Chapter III

Ronwyn followed as close behind the priest as she dared. She saw him linger for a moment in a crowd of men. He whispered something as he passed that made one man turn to another. The two yelled at each other, then one threw a punch. Before Ronwyn had reached the group, they were all a part of a raucous brawl. The young dwarf was impressed by the beggar priest's skill, inciting a brawl with a simple whisper. She bowed her head and barreled through the fighting humans, tossing them from her path and coming out on the other side just in time to see the priest's silver hem as he turned another corner.

She skidded along the cobblestones, following the trail of the elf as he knocked over a bottle of oil from a market stand. Ronwyn let her short legs propel her through the air just far enough to avoid the slick spill. As she caught her balance, the elf turned suddenly and vanished down another alley. Ronwyn was faster than she looked though and she came into the alley with her string of beads wrapped around her fingers. She pointed at the escaping elf and allowed the magic of Moradin to flow through her.

"Don't move!" She shouted and the elf stopped mid stride. She moved closer to her frozen quarry and squinted at him. Sweat dripping from his brow had run streaks through his makeup, revealing a face that walked a line between elf and man.

"Who are you?" She asked.

"What have you done to me?"

"It's a simple command spell, don't worry about that. You should be worried about what will happen to you if you do not answer my questions. Who are you? You are surely no priest, most definitely not a follower of Moradin."

"Please, if you release me I will —"

"Where is Father Rorrick?"

"Father Rorrick?" The priest sounded truly confused by the name.

"My mentor! He went to get our gold back from you and disappeared!"

"Your gold?" The priest seemed to be stuck in his strange parroting confusion, but then he seemed to understand. "You must be the young prin—"

Ronwyn reached for her warhammer and glared at her captive. "If you value your life you will not finish that sentence."

"I told Rorrick that it would be dangerous work, that he shouldn't follow me. He must have been taken by the enemies of your clan."

"And the gold you took? You promised to find me safe passage to the hills of the east!"

"Unfortunately, I lost your gold. Why do you think I was out there today? I've been doing everything in my power to earn the gold back."

Ronwyn narrowed her eyes again, unsure if she could believe this trickster. "Last time I saw you, when you took my alms box to be used in your tricks, you were human..."

"It was that elf priest!" Came the voice of one of the brawlers they'd left in the street. "Get him!"

"I will explain everything, I swear, but first we need to get out of here! Release me from your spell so we can get to safety!"

Ronwyn hesitated for a moment before snapping her fingers and the elf-man fell forward onto the ground.
