Chapter 13

“Okay class,” Erwin said out loud, settling down the rowdy students who were more interested in escaping than anything else. “So because of World War two, ninety-two Russians died for every one American soldier.”

Erwin was in his third class for the day and he was glad it was the quieter and older ones of the bunch. If it had been a younger class, they’d still be on the energy of the day but luckily they were until after lunch which meant they would hit an afternoon slump.

“Mr. Smith?”

“Yes, Mr. Arlert?”

“In the end, how many people died in total?”

They always did it that way. Armin referred to his older brother respectfully during class and Erwin did it right back but went right back to using first name basis whereas Armin maintained his perfect student reputation.

“Well, Armin, it was the largest war in history so an estimated eighty-five million people died.”

The astounding amount of deaths caught the attention of the students, allowing Erwin to explain further in detail.

“I’ll be drawing some of the territories on the chalkboard now. We can discuss more about the deaths after,” Erwin said, facing the large empty space that would soon be filled with mind tiring information.

Whispers and giggles filled the room while he was turned away, taking that time to do what they wanted which in Erwin’s case, he had to allow considering he wasn't even teaching but doodling away.

It got to the point where the students began making such noise that he just about missed the steady knocking at his door.

“Students,” Erwin said loudly, not glancing away from his hand. “There’s someone at the door, quiet down.”

Instantly, they began settling down respectfully and if it was another teacher, they would have envied the skill but hey, he had a way with students.

“Come in,” Erwin called out.

The door opened then closed and he waited a bit for the person to announce their presence but it never happened which was strange. He figured it was another student coming in late but most students snuck in without ever knocking so as to not get in trouble.

“How may I help yo-”

He turned to look at the door but spotted no one there which puzzled him a bit. Was it really a student?

“I’m right here Blondie.”

Erwin spun, his eyes landing on the most adorable Levi he ever had the honour of seeing, glaring up at him. Several of his students snickered but he ignored them.

“Holy hell!” Erwin exclaimed, fully surprised. “Levi! You’re here!”

“Well, yeah? I wasn’t sure when would be a good day so I chose today.”

“Don’t worry about it. Today is perfectly fine. I’m glad you came. Will you be staying here all day?”

“Yup,” Levi stated, walking to the chalk board and erasing a line Erwin had drawn with the tip of his finger. “If you don’t mind, that is. It’s my first time leaving my house since I was like thirteen so I’m not sure where I am and how I got here,” he explained. ''I only got here because I had to ask for directions and now I’m exhausted from human interaction.”

Erwin chuckled, laying a hand on Levi’s frosty feeling shoulder.

“That’s fine, you can stay.”

“Excuse me, Sir?” a student asked.

Erwin had mostly forgotten he was in the middle of class and turned to see the class filled with curious eyes. Oh the joy of being a child when you still find the smallest of things exciting.

“Yes, Armin?”

“I just wanted to know who this was since he? I'm sorry I don't know how to refer, will be joining our class.”

“It’s he. The name’s Levi Ackerman. I apologize for interrupting your very interesting class with blondie and I’ll be joining you for today,” Levi introduced half heartedly.

Erwin rolled his eyes at Levi’s introduction but smiled at him anyway. He had forgotten, he had never mentioned having a baby brother in the first place.

“That’s my baby brother,” Erwin said pointing at Armin who stared with bright eyes and a red tinted nose.

“Oh? Didn’t know you had one of those. Adorable.” Armin made a strangled gasp noise that made Erwin smile and Levi roll his eyes. “I take it no one has said that before.”

“Plenty but I didn’t expect you to say that,” Armin whispered, red in the face.

“Ackerman? That’s your last name?” Eren interrupted, ignoring the fawning over his best friend.

“Yes. Why?” Levi asked, narrowing his eyes defensively. He swore he could already sense that he hated this child

“Are you related to my sister?”

“No? I wouldn’t think so. I only have one living family member.”

“Of course you wouldn’t know her,” Eren stated bitterly, his green eyes glinting with an emerging fire. “After she was driven away from her family and left an outcast? I know you’re her biological relative. She only has two and you’re definitely one of them.”

“I wouldn’t know, would I? It’d be an honour to meet someone else with my last name, especially if they’re my family. I’ll meet your sister if that’s what you want but I’ve spent the last twelve years of my life thinking I had only one family member.”

Eren stood from his seat, Levi’s eyes narrowing. Eren could tell, he didn't like Levi.

“Alright, Mr. Jäger, there is no need to get into an argument with Levi,” Erwin interrupted. “I would appreciate it if you refrained from being a bother.”

“Why Sir? Are you trying to hog him for yourself?” Eren asked, reluctantly sitting down.

Erwin let out a sigh, Levi’s face morphing into an amused expression.

“No Eren, I’m just worried he might slam you to the ground if you annoy him too much.”

“What can he do? I’m way taller than him.”

“Oh trust me you brat. I’m pretty sure I can snap you in half. Ask Blondie.”

Eren remained quiet, heatedly glaring at Levi from his seat. This man just had to come and ruin his semi okay day. He felt like fuming for whatever reason and it was obvious but a gentle touch on his shoulder from Armin calmed him down. His best friend just always knew how to get him to behave.

“Class, just to let you know, it doesn’t matter who you are. He body slammed Professor Hanji and myself to the ground the second he met us. He’s small but surprisingly strong.”

The class stared at Levi in shock, making him roll his eyes at them. Dirty little brats.

He took a seat in Erwin’s chair and observed the class. Average in size, quiet in a noisy way, nosey as hell, and just overall reeked of children grime. He couldn’t imagine what kind of filth they brought to school with them each day but before he could try and figure that out, his mind suddenly processed what Erwin had said.

“Wait, what? Hanji teaches in this school?”

“Yeah.”

“Well god damn it. Don’t tell them I’m here because I will choke them if they so much as touch me.”

Erwin let out a laugh and turned back to the chalkboard. That would be interesting.
