Chapter 31
I was able to drop Serenity off without a hitch and breathed a sigh of relief when I saw that she made it back safely into her house. "Thank Goddess," I said, earning a few snickers from my siblings.
I furrowed my brows and cocked my head while I looked at them. "What?" I asked, amused and a little hurt that they were laughing at me. "What'd I do?"
"Nothing," Mel said, still snickering while she shook her head. "I am just amazed how smitten you are with your mate, even though she doesn't know that she is your mate."
I rolled my eyes and scowled while I made the long drive back to our house so that I could drop them off and then pick up the rest of my siblings. "Very funny, Mel," I said, my cheeks turning slightly red. "Remind me to act the same way when you find your mate." I flashed her a small smirk and a wink, and her cheeks instantly grew red.
"Oh, please, don't, TJ," she said while she shook her head and cleared her throat, her cheeks turning a darker shade of red. "Please, don't act like that. I was only joking with you. I did not mean anything about it. I promise."
I narrowed my eyes teasingly and bit back a small smile. "Uh huh," I said. "And why is it that I do not believe that you are joking?" I raised an eyebrow in question while I stared at her before I turned my attention back to the road.
My sister's heart skipped a beat before it pounded harder in her chest. "I don't know," she said before she cleared her throat and shook her head. "I wish I did, but I do not know what you're talking about, TJ."
"Liar, liar, pants on fire," my youngest sister, Kerri, said, and I bit back a small snort and rolled my eyes. "Why don't you go ahead and tell the truth, Melody? You are making fun of TJ because he is smitten with his mate."
She started to make kissy faces at me, and my cheeks turned red while I shifted in my seat.
"Hush, Kerri May," I said and looked at her, and she looked at me and grinned, turning her gaze back to me. I narrowed my eyes teasingly, smiling. "Or else, I will do the same thing to you."
Kerri shrugged and looked nonchalant while her cheeks grew red. "That's fine," she said before she cleared her throat and shifted in her seat. "I wasn't going to have a boyfriend yet anyway, so you can do that to your heart's desires."
I bit back a small snort and shook my head, but I didn't say another word while I drove the rest of the way home.
"So, are you going to ask Dad if Serenity can do paperwork?" Kerri asked, changing the subject. "Or was that something you told her so that she would leave the car and not ask any more questions?"
I bit back a small sigh and shook my head again, my heart yearning for her to be in the passenger seat again. "Both?" I asked before I cleared my throat and tapped my finger on the steering wheel. "It was both."
They stayed silent and looked at each other before they looked at me, slowly blinking.
Again, I cleared my throat and tapped my finger on the steering wheel some more. "It's a bit of both, but it is mainly so that I can spend more time with her and get her to trust me and the matebond."
She slowly nodded and furrowed her brows. "Are you worried about her knowing about wolves and finding out about us?" Kerri asked, and I shook my head no.
"She already knows about wolves being on the land we live on," I replied. "Mom and Dad said that it was fine, so she knows about them and has seen some."
"What about her finding information that she shouldn't know about?" Melody asked while she raised an eyebrow in question. "I mean, I think it'd be suspicious if she figures out that there are things blacked out such as the word "pack.""
"Almost all of the information doesn't even include the word "pack" in it, Mel," I said while I shrugged and grimaced, "so I think we will be fine in that department."
"But there are titles like "Alpha Price," "Alpha Vander," "King Cason," and things along that line," Mel said sassily. "Don't you think she would be curious about that, especially since Cason isn't the "King," and that this is America and there are no kings?" She gave me a pointed look while she smiled.
I bit back a small sigh before I slowly nodded while I pursed my lips in annoyance. "She will be," I said before I cleared my throat and tapped my finger against my steering wheel. "That is why I am making sure that those are covered or just have the first and last name seen and not their title."
"But what if she finds something that you don't want her to find?" Mel asked while she raised an eyebrow in question, and I shrugged and grimaced. "Do you think she will question you about it?"
"I hope not," I said before I shook my head and cleared my throat. "I don't want to lie to her, but for her safety, I am going to have to lie to her."
"True," she said and slowly nodded. She furrowed her brows and pursed her lips into a thin line. "Do you think that Dad will allow her to help?"
"He will," I said and nodded in confirmation. "He will make sure that our bond stays strong, especially since he and Mom had a "rough" mateship."
"Do you think that it's true that Aunt Kerri had placed a spell on Mom and Dad to keep them apart?" Kerri asked while she raised an eyebrow in question, changing the subject. "Or do you think that is just some fucked up story so that Dad could "cheat" on Mom?"
Both Mel and I looked at each before I looked at the road while Mel looked at Kerri, who had been named after her.
"Yes," Mel confirmed while she nodded. She cleared her throat and shifted in her seat. "It is true that Aunt Kerri had placed a spell on Mom and Dad to keep them apart. You can ask Aenes if you have questions about that or Mom and Dad because they will answer your questions, too. They won't lie to you if that is what you are worried about."
"But I don't want to ask them," Kerri said with a small groan in her voice while she leaned her head against the backrest. She closed her eyes and scowled, folding her arms across her chest. "That is why I am asking the two of you."
I bit back an annoyed sigh and shook my head. "Why are you asking us?" I asked while I raised an eyebrow in question, looking at her through the rearview mirror and then at the road. "Are you scared of what Mom and Dad will tell you?"
Kerri hesitated before she shrugged and grimaced. "Not really," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. She cleared her throat and shifted in her seat, not able to look at us. "I am not worried about what they will tell me."
"Then why don't you ask them?" I asked while I raised an eyebrow in question while I looked at her through the rearview mirror before I looked at the road again. "You don't have to be nervous of them or their explanations."
"Because I am sure that you have already asked them," Kerri said while she shrugged and grimaced. "Haven't you?" She raised an eyebrow in question while she cocked her head and studied me.
"Yes," I confirmed and nodded. "Mel asked them as well."
"Did they tell you the same thing?"
"They did," Mel said and nodded while she shrugged, and my other sister looked at her. "We asked them separately and then compared notes."
"Then why don't you tell me what happened?"
"Because we want you to hear it straight from the horse's mouth first," I replied. "After they tell you everything, then we can tell you what we've figured out over the years."
"And instead of being from the horse's mouth, it'll be from the wolf's mouth, but that doesn't mean anything," Mel supplied, and I rolled my eyes and scowled. She looked at me and winked, smiling innocently. "I mean, it will be."
"Very funny, Mel," I said coldly, and she grinned, "but that is why we don't want to tell you what happened."
Kerri hesitated before she slowly nodded and shifted in her seat. "Can either you or Mel be in there with me while I ask?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Mel and I looked at each other before we looked at her and then I looked at the road. "We both can be in there if you want," Mel said softly, offering our sister a small smile. "Nothing bad will happen to you. I promise."
Kerri breathed a small sigh of relief, and she slowly started to relax, nodding. "Ok," she said before she cleared her throat and shifted in her seat. "Thank you both. I do appreciate it."
I bit back a small smile and nodded. "Of course," I said before I cleared my throat and tapped on the steering wheel. "Anything for you, Ker. Anything for you."
