6| The Assignment

"Alright class, even though we have a wall torn out and caution tape all across it, that doesn't mean you can start slacking." Mr. Frank told everyone. He began handing out the assignment. "I'm assigning you all into pairs for an English project. You have to make an essay on your favourite part about Ninjago City. I know that it's a wide spectrum but figure it out. All the information is on the sheet I'm giving you."

Reagan sighed and mulled over what her favourite part about Ninjago City was. Her teacher was correct, it was a very wide spectrum.

"Okay, now I will call out the names of the people in each group! Group one is Brock and Tania." He began. Reagan sent Tania a look of jealousy. Tania stifled a giggle. "Group two is Josh and Eve. Group three is Jay and Quinn." The awkward big shrunk down as Quinn, a broody girl with lots of muscle and broad shoulders, and of course wore a theme of punk rock, made a gist and punched it into her hand.

Mr. Frank scanned his page. "Group four is Morgan and Gladly....and Group five is Reagan and Lloyd. Now Group six is....wait where is group six?"

Reagan wasn't paying attention to the teacher who was scrambling to find the sheet. She was in an English project with Lloyd. And things were already awkward enough.

"Hey, do you want to ask Mr. Frank if you can be a group of three with us?" Brock asked, sending Lloyd a look, like it was all his fault. Lloyd slid his gaze to Reagan, awaiting her answer.

"Uh...." She was interrupted by yelling on the other side of the room. Quinn had out Jay in a headlock and was pounding his skull.

"Ow! I was just complementing your scary skull ring!" He yelped. In two seconds flat Lloyd was over there. He easily pulled the large girl off. She glared at him, her mohawk bent on one side.

"What was that for?" She screamed.

Lloyd raised his hands in surrender. "Do you want another detention? Didn't the principal say that if you get another detention after your fifteenth one you'd be suspended?"

She searched for a word. "I-what-um," she stuttered. Quinn grabbed him by the front of his hoodie. "HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT?"

He rolled his eyes calmly. "Am I the only one who pays attention around here?" They were brave words for a guy who was hanging by his neck three feet off the ground by a bulky girl three times his size.

Quinn dropped him to the ground with a thump and he lay in a crumpled heap as she stomped away muttering under her breath.

"I guess I'll just do the project myself....that fine." Jay called after her.

Lloyd stood, and brushed himself off. "She'll cool off sooner or later." He told him. The bell rang and the class let out a breath no one realized they were holding. No attacks.

Reagan gathered her things and headed out the door. As she rooted through her locker her friends joined her.

"I feel so bad for you." Tania said. "I wonder if he brags all about being the 'hero of Ninjago'."

Before she could respond a booming laugh wafted their way. Brock leaned against her locker, almost slamming the door on her fingers, as it shut with a clang.

"Garmadon? A hero? He has us all brainwashed under this green ninja thing but we all can see right through him. He's just a loser wannabe who secretly is trying to take over the world but can't do it because he's to dumb." Brock said to the lathe posse behind him. Everyone nodded and laughed. Echoing his words like parrots.

"I'll talk to the teacher about you joining our group." Brock said to her.

Reagan kept her eyes on the silver key chain on her bag. "Thanks." She mumbled.

"No problem." Brock gathered the group with one gesture and they left.

"I better get going." Tania sighed. "This essay isn't going to write itself."

Josh hurried after her. "Hey after your done I was wondering....." Reagan finished putting her things away and closed her locker. She searched the crowd for the green hoodie and the mop of blonde hair. He was no where to be seen. Frowning, Reagan left the building and made her way down into the courtyard.

After he was no where to be seen, Reagan sighed and fished her key out of her pocket and was about to make her way back the apartment when Lloyd appeared.

"Miss me?" He asked with a smirk. Reagan narrowed her eyes at him.

  "How'd you do that?"

Lloyd flipped a pencil on his hand. "I'm a ninja, remember? Oh wait...no I'm not...I'm just a loser wannabe who secretly is trying to take over the world but can't do it because I'm to dumb." He pitched his voice a tone deeper making a surprisingly good in pressing of Brock. But the words were bitter.

Reagan rolled her eyes. "Aren't you though?" The words burst out of her mouth before she could stop them.

She saw a flash a hurt go through his emerald gaze before they lot with fury. "I didn't ask to be the green ninja you know." Lloyd said angrily.

"You could've said no, what made you decide that you wanted too? Wanted to learn self-defence?"

"No," his face was serious. "I wanted to make a difference and rebel against my father and all the assumptions. I wanted to fight against him and make my move while others just sat back and judged me for who my dad is. Too bad it didn't prove anything to some people. I guess Brock was right, people don't change." Then he turned and walked away.
