🍁 Chapter 5 🍁
Aemond was sitting quietly in the chambers that he shared with his brother Aegon. He was looking here and there. The maid Genna entered the chambers to serve food to the prince. She saw the confused prince looking at her helplessly. She noticed that he was holding something in his hands.
She kept the food on the table and said, "My Prince, what happened? What are you hiding?"
Aemond whispered, "You must not tell my mother."
Genna nodded her head and went to close the door. The prince gave her something wrapped in a piece of red cloth. The maid removed the cloth and saw a rag doll which was torn. "Whose doll is it?" Genna asked.
"It belongs to Naerys," the prince replied. "She bites her dolls and pulls the threads. It was already torn. I worsened it by mistake. I was scared and so, I took the doll with me. She is crying now. I didn't even tell her nursemaid about it." he added. The prince spoke again, "Can you stitch it, Genna? I will give it back to her and she will be happy."
"Sure, My Prince. I will stitch it. It won't take much time. Why don't you have your food while I do that?" Genna replied.
The prince smiled widely and sat down to eat. Genna fetched a needle and some thread and started stitching the doll. The prince finished eating his food and wiped his mouth. He ran to Genna and said, "Is it done?"
Genna said to him, "Almost! It will be done soon, My Prince." She put a few more stitches on the doll and sighed. She looked at the little prince and caressed his head. Then, she put the final stitch and cut the thread with her teeth. Handing the doll to Aemond, she said, "My Prince, you can give the doll to your niece now."
"Thank you very much, Genna. I love you," Aemond said with a smile.
The prince ran out of the chambers but collided with a pillar and fell down. "Carefully, My Prince. Are you hurt?" a knight asked.
"I am fine," Aemond replied. He stood up and started running again. He went to Rhaenyra's chambers but found no one. So he decided to go to Laenor's chambers.
The doors were closed. Aemond stared at the knights who were guarding the chambers. He said to the knight, "Let me in. I need to see Ser Laenor." The guards did not answer. They only stared at him and then, stared at each other. Aemond grew frustrated and started banging the door.
A handsome man opened the door. He was not Laenor. Aemond stared at him. The man had skin as smooth as marble and his hair was dark and messy. Aemond did not fail to recognise him. He was Ser Qarl Correy, a household knight in service to House Velaryon in the High Tide and a close companion to Ser Laenor. Aemond said to him, "Is Ser Laenor here? I need to talk to him."
Qarl said, "He is here, My Prince. But I am afraid that he cannot talk to you now. He got drunk and is now asleep." The disappointed prince walked away.
Qarl sighed and closed the door. He saw Laenor lying on the bed. His naked body was covered by sheets. With a slurry voice, Laenor said, "Whhho ... wasss ... there ... ?"
Qarl bent over and kissed Laenor's cheek. "It was Prince Aemond. I convinced him to go away," saying this, he placed another kiss on Laenor's neck.
Aemond was walking through the corridor with an angry face. "Where in the seven hells is she?" he mumbled. He spotted Glenys at a distance and felt relieved. "Wait!" he said, running to her and grabbing her hand. "Listen to me!"
Glenys looked at the prince and said, "My Prince, you are panting. What is the matter?"
Aemond handed the rag doll to her and said, "Give it to Naerys. I got it stitched."
Glenys smiled at him and curtsied. When she had left, Aemond decided to go to his mother's chambers to see his brother Daeron.
Pentos :
Lady Laena was sitting on a couch and eating spiced prawns. Her husband, The Rogue Prince, was giggling. He said to her, "You have been eating a lot of spicy food these days. It is draining my purse."
Laena said, "I could have satisfied myself with regular food but your child says otherwise." She munched another prawn from the plate.
"Rhaenyra is with child again," she said. She noticed that the news had annoyed her husband.
Daemon said to her, "Did you congratulate her?"
Laena nodded her head and continued eating. Some time passed with no exchange of words between them. Laena kept eating and Daemon kept walking around the chambers. Laena finished the food and washed her hands and mouth. Wiping her hands with a piece of cloth, she said, "I miss my mother and my father, Daemon. And I miss Driftmark too. Let's go back."
Daemon cupped her face and kissed her forehead. He said, "Already tired of travelling? You once said that you wanted to see the whole world and travel with me to the edge of the world on dragon back. What about that?"
"I am not tired. With you by my side, I will never be," Laena said. "But I am homesick. Let's go home," she added.
Daemon noticed that his wife's eyes were getting moist. She was staring at him and waiting for a response. He remembered the day when he had decided to go far away from King's Landing. He wanted to be away from King Viserys, his dear brother. There is no doubt that he loved his brother and would never betray him. And yet, his brother had once denied him what he desired the most. But those were different times.
Daemon caressed his wife's cheek. Placing a hand on her belly, he said, "As you wish, my dear wife. But this is not the right time. Let us wait till you give birth."
Lyonel Strong's chambers:
Lord Lyonel Strong was sitting and working in his chambers. He was tired of looking into all the accounts. He looked outside through the window when a knight entered and said, "My Lord Hand, Lord Larys has arrived." Lyonel nodded his head. He saw Larys entering with a smile on his face.
Larys said, "You look tired, Father. It seems that you do not enjoy the Tower of the Hand. Do you miss Harrenhall?"
Lyonel laughed and said, "You are right. I miss Harrenhall and I am tired. The small folk say, 'King shits and Hand wipes.' I have to look into each and everything and make sure that everything is brought into His Grace's notice. Now tell me Larys, what brings you here?"
"I just came for some wine," Larys answered.
Lyonel smiled and poured two cups of wine. He handed one to his son and drank from the other.
Larys cleared his throat and said, "You don't bring everything into the king's notice, do you?"
Lyonel looked at his son's face. He knew exactly what he was implying. He closed his eyes and said, "I can only inform those things to the king which I notice myself. Other things remain unnoticed and unattended, unless someone else points them out."
That day flashed in Lyonel's mind, when he got to know that Prince Daemon had taken Princess Rhaenyra's maidenhead. He remembered himself advising the king to take Prince Daemon's head as a punishment for treason. Now, his own son was doing the same. In fact, Harwin was guilty of a much higher treason. "I am a helpless father and a dishonest Hand. Perhaps, it was a mistake to leave the Citadel after earning six links of a Maester's chain. Are the Gods punishing me for that?" he said to himself.
