really my father or not, the Shredder still has some ounce of love for me, I could hear it in his voice."
Shinigami rolled her eyes. "Could you hear it when his Tekkō-kagi came down on your leg?"
"BUT-" Karai raised her voice slightly, which caused the pair to momentarily fall silent. They listened intently to make sure no one had discovered their location due to the outburst. "But... he does not hold those emotions for you. If he were to get a hold of you... he would hesitate a lot less to kill you than he would me. It makes more sense for me to stay than for both of us to get caught."
Shinigami's eyes searched Karai's desperately for a different solution, but she found none. "How can you just expect me to leave you?"
"Make it temporarily." Karai stated. "The turtles. They can help."
Shinigami's nose wrinkled as she grimaced. "Really? You want me to stoop that low?"
"We ARE that low." Karai urged. "You don't need all of them. That could get to messy and complicated. Do not let Leonardo come. He would let his emotions get the best of him. Raphael, Donatello, Shelby. That's who you need."
"Bradford's daughter?" Shinigami's eyes shone with recognition at the name. "I would not call her steathy."
"Well, I like the idea of someone who's closest to my situation to help- sue me." Karai muttered.
"Fine, fine. Raphael, Donatello, Shelby." Shinigami counted off. "I will get them here. But I am not leaving the city. I will not venture that far from you."
Karai shoved her phone into Shinigami's hand. "Here. Reach them this way. Leo's number should be on there."
Shinigami held the phone delicately in her hands before her eyes looked up into Karai's with guilt and distress. "I... feel so dirty, leaving you here."
"Hey," Karai placed her hand over Shinigami's, "I know you'll get me out of here. It just isn't going to happen today."
Shinigami took a deep breath. "愛してる."
Karai leaned forward, placing a rushed, frenzied kiss onto Shinigami's lips. They stayed locked together for a few moments before Karai broke away. "I know."
Shinigami, shaking, pocketed the cell phone. "Please, stay hidden for as long as you possibly can. Buy me as much time as you can for getting the reinforcements here."
Karai nodded. "I will."
With that, Shinigami took a deep breath and turned, slowly opening the closet door. She looked around, making sure the coast was clear, before booking it to the the window. She threw it open, causing alarms to ring. Guilt racked her heart once again and she jumped out of the Foot Headquarters and disappeared into the night.
