Chapter 48
Serenity bit back a small sigh and moved a hand through her hair and across her face. She shook her head and pursed her lips in annoyance and pain before she looked at me. "So do you think you are going to be back in the hospital soon?" she asked and raised an eyebrow in question while she studied me with a small frown on her face.
"No," my sister and I said in unison. We glanced at each other and rolled our eyes before we looked at Serenity, who looked amused.
"I am not planning on going back to the hospital soon, Seren," I said. "I know that Mom is going to be very protective of me, which is neither a good or bad thing."
Serenity hesitated before she slowly nodded and pressed her lips into a thin line. "If you do, then will I be able to visit you?" she asked and cocked her head to the side while she studied me with a small frown on her face.
I shook my head no, and my smile grew sadder with my heart breaking into a million pieces. "Unfortunately not," I said, and my heart broke even more when I saw the pain and sadness flash through her eyes and across her face. "They're still going to make sure that only my family can visit."
"And then the creepy guy that likes to appear at random times of the day to check in on you and the community," Melody said and flashed me a small smirk and a wink, and I rolled my eyes and scowled. "You are so never going to let that down, T."
I rolled my eyes some more, and my scowl grew deeper, even though a small smile appeared on my lips when she used my words to describe Aenes against me. "Very funny, Mel," I grumbled while I folded my arms across my chest, and she snickered. "Are you going to tell him that I said that?" I asked and raised an eyebrow in question.
"Probably," she said and nodded. "Aenes isn't going to be mad about it at all. Mom is going to just bust out laughing or hide her laugh because you said that in front of Serenity." She gestured toward my mate, and I looked at her before I looked at my sister again.
My mate frowned and furrowed her brows. She looked between the two of us and then looked at me. "And you are sure that it is safe for me to be near him?" she asked and cocked her head while she studied me, and I nodded in confirmation.
"Yes," I said. "He is safe for you to be around, Serenity. He will not hurt you, but he will not answer any of your questions that we may be hiding from you."
Serenity scowled and narrowed her eyes, and a look of annoyance and pain flashed through her eyes. "And why not?" she asked and raised an eyebrow in question. She looked between the two of us before she looked at me. "I want to know. Why can't I know?"
"Again, because it isn't safe," Melody said before I could say a word. She shook her head and scowled, pressing her lips into a thin line. "I wish it would be safe for you to know, but it isn't. Hell, there is a lot of stuff that is being hidden from us too that we want to know but can't because it could lead to our deaths."
Serenity scoffed a laugh and rolled her eyes while she pursed her lips in annoyance. "That is a bit too extreme; don't you think?" she asked and raised an eyebrow in question while she studied us. She folded her arms across her chest and stared at us with a hard look in her eyes as if she thought we were messing with her.
My sister and I looked at each other, and our faces turned grave while we looked at my mate, and my mate's face grew pale and concern flashed through her eyes while she studied us.
"Right?" she asked again, her voice barely above a whisper. "It's a bit extreme that whatever you say could lead to our deaths. I mean, how would it lead to our deaths? Why?"
I bit back a small smile and shook my head because I had no idea how to answer her question. "Unfortunately, I do not know," I said before I cleared my throat and shifted in my seat. "I just know that whatever we say or do can lead to our deaths, and that is something that we are very afraid of."
"But why?" Serenity asked. "Why are you afraid of that leading to your deaths? What do you think will happen if you die?"
"Uh, the world ending," Melody said, and I couldn't help but roll my eyes and scowl, pressing my lips into a thin line. She looked at me and grinned. "What?" she asked and cocked her head to the side while she studied me. "The world could end if you died."
"That is a very morbid thought, Mel," I said, and she shrugged and grinned. I gave her a pointed look and raised both eyebrows in unison, and her grin grew wider. "I don't think that the world could end if I die."
"You never know," she said and shook her head before she cleared her throat and shifted on the desk before she grew serious. "Now, was there anything else that we needed to discuss, or is it ok if I help my brother take a shower and get to bed?" she asked and raised an eyebrow in question while she looked at my mate. "He needs sleep."
I rolled my eyes and scowled, pressing my lips into a thinner line. "Very funny, Mel," I grumbled, pursing my lips in annoyance. "I can take a shower by myself and do not need your help. You have done more than enough to help me out the past couple of days. I'm going to do this on my own and get some sleep."
She instantly looked at me with wide eyes, and a look of nervousness and worry flashed through her eyes. "Bu-"
"No, Mel," I said and shook my head, interrupting her, and she scowled and narrowed her eyes. "I do not need your help. Yes, I am exhausted and sore, but I am not that sore and exhausted. I want to take a shower by myself."
Mel sighed and moved a hand through her hair and across her face, pursing her lips in annoyance. "Why do you not want me to help? I don't mind helping you."
"I know that you do not mind helping me, but I am eighteen-years-old and a male, and I can take a shower by myself," I said, and she rolled her eyes and scowled, pressing her lips into a thin line. "If I need help, then I will contact someone to help me. It'll probably be Dad and won't be you."
I tucked my head closer to my chest and silently prayed that she would drop it, and my sister rolled her eyes and bit back a tired sigh while she relented.
"Fine," she said and grumbled with a small pout on her face. She folded her arms across her chest and tucked her head closer to her chest. "I won't help you take a shower, but I am going to stay in the room while you shower."
I rolled my eyes but silently relented before I looked at Serenity, who was watching us with furrowed brows and lips pressed into a thin line. "Do you want to stay, or do you want to leave?" I asked and raised an eyebrow in question while I studied her. "After this, I am going to take a nap so that I can go to school later."
"Well, you have the weekend to rest," Mel said before she looked at Serenity. "And I am sure that you can come and visit, even though I do not know if your parents will allow it or not."
"Mom will," Serenity said with a small whisper in her voice. She cleared her throat and shifted in her seat, and she looked down with her cheeks turning red. "I don't think my dad will allow me to."
I bit back a small chuckle and shook my head. "No," I said while I pursed my lips in annoyance. "I don't think he will allow you to either because for some reason, he not only hates my mother's guts but mine as well, even though I had been nothing but kind to him."
And if he tries to stop my mate from seeing me, then all hell would break loose...
Oh Goddess keep us safe.
